Both approachs seem nice (no fitness squishy kit on silver/gold, and tough OP kits on gold to get used to the pace), so you could just mix it up. And if you r too much of a burden in a gold game apologize and leave :), it s not a big deal.

Also

Having a look at you manifest I think you really should have been buying more Veteran packs and fewer Reserve packs.

The OP must adapt like krogans do. "Survival is an honor."

And what's better than surviving while dishing out headbutts, too?

But seriously, playing a Krogan and hearing the hearty chuckle can ease that tension someone might experience playing gold.

The chuckle never ceases to amaze me... it's all laughs and giggles until a Banshee shuts you up for the entire wave... :S

I made friends with a Juggy. They make a great team. It's also been a while since I was picked up with my Hammerlord. I dare say he is inclined to not being instakilled...

I hardly get instant killed with the Krolord since I'm not as stupid as PUGs who go around and get instant-FUUU by Brutes. And that's just the beginning of the fun of it.

Well, all you need to do is learn to adjust to finding cover more and making sure all enemies are mostly in front of you and not all around you. It's the number one mistake I see pugs starting out Gold make. Start by picking more tank characters like Krogans, Batarians and such. Once you learn that, you can ever start playing Gold with a new manifest like I am right now for my new PS3 account. But in your case since you are just starting out, make sure you have armour piercing mods or ammo on, lol. ... or use a projectile weapon that don't need those things, like the Geth Shotgun that staggers all things too as a bonus.

You are advising the OP to learn the hardest way, which may not be the fastest. Sure if he learns it he will be ready with other kits as well, but this may not be the best way to learn.

I wasn't advicing the OP the learn the hardest way, just a moderately hard way. There are much harder ways to do it. ;)

Yes, it may or may not be the best way. It all depends on the person, and some other factors. But in my opinion there's a good chance that it indeed is the best way.

Also, I find BSN's elite's aversion to certain weapons is a bit silly. What makes you into a good player is not playing this or that weapon but whether you are open minded and willing to learn.

Word. Blowing this elitist hot air about what kits or weapons are off-limits or dishonorable or whatever towards newer players trying to transition to higher difficulties is just silly. If anyone should use "crutch" kits or weapons, its newer players trying to move up. Better to branch out to the kits with a steeper learning curve (the "glass canons" and whatnot) once you're comfortable with the difficulty level.

Really, guys?

I'm not saying certain kits or weapons shouldn't be used because I don't like them, because I think they're examples or crappy game design or because it's "dishonorable or whatever".

Instead, I'm saying that using them is an inefficient way to learn to play the game.

If that makes me an elitist, well... think what you like.

If you have/manage to unlock the Turian Ghost, I recommend trying Gold with it. I'm a pretty average player, and I'm quite comfortable with it + a Saber in Gold (ending up usually 1st or 2nd, sometimes 3rd and never 4th). OMGEPEENTHREAD! No, it isn't. Shut up. Just stating facts.

I mean, I think it's an excellent Gold class which you've to be VERY bad levelling it to do it wrong. Heck, I even recall saving the day a couple of times, which with my previous builds on Gold was pretty much way beyond my dreams D:

I think everyone is so used to the preachers of BSN (you know who you are!) commanding people how to play as if they have some authority on the matter, that more measured advice like yours gets lumped in with it.

For what it's worth though, I disagree with you. When I first transitioned to gold, I used the TGI a lot, and moved across to other kits once I was used to how enemies behave on gold. I don't think it's damaging in any way to do that.

Being able to solo bronze and silver before going up to gold, is a good way to tell if your ready.
Also make sure you have your common/uncommon guns and mods capped. A pierce mod is critical on gold.
Also join this group Alliance Hazard Force (PS3 ME3 Group) and request a chat. There will be people willing to give you advice and you'll play with the best of the PS3.

You got lots of good (and some confusing) advice here, OP! I'll add a bit from my recent foray into starting anew on an alt account.

