Do you know all important game mechanics (shield gate, armor mitigation, ammo types, boss HS, donotspamshieldboostonteamates, combos and so on)?
Then you are ready.
I don't know what HS in "boss HS" refers to and I don't know why it would be bad to spam shield boost on team mates, since that legitimately seems like a good thing to do.
Other than that, yeah, I know about all those things.

It's funny to see all these people overthinking the so-called transition from silver to gold.
What I did when I started playing was play a couple of bronze matches, about a dozen of silver ones, then I got bored and went straight onto gold.
It was harsh, I would be lieing if I said it wasn't. But I'd say it worked out for me in the end
Well, apparently you've got a lot of followers... Approximately half of current gold pugs are borderline silver players. I'm just waiting for the day when it starts to work out for them as well.
Could be a long wait.

Don't know what shield gate is. Also, since I like the Volus Engineer… what does spamming shield boost do to team mates? I would've thought that was a good thing.

Generally speaking it is a good thing, especially in hacks and escort objectives, but shield boost has a very goofy mechanic to it. If you shield boost a teammate while they're mid reload, it'll lock the controls until they use a heavy melee. It's harmless if it happens once or twice a game, but when a volus rides your ass the entire game and spams shield boost, it'll happen more frequently which would be very annoying and borderline rage inducing.

I don't know. I noticed that whenever I play volus engie other players tend to group around me, which is pretty much exclusive to volus. When I'm not playing a volus, then tend to scatter to four winds.
I'm not saying you're lying or anything similar, but it is pretty fun to watch. Maybe I'm just lucky. But I do know that, as a volus, I tend to bring the team together, even outside the objectives.

The damage reduction is nice, but personally as long as you keep in mind that being ready to boost in a pinch is more helpful than boosting on practically every cooldown then you're good to go. There will still be your standard people that will fling disparaging remarks your way because you're not playing a TGI or an AIU instead of a Volus, but obviously they are fools and should be eaten.
(Also it's a crapshoot as to whether or not people in your random PUG lobby will even know about the lock-up glitch.)

Spamming shield boost is a way of trolling, because you inevitably will trigger the glitch. I know I keep my distance from Volus that do it.

Generally I don't like to be shield boosted cause it can lock me up thus causing death. What I prefer and suggest is that you, cloak, fire proxy mine at the enemies feet and re-cloak. Save shield boost for near death.

Well, that's true for many PUG games, but the thing is that actually good players (by BSN standards) don't really need shield boost to stay alive - they are good at avoiding taking hits. So everythime you use shield boost you're not using some offensive power, which means that, on the whole, you're not being all that helpful. That said, whenevery you hear someone close to you shout out "My shields are gone!", a shield boost will be welcome. And it can make some nasty hack objectives much easier.
So if you find others are gathering around you, they probably want you to keep them alive. But please don't pick the best player in the team and follow him around the map spamming shield boost. Everytime someone does that to me, I pretty much want to strangle the guy.

Heavy melee doesn't work for the Fury. Anyone know if there is a way to get a Fury out of the glitch?

The best part is tying to run away from the trolus intentionally trying to lock you up all match... just waiting for a reload... watching you use that javelin... and just when you think he's on the other side of the map... BAM! just as a pyro turns the corner... then come the teabags.
only had this happen once, but he was successful in making me rage quit. locked me up 7 times in four rounds.

I've heard taking hard cover, then rolling to an adjacent hard cover, will sort it out, but I haven't tested that.

