I dislike Liara, always have. My attitude towards her comes down to a few things;

For starters I took an instant disliking to her in ME1, there was something about her personality that I just did not like at all, talking to her made me feel uncomfortable, I did not like the fact that she became so obsessed with Shepard after just meeting him.

Despite the fact that I did not like her in ME1 I did not care for her sudden personality shift in ME2, it was a complete 180 from what she was in ME1 ( which should have made me happy but it dod not ), her new personality did not suit her at all. It reminded me of marketing execs who feel they need to make everything edgy to appeal to the young crowd. What I felt was that Bioware were trying to hard to say look how awesome this character is, look she can be dark, edgy and sophisticated too.

In ME3 they did a better job of balancing her personality but Bioware also shoved her down my god damn throat so hard. Make no mistake, Liara is the writers pet of the ME franchise.

Not to point out the obvious, and rage aside--(which, tbh, I didn't notice any rage in his post, more like indignation), but this is a thread asking why people hate Liara. You obviously don't hate her and yet you appear on almost every page arguing with people who dislike her about how they're wrong. In one post you used the term "spiteful fans", which you had to know was incendiary. I mean, I get it. You love her and it is a forum and you want to discuss this because you cannot understand how someone could dislike Liara---but this is a thread asking why people hate her. You shouldn't be surprised that people who hate her would post here and explain why they hate her.

Liara is a fictional character and it's okay for people not to like her. Whether they dislike her because she is spoonfed to them, or because they don't like her character traits, or even because she has a weird tentacle thing happening on her head----who cares? Really, it isn't like Liara is going to read this and cry herself to sleep tonight because some fans think she is a creepy kind of gal.

I consider wanting to smash in somebody's face and strangling them more than just indignation.

You're right, it would have been in my best interest to ignore threads like this. I try and often times, I even succeed. But when things go over a certain level, I can't help myself anymore and just jump into the fray, even though I know I'll probably regret it later and that nothing good ever comes out of it. Maybe it will come to me with time, but I am only human, so yeah... these things happen.

You are also right that this is a thread for people who don't like Liara. And I'm not objecting anybody the right to this. You'll notice I left most people who expressed their negative opinion about Liara alone. But there are certain people I just can't do that with. Once again, I know logically it's not the best course of action, but just can't help myself. I also try to keep it civil, even though that is quite hard sometimes.

Plus, I'm on vacation and have all the time in the world. It's kinda fun to spend it like this. When I get bored with it, I just move on.

Yeah, I get that. I find it odd when someone wants to kill, slap, maim etc. characters they don't like. I find it weird when people claim they want to blow up the Chantry in Dragon Age and of the sort. It is what it is. I try not to condemn anyone for what they want to do in their game, whether I find it weird or not. It is their game, after all and they can play it as they want--whether that is a mage fanatic or a wanting to throw someone from an airlock. It's a game, a break from reality.

Also, these threads are arenas. The OP doesn't care why people hate Liara. He knows the reasons already. Anyone who has been on these forums any length of time has seen the reasons. They make these threads and then sit back until chaos ensues. I drop in threads like these myself when bored, I think most people do. Especially when the forums are kind of dead.

I grew to love/hate her because she never seemed consistent. Her character completely changes with each game, she even seemed to change a bit between ME2's main story and the Shadow Broker DLC. I liked all the Liara's, as their own characters... But I missed the first one and it was irritating having to meet strangers with her name, voice, and face.

Indeed - she is the Leliana (devs seem to love female characters that start with L ^^) of ME and she is indeed inconsistent (hell, she comes across like someone with multiple personality disorder -.- (scared scientist to information broker who threatens people with mind attacks and Asari-Commando-Teams)

I don't hate her - but I like other characters more (like say Miranda, Tali, Garrus, Grunt, Wrex...hell even Kaidan (and he is kind of dull IMO)...I only like Ashley less from the ME1 main cast...her views are incompatible with mine (she is almost always the one to die on Virmire!))

greetings LAX

I quite like Liara, I don't like how she is forced upon the player to be the main, almost canon LI.

She's gotten way too much screen time.

I've always seen her as that little sister, never romanced her.

I found Liara in ME1 to be creepy. I'm not sure how you romance her. It would be like romancing a 12-yer-old with a crush on you. Maybe some people find that sort of puppy love attractive, but it made me uncomfortable. The last thing I wanted was to go talk to her and here all about asari mating practices right out of the gate!

In ME2, she was bland.

In ME3, she was better, and I might have liked her a lot more if she'd always been like across the series. However, I am still irritated to no end every time I do the Thessia mission and a clearly emotionally overwrought Liara demands to come along. I always want to say "No, you don't!" when she says, "Shepard, I have to come." In my mind, I'm a professional trained to deal with just like everyone else in the crew, but she's still an archeologist. It doesn't matter how capable she seems to have become, she hasn't trained to deal with it, and I should be able to put my foot down and tell her no. And, I'm right. She spins the whole mission in clear distress. It might even be part of why we fail.

cause she's forcefed to us, she's blatantly a writer favorite, her personality can be extremely annoying, she's borderline useless, and I can go on, but those cover my main complaints

Eh, Miranda was also force-fed on players in ME2, too.  And Jacob, to a lesser degree.

Since people are complaining that Liara is useless, the content that was moved from her to Traynor should have stayed with Liara.

Problem solved!

I think one of the things that bug me is the undercurrent of sexual tension that you can't opt out of. Garrus is also a forced friend but there's no implication of romantic interest unless you're actually romancing him. But it's always there with Liara.

I'm surprised anyone would complain she's useless. She's a pure biotic good for combos, Prothy expert, pointed conduit to Ilos, became Shadow Broker. Sure you can complain about that being the writers' way of forcing her onto you, but I wouldn't have expected 'uselessness' to be a prime problem. Jacob is a better example of useless lol.

Yeah, Thane's role in my playthrough was to make sure the life support room stayed clean.

I've found her useless in battle on hard difficulties, she dies if someone sneezes on her. At the very least Miranda was the second-in-command and could be ignored in non-business related ways. Liara still has to get her hug and Shepard still has to be grateful to see her.

I've given him crew escort duty once or twice in the SM, out of pity.

I found that quite a few of the squad members become super squishy on higher difficulty if you don't babysit them. Jack, Thane, Jacob, Kasumi (annoyingly breaking cover constantly) and Javik loved to hit the dirt too. Tali's enviro-suit must be a good luck charm because I've never had her go down.

I always give that role to Tali. Sorry Thane, you'll just hold the line, probably hiding behind Grunt.

Eh, people who complain she's useless simply need to l2p.

Not significantly better than most of the others, and Jacob can successfully lead fire teams.

Useless? I'm rather surprised that people don't complain Liara is overpowered. She has the most damage dealing potential and is the best crowd controller in the game.

The only biotic team member that's more powerful is [potentially] Shepard.

Bah, that's what Garrus is for.

Technically, by that logic, that's actually what Miranda is for. She doesn't require loyalty in the second leader run to survive, where the other two do.

Thane dies no matter what in all specialist roles ... except for escort duty, which is universal. Push comes to shove? Jacob could lead both teams and still have the oomph to fulfill that role.

And she has twice as many powers as Liara, plus bonus power, as well as possibly better cooldown times and loads more damage. Really, saying Shepard is better isn't saying much, since Shepard is better than pretty much anybody.

Like I said, people simply need to l2p.
