I hope you'll believe me when I say I'm trying to be neutral here, since, well... I made my allegiances pretty clear so far.
But how does popularity because of extra content invalidate the said popularity?
It doesn't invalidate the popularity, just some of the reasoning behind it. Personally, romance takes a second seat for me. Don't get me wrong, I like the romance in Bioware games, but it isn't as important to me as other aspects. In other words, I like it, but could certainly live without it. Romance in these games are extremely popular, even I won't deny that.
For instance, Mass Effect isn't my friend's usual style of game, but she loved the romance part. A lot. She really loved the romance with Liara and she loved Kaidan--until she got to the romance scene. You get an extra clip with Liara, (one I had completely forgot about until she mentioned it) and you get a more "romantic" dialog with her. There is more interaction with Liara in ME2 than with Kaidan, even extra romance dialog. (keep in mind, I am using Kaidan because that was her example) In ME3, there is more interaction with Liara, and once again, a more extensive love scene. She said Liara was her favorite play through--not because Liara meant more to her, but simply because she felt she got more romantic content and more interaction.
It simply made me wonder how many others kept going back to romance Liara because they felt they had more content than the other LI. If all the romance options were the same, same scenes, same amount of dialog and interaction, would people still choose Liara? If you're going to have ten playthroughs, why not choose the romance option that has more meat, rather than one that feels less appetizing. I hope I am explaining this well enough. I am pretty tired and had a lot of sun today lol, maybe I am not coming across well, but I hope you get what I mean.
