General question: Did you ever save Loghain at the Landsmeet once to see more of his backstory? It does add more depth to his character (though I usually still see him dead by end game).

Yeah I've done that once. But like someone else here said, I still found his behaviour to be kinda irrational, and because of that I never felt like I could relate to him in the slightest. To me, he always felt like the type of character that exists and behaves the way it/he does because the games story needs him to, and so fleshing out his backstory doesn't really help, even though it's nice in itself.

I feel that in for example Game of Thrones, the story is being created by the characters and not the other way around. I think it gives the characters great depth and believability. I often felt like the actions of Loghain and The Illusive man simply did not make sense, afterwards they'd always feel like just tools for the story to function, even though I would try to understand them, and dig into the reasons and try to see their point of view.

That was exactly the feeling I got.  His actions don't really seem to quite add up to a consistent rational character so much as character shoehorned into a role that didn't quite fit.

Sun Li gets my vote, There's really no one else that compares. I'd explain why, but I'm too tired at the moment.

Very, very hard to pick, as I love several of these guys as antagonists. Almost picked Irenicus, because he did make Baldur's Gate II feel very... personal, which is one of the reasons why that game stayed as my favorite before Dragon Age. Still, had to go with Sun Li because of the whole mentor and betrayal aspect throwing me for a loop first time around.

Also, played every game on the list, whoo! I feel accomplished. That or I have too much free time...

Hard one! I loved several of these. Illusive Man, Saren & Loghain were my favs, Sun Li however, was the biggest plottwist for me.

I almost went for Loghain because of how much I hated him.

Switched to Sun Li because his story was handled well.

I myself am a TIM fan, although i despise the character in ME 3.

But Mass Effect 2 made the man interesting enough for me to bare through the train wreck his character became.

Honestly, I would like to see more of the Catalyst, or Catalyst-like beings in the next Mass Effect.

I think with the proper effort, it could be a great antagonist.

'' And in the end, as the darkness takes me, I am ... nothing ''

Malak was a great villain in Kotor. Ruthless, calculating, and powerful. And his final boss battle and his words were some of the defining moments of Kotor

Honestly, for most of the game I didn't find him terribly compelling.  Until the reveal, it was mostly "Muhahaha!  I'm megalomaniacal sith #2!  I'm here to conquer the galaxy and do evil things!  Muahahahaha!"

Maybe it was the fact that I was only 7 at the time that made me in awe of him. You can't deny his ruthlessness and cold-heart. Blowing up Taris ( :crying:),, torturing Bastilla ... And in the end when he finally realizes what he had done, that moment when he wonders how things could have been different, shows how badly the dark side had corrupted him and made me feel bad. They both had good intentions in the Mandalorian Wars, both got corrupted, but one was spared and the other was condemned to darkness...

Don't get me wrong, he's definitely far from Bioware's worst. He gets more interesting once you meet him face to face and find out you're true history.

I've never played Jade Empire, but I'm going to vote for Sun Li because everything I've heard about him makes him stand out for me as far as Bioware antagonists go.

Go play NAO  ^_^

As Bioware games go, its rather short, so it wouldn't take you too long (Though the surprise might be ruined for you by now)

Very close between Loghain and the Illusive man. Too me their both very complex characters and I would consider neither to be "evil"

Master Li's evil laugh in the statue ending makes him not my first choice. Imho he should have nodded approvingly instead.

I voted for Loghain because he did what he thought was best for his country and because he stands his ground if you bring him back to Ostagar to rub it in his face.

Lot of tough choices... I liked Sarevok, Irenicus, Saren, Loghain (though Howe was far more villainy in that game).... less about Melissan (too suspicious to begin with) and Mother (Architech was far more interesting character, while Mother was just creepy). But I guess my pick would be Irenicus.

And I am bit mystified about

Spoiler
being such a surprise to so many people, since I saw it totally coming from hints across the game. And I am not that good guessing critical plot points. But yeah, he was pretty good villain too, so no actual complains.

Voted for Sun Li, of course, because that story really was so personal. And made more sense to me than others in similar setups, like Kreia (who I still don't understand!).

But I had to post to defend Loghain's believability. When I was (an Australian) kid Japanese meant Sailor Moon and cold rice in sushi to me. It wasn't until high school history class prompted questions that I realised that my nan loathed them as a huge cruel threat, and she genuinely believes that she is being logical when she tells me that Asian countries have huge populations and we have lots of space, and they all want to invade Aus if the chance comes up. Loghain is pretty similar in that way. And like Loghain, she is perfectly capable of living life otherwise normally, having friends, etc.

It makes me wonder, if he had become a hero fighting the Blight, would he have been the same person with a different focus for hatred?

The flaw isn't in recognizing the threat - its in automatically assuming the threat to a more universal truth, and a future that is inevitable when not directly and fervently opposed.

Same with Loghain towards Orlais. Gotta stop Orlais no matter what, even if it makes him worse than Orlais, and there is no proof that Orlais is aiming to occupy Ferelden ever again.

I voted Irenicus but that may be the D+D and Elf geek in me, Irenicus not only had a great personality and voice actor, with some really scary moments, but he also touched on Elven lore in D+D so he wins bonus points for that. Not to lessen any of the others that have come before or since but yeah.

I think the best Bioware Antagonists are Inquisitor Recon and ObserverStatus. Why arent they on here?
