GStommylee ... people don't complaining about installing game five times in 24h , they are complaning if they can install game five times in total ( what is clearly stated in BW ME2 FAQ )

What sort of DRM will Mass Effect 2 employ?

* Mass Effect 2 will require a unique CD key to install on PC, and then you must have the disc in the tray to play the game. Additionally if you registered for the Cerberus Network, you must have an EA account to register your game too. If you purchased the digital version on PC, you will be able to install the game 5 times.

I hope some BW guys will reply us soon to clarify this situation .

For people who bought DDE from Steam , as I did , here is a thread on steam forums :

Bioware already said its the same as dragon age when they announced it.

Nope, they said " Digital versions will use the retailers protection system." That's in no way the same as saying "same as Dragon Age" because EA has more than one DRM method they have used lately. Some of them customer friendly, others not so much.

If you purchased the digital version on PC, you will be able to install the game 5 times.

This probably means for EA digital store.  THen you need to read what Jazharah said.

Jazharah wrote...

You can find everything regarding the new activationsystem, first sported by DragonAge here:

EA support article: activation

Excerpt that answers your question and shows there's no need to worry:

What happens when I've reached the maximum number of machine launches?
# While EA's online activation solution will allow you to activate
your game on as many machines as you like, you can launch your game on
no more than five machines in any 24-hour period.
# You will have to wait to launch your game on an additional machine
until 24-hours after you launched the first game during the previous
24-hour period.

Just requote what Jazharah said earlier.

Will all of EA's downloadable PC titles use the new online activation system?
  • Not necessarily - this is decided on a product by product basis.
From the same FAQ. It's Dragon Age specific DRM FAQ and has nothing to do with future titles unless they specifically mention an upcoming game using the same DRM. ME2 support article does not say anything about using the Dragon Age DRM.

If this ME2 FAQ is right , and even we on Steam have only 5 activation , I will kick myself in the head for paying 60 euros for DDE and waiting till 29 january , instead of downloading pirate version three days ago and enjoying ME2 this weekend .

Agreed. No point arguing until an official source confirms it either way. But currently the official FAQ says 5 activations and that's it.

I just read there: http://www.masseffect.com/info/faq/ that PC digital edition will be limited to 5 installations in total.
Does anybody know, why such stupid limit? Is there any chance it will be cancelled for some time in the future?

That's what you get for not buying a hardcopy. :P

Silly newb paying the same price for a virtual copy when you could get the hardcopy for the exact same price.

*Snuggles ME2 CE hardcopy*

Steam uses their own DRM and there is no install limit as part as STEAM's DRM its only if the game includes 3rd party DRM which it does not for ME2.  They speicifcally mention on all of their steam products pages if it includes 3rd party DRM or not.

Steam DRM ties everything to your account so its 1 game activation per account.  No need to really limit how many installs unless the publisher adds their own DRM.

okay guys

Jack Lamden posted this from the old ME2 forums.

The Copy protection is different now.

The physical copies of the game use a disk check, there's no online checks and no activation limits.

The Steam version uses the Steam copy protection, and that's it.

The rest of the Digital Distribution builds use a non-securom copy protection method which does an online check, but I don't belive there is an activation limit.

So, today I have received an answer from EA Support.

It seems, that they really loves to shoot into their feet, because in case of digital version of ME2 there will be only 5 installations in total available to buyer.

I really don't understand this.

Well, good to know at least, that clearly rules out any form of digital distribution. I'll order a physical copy instead.

Rather odd that the Steam and D2D protection isn't enough though.

I believe its preventing you from having more than 5 installs going simultaneously - not in total, so its not going to prevent you from playing the game at some point.

Which is fine with me if thats the case.

If not, I bought the game to do what I please with it. If I want to reinstall in 20 times in a single day for some bizarre reason I should be able to do so - and its none of their damn concern after I have plonked down the money for it. Damn ****s.

Did we ever get confirmation does it use the dragon age method or the classic 5 install forever limit.