-- Playing with friends or the Alliance Hazard Force is a good idea -- in principle.  Sadly, these days there aren't many people in the AHF chat room. And odds that 'friends' are available just when you are is low.

-- Pugging gold generally works out OK but, unless you're dropped into a game-in-progress, be very selective on lobbies you stay in. Two or more low level players (low XP points with  no gear equipped, etc.) is a bad sign.

-- Do you host?  If not -- try (provided you've got good internet)!  Kits (especially Adepts and Vanguards) play much smoother as host.  Plus, you can see ahead of time if you've got reasonable players on the team.

-- With your manifest I'd try playing:

Salarian or Geth infiltrator with Valiant, Black Widow, or Indra  (BW makes good use of all those Stabilization Mods).  You have to quick-scope with sniper rifles or you get reduced damage. Take advantage of the PS3's 'aim assist' here!

Asari Valkyrie, Fury, Awakened Collector, Vorcha Sentinel with either the Paladin or the Tempest.  With their powers you barely need a gun.

The AIU or Jugg with your Crusader or Piranha -- good way to save on medi-gels and ops packs.

In nearly every pug I play there is at least one player with low level equipment who will get carried along with the rest of the team.

Thats not a bad thing . Most if not all players have been in a game at some stage where they were the least experienced in their early gold matches.

Really only need 2 experienced players to complete a game. As long as you help with objectives and dont run off by yourself making it hard for others to revive you then no one should care about the fact that you are new to playing Gold.

If you do get any grief just exit . Plenty of players are cool with helping you out as long as you try to be a team player.

edit : Also some practical advice from Computron above

So much this ^

I'm more than happy to carry low level players (I'm on PSN BTW id = hostaman), especially if they have gear and consumables equiped - even at level 1.

It can even be beneficial for you to bleed-out a couple of times during a match so you can follow a player and see how he deals with the enemy.

I too can recommend Sirians vids.  It was one of his vids on effective pugging that changed my play style from utter rubbish to just rubbish  :D

For my transition to gold, I believe I used the SI and GI. GI may be a power house, but it is very unforgiving for new players trying him out. As his low health makes him an unfortunate victim of frequent swarmer attacks. I am a firm believer in playing the medium to squishy classes to get used to the pacing of the game. Another thing you might want to keep in mind is the enemy composition for each wave in all four factions. I believe that there is a link to a spreadsheet outlining enemy composition in the resource library. I was playing like most people around here since launch. I kind of advise against using the AIU, TGI, and Juggy heavily only because while they do forgive many mistakes most new players use them to the point where they rely on them. Feel free to play what you want OP, as this is just my two cents.

This is a decent start on Gold for the Demolisher:

You can alter the build with various weapons or swap the PAIII for CMIII for more survivability.  That will depend on your play style.

Looking at your manifest, I'd recommend this Justicar build: http://kalence.drupa...563!!..N1!GE5A5 Requires decent headshotting skills, though. Other weapons you have that you should try on it: Wraith, GPS, Raptor, Mattock, GPR...

You should really max out those uncommon weapons, Mattock would be especially useful right now. Also, my deepest condolences for your lack of Claymore. :(

My thoughts:

IMO, the challenge about moving up to a higher difficulty is adapting to the different style of gameplay - especially silver to gold transition. Gold had more bosses, way more aggressive AI and you get punished for your mistakes a lot more compared to silver.

Many here suggested that you stay away from juggernaut, AIU, TGI etc. While I acknowledge their opinions, I am not going to suggest it myself. You mentioned that juggernaut is one of your favorites. Go ahead and use the juggernaut for your first few gold games. Use the kit you are most comfortable with (it could even be TGI or AIU) and get a grasp of how enemy AI works on gold.

Now here's the key part: Once you get comfortable with the basics of gold, try switching kits. Shelve the TGI, AIU, etc. Start using kits with fewer health and shields, and what you consider tricky kits. Then try no-cyclonic builds and no-fitness builds. Do it in steps - there is no need to hurry. This will not only help you become a better player, but will help you enjoy the game more. Using the same handful of kits and weapons is quite boring. Having variety makes this game quite fun.