Thanks for all the advice, kind words and encouragement you guys provided. Some great stuff in here and I believe, with some effort, I can actually make something out of it
Sure, there will probably be blood and tears, but where's the fun without that!
I'll be sure to add the kind people who offered their help to my friend list. I'm moving to the new apartment soon, so it's somewhat doubtful how soon I can get my internet connection, but I will work on it. After that, we can try and rock some reapers/Cerberus/Collectors/geth.
Also, congratulations to you LB. Impressive work
Also, yeah, I should probably be hitting Reserves less, but I just can't resist the lure of new characters. Will buy more Veterans from now on, to fill out my uncommons and consumables.
Use this guide as a road map to max out your items. The big packs are nice to buy, but people are also very judgmental on gold and more likely to kick on gold, if your weapon loadout looks bare, like having an SMG with only 1 mod. You don't want to look like a leecher, especially when you're making the transition to gold. Use the correct equipment and people should give you a chance.
Unlocking Packs Road Map
Well, I made a pretty decent performance with asari adept with Phalanx, incendiary ammo and cyclonics against reapers. She was... fun to play
Much more of a glass cannon, but still very enjoyable. I also love playing as volus engie, though I spend most of the time running around, boosting the shields of other players and setting up recon mines. Not sure how viable that strategy would be on Gold, since little bugger is, well... fragile.
My main problem seems to be that I can't seem to keep up a decent performance. I'll rock one game and utterly suck the next one, though I'm usually pretty consistent within the group. Seems like it really does depend on who you play with.
And I really need to drop the mentality that score matters. Like, at all.
Due to the lack of decent weapons in your manifest, I would recommend you play power kits, like Adepts and Engineers as they can do quite well without a good weapon, unlike Soldiers and Infiltrators. The Asari, Human Adept, Fury, and Cerberus kits are great kit for newcomers as they rely on power damage over weapon damage for their main damage output. Turians, Geth, and other weapon oriented kits are very difficult for newcomers as they rely primary on weapon damage, which is based on what is available in your weapon manifest. Grenade kits are some of the best kits in the game, but due to the fact they rely on grenades makes them a poor choice for newcomers, as you lack the grenade capacity gear. They become a viable kit when you unlock higher grenade capacity gear.
I would also recommend you choose kits that you are comfortable with and play them in a more tactical role, even if you are aggressive in silver, as the transition from silver to gold is alot harder to get accustomed to than from bronze to silver. Another good tactic, when in a game, is to analyze your teammates and follow one around the map and detonate there powers/play a support role. This helps you get accustomed to gold by learning people's playstyles. Teammates also appreciate when you try and create squad synergy. Geth Trooper/Geth Engineer and Asari Commando/Asari Justicar have great combo detonation synergy among each other.
On gold and plat difficulties it is good ideal to go to the opposite end of the map on wave 11, extraction, even if your squad is trying to camp at the extraction. It is better to wait at the opposite end until 30 seconds and then rush to the LZ.
I would give you some 1v1 training, unfortunately I am on vacation in India and my PS3 died.

Well, I'm actually recommending getting comfortable with those squishier setups on silver first before moving to gold. I should've made this clear from the start. My bad.
Fair enough. Two things though- not everyone even has the kits you're talking about when they want to move up; everyone's at the mercy of RNG, and for instance, the Jugg and Krentinel were two of the first Rare kits I unlocked, and were two of the kits I used most when I moved up to Gold, before I had even unlocked kits like the GI, Drellgod/adept, Fury, ACA, QME, DAI, and so on.
The other thing is, given how daunting the manifest is, and how long it takes to make ANY headway getting 33k credits per match (i.e. on silver), I'm not sure that I can fault anyone for wanting to take, e.g. their newly unlocked Juggernaut or AIU, up to Gold rather than learn the ropes on Silver with squishier kits, especially since after 1000 hours I still haven't maxed my own manifest.
But if you've unlocked the characters, and don't mind waiting a little longer to move up to Gold, then sure, your way certainly would have its benefits.

That doesn't seem entirely fair. The glitch doesn't seem to happen often enough to justify actually avoiding being near a volus (especially if you know that a HM will get you out of it), and as other posters have mentioned, getting a shield boost at the right moment can be a life saver especially in one of those brutal center hacks or escorts straight through the middle of a map.

The Juggy wasn't there when I did that transition...
I did it with Drell, mostly
Sounds painful. Still, if you were bored after only 12 games in Silver, my guess is you probably mastered the learning curve on this game faster than most people.
