But again, the Witcher is a different beast than the Dragon Age games. BW can do all kinds of amazing stuff with character models when the character models are fixed or limited to a certain type of armor. Had people not complained so endlessly about companion customization in the ME series and DA2, the companions might have longer/more elaborate hairstyles as part of their overall fixed model, because the hair can be designed around a single set of armor rather than several (see, Isabela's hair, or Miranda's).
And this is to say nothing of the difference between a fixed dude with minimal customization options vs. 8 different protagonists of varying races, heights, and dimensions. While the Witcher devs can focus on perfecting the interplay between Geralt's ridiculous half ponytail and his painted-on chainmail pauldrons, BW has to worry about how the qunari hairs work with and without a variety of horns or how dwarf necks are proportionally shorter than elves or humans, so the hair mesh has to be adjusted to look right etc, etc.
Like, I get that the WItcher series is amazing, and apparently the universe is not big enough for it and DA to both exist and be good, but in this situation especially they cannot be fairly compared because of the customization components that are included, and expected, from the latter.
Yup. It's a compromise they had to decide on. Witcher 3 has compromises by putting all those small details in too. I'm sure DAI will show its advantage over Witcher 3 in other ways like customization. I can't pick 4 races, hairstyles and mold my face how I want in Witcher games. I'm almost positive on the armor/weapon end of things Witcher will be limited too just like it was in the previous 2 games. Less customization for more resources put into smaller detail vs. more customization with less small detail. I guess what you consider small details is subjective to the player. Some might say Dragon Age has more smaller details over Witcher. All depends on the player and what they want.
For me personally, customization >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> pretty flowing hair, cloth physics with cool weapon scabbards

I assume BioWare fixed it in the same way they "fixed" the Mako and inventory in Mass Effect.
To be fair, there was only one way to fix the Mako in ME: euthanasia.

The Baldquisition is here to stay!
Certainly not an issue as far as I'm concerned. Bald PCs are fabulous.

Cole has the longest hair we've ever seen featured with this engine.
Actually, I think Blackwall has the longest hair. He just slicks it back and uses lots of product so it won't move. Don't have to worry about hair physics with that one.

This is about as good as it's probably going to get for players
I hope they haven't removed any of these from the game. I don't mind it not being flowing as long as I can have a bit of length. The elve's human's and the female dwarf's hairstyles all seem ok tbh.
I'm pretty sure I remember Cameron lee saying there would be more styles to choose from than in previous games so at least it probably wont just be a selection of buzzcuts.

Now I'm just going to think of him as a greaser.

Long hair in things like this is just a big GRAB ME sign.
Eh. In a game like Dragon Age worrying about realism to that extent would be pointless. Else we would have to pick on all the other details such as silly, useless and cumbersom armor filled with spikes and other useless doodads. Then complain about the limted weapon variety and then some.

Have any of the games had companions with really long hair? The character with the longest hair in Origins was Sten Everyone else had sholder-length, short hair, put their hair in a bun, or were a golem. Awakening and the DLCs didn't have party members with very long hair, either.
DAII had a few longer hairstyles, default Bethany and Isabela come to mind, but it was still nothing all that extravagant.
Really, as long as we have some variety (not like, say, Mass Effect) I don't care if the longest hair is only to the shoulders.

Can they now? Because I seem to remember a certain DA game with the number 2 in its title that had all companions in the same outfit for the entire game, and the hairs were still not impressive at all. Isabela's hair did not seem to stick to her outfit, unlike Miranda's, and modders have made it available for Hawke so I don't think her outfit is that crucial to make her hair work. And if Isabela's hair is supposed to be an amazing thing I guess our expectations are pretty different.
There were various outfits and hairstyles available to Geralt in the second game. That aside, if you ignore Bioware's greater potential issues with clipping and therefore limitations in what they can do with meshes, the hair in DA3 still looks really bad. Cole's hair texture just does not look good, and neither does Cassandra's, Varric's and Sera's. Even their extremely short hair, which would need minimal adjustments to work for the different races, looks bad. I honestly don't know why, because Cole's face texture is the best I have seen so far (for DA3) and then his hair ruins it. It's such a shame.

I'd like hair options like ME3's Ashley, Miranda, and Allers.

Yeah, all the hair options for females in DA2...what were they thinking? Bowl cut after bowl cut with some god awful bangs... Sure there were a few ok styles - bearable styles I should say, but...gawwd...some of them were just hideous. I'd rather my character be bald. I don't necessarily care about movement as long as they fix the look.

I know there are people who hate the comparison, but CD Project Red is doing a lot better on hair animations, not that hair animations really matter per say... but it seems they are going into the next gen with either a better grasp on technology, greater development skill, a greater desire to fine tune the small details, or some combination thereof.
Yes, I think CDPR is likely the more technologically adept developer.

Long hair is an unrealistic goal. It's a lot of work, both in terms of manhours and computationally for very little gain. If we get long hair, it'll likely just be the stiff, physics-defying stuff we had in DAO. Either that or it'll clip like a pair of hyperactive secateurs.

I'm not sure about that: When DA2 was released it ran flawlessly on my rig, while The Witcher 2 (released 2 months later) had...issues. And not even a reverse mouselook option...Yes, I think CDPR is likely the more technologically adept developer.

It would be great to have long hair in game but I think I will be happy with medium lenght hair and a lot hairstyles to choose from.

It would be pretty strange if that wouldn't be the case, seeing how DA2 is vastly inferior in graphical fidelity.

Bad hair* in videogames has a long tradition. Personally, I think it's beautiful, in its own way, that BioWare continues that tradition.

* Since when did that ruin our enjoyment of videogames, anyway?

So as long as there is something like DA2 shoulder length hair that was similar to Bethany's or Morrigan's style i will be happy.
