Only one of the Dragon Age romances have produced a child, why is that?

It all depends on the story constraints, sure, but it's not something I think should be avoided. And there's just a lot of story potential if you want to take it head on, and DA is built in such a way that it offers some unique oppurtunities there, like I mentioned. You also have a dynastic element with some characters, and the idea of lineage that could factor into the series over time. There's just a lot of interesting things you can do with it in DA.

I also just want to say that Fable and that kind of thing is nothing like what anyone's suggesting. Those child characters are at least as interesting as the spouses and the other basic npcs in those games though, which isn't saying much, so I don't get why people single them out. Just convenient strawmen, I think.

I'd like to see children mentioned in some epilogue stills, in certain circumstances, but not more than that. I definitely wouldn't want to see pregnancy or children being born in game with more of a presence than the dwarven noble side quest in Origins.

I don't know why the writers are so against happily ever after endings for player characters when they never revisit those characters anyway. We haven't seen the Warden or Hawk since the end of their games' DLC quests and probably won't see them in any other games for technical reasons. Why not let our characters in future games retire peacefully (if such an ending fits with your decisions)?

Speaking of children it'd be funny if our Inquisitor were to encounter a certain female elf with a human or dalish kid depending on what your Warden did (can't really tell if he was dalish).

Just out of pure curiosity, why is it that only Morrigan's romance produces a child? Why not other romances in DA?

Hm...as it is a game and child (unless you take the Kirkwall-Road with a story spanning say 20+ years) has no real story value (It can't fight alongside you as a baby, it can't really talk etc. - the only thing you could do is add some kidnapping quest/story-line or something with the child being ill and the cure needing to be found etc.)

Otherwise I would say:

Would you have children in the middle of a war (and yes, both Ferelden (Blight!) and Kirkwall (Mages vs. Templars) are in a state of war for most of the time we are there...hell, there is murder and bloodshed all around us..would you really bring a child into this?)?

I wouldn't (ok, I would not have children during peace-time either...don't want any, never did - knew that from early on (my own childhood...I was 8 or 9 when I decided that going that route was never for me...I might change my mind, granted, but not likely...I am thinking about a vasectomy currently!)...hell, for most of the characters there is not even a need to have a child (unless you count marrying Anora or - if you are female - Alistair...)

Even more so:

Would many players actually want that (forced upon them - I would be ok if the put in an opt-out...)?

I mean, many think there is too much focus on romances already (!)

In the end it would probably not be worth it, I think (on the other hand of course I am not impartial on this, as I don't want children (not that I hate them...dislike them - maybe...teens less then toddlers and little kids)

greetings LAX

I think the world of DA is quite violent not just Kirkwall when Hawke lived there so it's not irresponsible to have a child in there. I think they just don't know that life could be something different and better than life in Kirkwall for example.

Forcing my PC to have a child in a game and would I mind that depends on many things. In DAO I wouldn't have like it because if I would have gotten pregnant then it would have meant that I would had to stop fighting so everyhting would have been ruined. So in DAO as a female PC I wouldn't have wanted to have a child in the middle of the game. However In DA2 when romancing Fenris it would have been very interesting to get pregnant and have a child because there you would have had time to do that and I would have liked to see how Fenris would have reacted to it.

Joking aside, I've never liked the idea of babies for rpg characters IN GAME. Especially for rpg hero saves the world type games. I have children irl. The amount of work that goes into to the care and raising of babies does not coincide with being the super hero of the universe in question. Our protag's are busy, and putting a child in the mix of all that would be dangerous and irresponsible. Not to mention the very fact that eventually it would lead to "bad guy hurts family" quest line and while that's OKAY when the family members are adults, it's really REALLY trite and gross when the family members are children.

Also as a parent irl I severely dislike the idea of handing off my child to someone to raise while I fix (or destroy) the world. So honestly children in these games are best left to fanfiction. I'm okay with the idea of my Hawke eventually having a rugrat out there somewhere once she left Kirkwall. But even then, Hawke fought the Arishok and did you see what he could do with that sword if he hit you? O_O.

The whole child thing is one of the many reasons why Viconia is absolutely the best romance in the Baldur's Gate saga, hands down.

So yeah, you just can't do pregnancy properly during the game without mandatory time-skips, and more often than not time-skips simply suck (the larger, the more so), so while I'm open to that particular method, I'm wary of it.

I really do however want (the option) to be a parental or older sibling figure to some orphan kid(s), though. We'll see whether Cole manages to scratch that particular itch. (I love him either way.)

Having kids is not necessarily a happily ever after ending for PCs. Neither is basically being with one person forever.

Miniature giant?  :P

Take heart, fellow adventurers, for you have curried the favor of Boo, the only miniature giant space hamster in the Realm!

As for kids in game, I'm also in favor of leaving that to headcanon.  Though it would make sense for the possibility to be brought up in romances.  I mean, in a potentially long-term relationship, details like that get brought up.

Because it's a waste of time, energy and money to develop that arc in such a way that everyone would be happy?

It's not a waste if it's well done. Beyond that, it'd be on your personal preference like any other arc, if you think it's worth it. I believe quality would tell out for most people that would play it.