It may not be the fastest way to move up to gold, but it is a smoother transition and you won't feel overwhelmed. Add people from here to help you out with some gold games. But if you want to get better, I'd say pug as often as you can, especially in the beginning stages. Pugging teaches you something that playing with 3 other good people doesn't.

Sorry, this is kind of off-topic, but this relates to the overall topic of this thread which is "moving up"

I was looking at Silver games but the game landed me in a Platinum lobby, for some reason. I admit I am scared at first, and I almost bailed out but what the heck, let's do it since I am curious about how I will fare. So I switched to my most comfortable kit, Asari Huntress Infiltrator, and equipped Paladin III (hahaha) with Warp 2, Power Amplifier Module 3, Stronghold Package V, and Pistol Amp III.

I honestly think I wouldn't make it since this is my first Platinum ever and my weapon was extremely sub-optimal (I think?). But in the end, this is the result:

We got hack/upload, escort, escort. Couldn't be happier :D :D :D Sure it was Reapers, arguably (maybe? I don't know) the easiest of the bunch but regardless, I was so happy I got this kind of result for my first Platinum match.

Thanks for all the advice, kind words and encouragement you guys provided. Some great stuff in here and I believe, with some effort, I can actually make something out of it :) Sure, there will probably be blood and tears, but where's the fun without that!

I'll be sure to add the kind people who offered their help to my friend list. I'm moving to the new apartment soon, so it's somewhat doubtful how soon I can get my internet connection, but I will work on it. After that, we can try and rock some reapers/Cerberus/Collectors/geth.

Also, congratulations to you LB. Impressive work :)

Also, yeah, I should probably be hitting Reserves less, but I just can't resist the lure of new characters. Will buy more Veterans from now on, to fill out my uncommons and consumables.

As long as you have a team of friends that are decent at Silver you're ready for it. Just make sure that it's fun and not a grind.

You accidentally cut off the time ;) all the factions on platinum are fairly even difficulty wise, Only Collectors wave 8 and 10 stand out.

Usually do ok headshot wise in games and I *do* like the Mattock with my Justicar. Love the Harrier but hate running to ammo boxes that quickly. I am usually pretty aggressive with my Demolisher, seeking out the enemy and not camping.

My lack of weapons I like/want in packs (as well as no Talon Merc) really irks me.

Also occurs to me I have done well with the Asari Vanguard as well.

*Just looking at your Justicar build, I think I am pretty close to that. Probably reset her and follow it, keep using the Mattock and run on Bronze till I'm smooth and move to Silver (which I did a couple of runs on Glacier with her already).

Play with whatever kit you're most competent with, for me it was the Fury when I moved to Gold.. funny part was I tried using the Jug to move to gold and I sucked it! I didn't like the feel of that kit.

Having no gold kills medal does not make you lousy player. Players who keep dying are... and I don´t like the word lousy, but it certainly makes them liability and is, in my opinion, far more dangerous then if you have low damage output.

Just few tips, on top of my head:

Play with the kit you know well and you feel most comfortable with.

If you feel you are in team that is not strong enough, definitely try to stick with them, unless they are all partying in some ultra stupid place(and they sometimes do). It will make revives much better and easier.

When reviving, try to do it from cover, so you are not exposed. Same goes for hacking devices. Find a position that is most covered from enemy fire. Almost all devices have a spot like that.

Check your back often. Enemies sneak upon players more on gold then on silver. Also, for same reason, try to not stay too long in one place. Or you can also get swarmed.

Dodge a lot. You can dodge your way to safety if you are in tight spot.

Knowing spawn points helps as you can kind of anticipate from where next enemies are likely to come.

Watch out for turrets. They are always at the same places. If you are playing against Cerberus, check those places before you run there. Especially if you hear engineers setting them up.

And good luck!  :)

(also don´t underestimate swarms, little bastards will strip you of your shields and explode in your face if you leave them hanging around)  :)
