Searching for a planet would be a good way to start off, and then a competition with other citadel races for control of that world would be a natural source of conflict.

Nope, to close to the original trilogy.

If we're to take EC, Earth is just fine. Well, sort of. Lower Destroy doesn't do so well.

"Tuchanka has plenty of room! And a guard dog named Kalros!" - Wrex, ME3
But yeah, that's too close to the original trilogy.

I don't like the searching part. It would be too close to ME3 and personally I like ME because of the culture. I'd like to travel through established and detailed worlds as the main objective, not killing varrens and bandits in random planets and conducting atmospheric and soil tests.
If the new homeworld was already established and we were dealing with competition that would be better. Personally I'd like to play the role of the head of an intelligence cell. Spying in the already established world, creating a network of bases and listening posts across planets etc. Somewhere in the middle a story arc will pop up that will concentrate our efforts and set the stage for the next games.
I sincerely hope that what Mr Casey said about distant planets at the edge of the galaxy doesn't mean that the game will be about terminating varrens with extreme prejudice

With the new ending don't they basically say they rebuilt Earth better then it was before? Wouldn't it now be the hub of the galaxy with the Citadel parked overhead? Sure there will be signs on the planet of that war after all Europe still has buildings with bullet holes in it from WW2 but the cities themselves are bigger and better then ever.
