You didn't read the post I replied to, did you? The data taken from infographics isn't received by voting, it's taken directly from player's save data if they have the option enabled.

A character can be as popular as they want, the infographic isn't going to reflect it very accurately.

I just went back and read it again. Twice, in fact. You may have implied that, but never outright stated it.

You are also basing your statement on the assumption that's the case for every poll ever published. If you manage to prove that's the case, I may shut my traps. Not likely, but I'll allow for the possibility.

But personally, I doubt that's the case.

You need a charcter who can mention all the missions and experinces the player went through (Virmire, Feros etc). Given Liara is the only one guaranteed to be alive by ME3 it makes sense for her to be the main bridge between games - the sheer number of characters introduced in ME2 causes all sorts of writing problems. Liara being guaranteed to survive that also means a lot more exposition can be placed on her (as well as providing a guaranteed familiar face).

If it wasn't her, it would have to be someone else, and this thread would be titled 'why do people hate Tali' or similar.

Actually, no you don't. The only time I see old missions gets mentioned in ME3 is Virmire, Noveria, and the Suicide Mission, and Noveria is mentioned only in context to Benezia. So Liara can talk about that one, but there's no need to make her talk about the other two.

Further, you're still not answering why it must be "one" character. Wrex and Kirrahe talk about Virmire (or Wreav and Tolan if they are not there), your other squaddies mention the suicide mission. Why must all of the lines be given to the blue waifu? Not to mention Vega was specifically created to be that bridge, so that players new to the series can have Shepard explain it all to him. No waifu required.

But Rip Steakface managed to somehow be even more boring than Jacob, so even if I didn't romance Liara, I'd be grateful to have any chance to talk to him less.

Vega...more boring than Jacob?

The most interesting thing about Jacob is that Shepard can make his father commit suicide, or leave him there to die.

This particular scene... With Vigil playing in the background... I think it's one of the most beautiful, touching moments during Priority: Earth. And no, my Shepard is a flaming poof---does not romance Liara (despite what her father thinks). Liara may not have Tali's endearing quirk nor Jack's badass-ness, but I always see her as Shepard's friend who deeply cares about him/her.

At least Jacob does something slightly interesting in joining Cerberus to begin with. Bold Bigflank is just a huge null.

I really do love this part of the game. It sometimes gets picked apart on BSN for whatever, but I couldn't care less. I think it's a really great image.

There's nothing interesting about that. He's just part of Cerberus in the very beginning. I can't help but get the feeling that some of this is based on something superficial.

I love Liara... she's awesome. It's Ashley I dislike... I let her live just so I can snub her in ME3...

No worse than having long chats with everyone else during the attack on Earth.

Last I checked, talking with someone wasn't considered a quickie. If it was, the world would be very slutty.

Wouldn't that mean that those times Liara delved into Shepard's mind in the SR1's comm room were also quickies?

Liara: "I...I don't know what to say? The images..."

Shepard: "Was it as good for you as it was for me?"

Kaidan: "Should I leave?"

If that's your complaint about sex, you're doing it wrong. B)

That's what Liara mentioned about the mind-melding in ME1.

And Kaidan would not leave.

To answer the question that was originally being asked, I don't hate Liara, but she gets on my nerves about every five seconds. The way she turns from  super passive, socially-awkward, horny girl to super horny, mean-spirited stuck-up ****** in the other two games is quite exasperating.

I had an interesting conversation with a friend today. She was gifted the entire trilogy not long ago and her first play through she romanced Liara. (She adored her, of course). She just finished her second play through with romancing Kaidan. She was incredulous that the love scenes and interactions with Kaidan were so minute compared with Liara. She particularly mentioned the love scenes in ME1, where you get the booty dance with Liara and then an exchange of, "Oh, this was incredible!" "No, you were incredible!" And with Kaidan, it's basically---"Joker wants you on the bridge."

She finally said she was just going to stick with Liara because it seemed you got a little more content with her. That made me wonder. Earlier in the thread someone stated that according to some poll, Liara was the most chosen LI. (paraphrased, of course)

Now, I am not speaking for anyone here or otherwise. I just wondered how many people chose her because she the best character, or just because they feel like they get more bang for their buck, so to speak. It kind of lends credence to the thought that statistics on character choice can't really be trusted or used in an argument to prove a point- simply because there are too many variables to account for.

It was mainly in jest.

In any case, I didn't think of the final mind meld as anything but a friendly exchange, at least outside of the romance version.

I hope you'll believe me when I say I'm trying to be neutral here, since, well... I made my allegiances pretty clear so far.

But how does popularity because of extra content invalidate the said popularity?

Well, it does kind of go to the claims that the writers clearly favor a certain character, though I honestly cannot remember how much of a difference there is between Liara and Ashley's content in ME1. ME2 does start the heavy leaning toward Liara's content. Like, Liara will get a hug as a friend and a kiss if romanced, but a romanced Kaidan or Ashley is not quite so pleasant. You do get a nice note from the VS, but you never get to see him/her again for the entirety of the game. Kinda funny that they couldn't even manage some sort of brief rendezvous on the Citadel or something.

It doesn't invalidate the popularity, just some of the reasoning behind it. Personally, romance takes a second seat for me. Don't get me wrong, I like the romance in Bioware games, but it isn't as important to me as other aspects. In other words, I like it, but could certainly live without it. Romance in these games are extremely popular, even I won't deny that.

For instance, Mass Effect isn't my friend's usual style of game, but she loved the romance part. A lot. She really loved the romance with Liara and she loved Kaidan--until she got to the romance scene. You get an extra clip with Liara, (one I had completely forgot about until she mentioned it) and you get a more "romantic" dialog with her. There is more interaction with Liara in ME2 than with Kaidan, even extra romance dialog. (keep in mind, I am using Kaidan because that was her example) In ME3, there is more interaction with Liara, and once again, a more extensive love scene. She said Liara was her favorite play through--not because Liara meant more to her, but simply because she felt she got more romantic content and more interaction.

It simply made me wonder how many others kept going back to romance Liara because they felt they had more content than the other LI. If all the romance options were the same, same scenes, same amount of dialog and interaction, would people still choose Liara? If you're going to have ten playthroughs, why not choose the romance option that has more meat, rather than one that feels less appetizing. I hope I am explaining this well enough. I am pretty tired and had a lot of sun today lol, maybe I am not coming across well, but I hope you get what I mean.
