Hmmm, kinda torn on this one. There's a lot of room here for interesting character development, and learning more about Fade creatures and such. On the other hand, this is the character that was pretty much responsible for me taking over a month to get through Asunder because he annoyed the living hell out of me to the point that I kept putting the thing down. Which, incidentally, is what I'll be doing to Cole if he looks at me the wrong way even once.
Cole? Oh, Maker have mercy!

It's okay to poke fun at the character because he looks like your stereotypical emo angsty character. But writing him off without giving him a chance? Nah. I'll try to send him back to the Fade though. IMO it's where spirits and demons belong. A chantry got blown up and a rebellion started because of an unchecked spirit (I'll admit that it was a long time coming). They [spirtis/demons] are absolutes in a world that is all but. They don't belong and their interference in the physical world is one of the few legitimate justifications for the persecution of magic.

I think the morality in killing someone who wants to die/be killed is a very touchy subject that we shouldn't delve into.
It's also beside the point, since (Asunder spoilers):
Also this "Cole is emo" stuff is so ridiculous. I thought people gave up using "emo" as a derogative years ago since it had been used so ubiquitously that it didn't even have a meaning anymore.

I just really can't grasp the concept of people wanting to 1) romance Cole, 2) think Cole is attractive
Twilight fans, and lets face it Dragon Age has been written to appeal to that demographic, they love the broody emo types.

I have no idea who this guy is besides what I've read on the forums - An emo, psychotic, whiny baby? I've also read somewhere that he is a ghost...
I just hope that as a character he is fully explored in the game and that his fans aren't disappointed.

Origins LI: Alistair, Zevran, Morrigan, Leliana
DA2 LI: Anders, Isabela, Fenris, Merrill
So out of both games, maybe 2 that could be called "broody emo" types? Whatever you say.

Emo, whiny: no. Psychotic: maybe, though he isn't human so psychology might not exactly apply.

The description seems about right to me.
He isn't driven to kill by instinct. The only reason he kills is because his victims can see him when he does. A psychotic (But understandable on some level) response to the stresses of his condition (Unseeable and always forgotten by everyone he does manage to interact with), yes, an animal, no. He only started these killings just prior to Asunder, if I recall. Before that he's just been living in the darkest reaches of the White Spire's dungeon, invisible to all, for about ten years.

Cole is some sort of fade being(spirit or demon) that through weird ass circumstances came to possess the memories of a young Mage boy of the same name who was locked in a cell by Templars till he died of starvation. Templars burned the corpse, cole wandered the white spire (invisible and alone) for many years, and he 'mercy-kills' despondent mages (no children that the book states) who want to die/have given up on life. Then he meets a Mage named Rhys who can see him, follows him on an adventure and learns how to be a real boy(he gets a basic instruction in morals) and refuses to kill someone begging for it. At the end of the book he comes to terms with being a spirit or demon, an the book ends with him holding a knife to the throat of The Lord Seeker as he holds him(the seeker) accountable for the death of the original cole and as vengeance for the events of the book. "Look into my eyes" is the note the book ends on.I have no idea who this guy is besides what I've read on the forums - An emo, psychotic, whiny baby? I've also read somewhere that he is a ghost...

Book Spoilers below!!:
I'll grant you that point about the word 'instinct' and how it is interpreted. I will say that he would keep on doing what he started in Asunder until he was stopped. I'll also take to task the general thought that he kills only people who want to be killed. As far as I know this info comes into play via Coles interatction with the people in question, it also seems that there is no indication that any of them actually tried to kill themselves before interacting with cole and his presence making it very easy for them to say they want to die. That aspect I always attributed to them being convinced or controlled into wanting to die and cole thus justifying his deeds.

I'm willing to bet that he's the hetero romance option for female protagonists. He certainly fits the description of an emo, self-loathing, lost-hope-puppy ready to be taken advantage of.

He's not. Allowing people to romance someone with the mind of a child is too much even for Bioware.

It is not the broody emo types but having them certainly helps, the reason that the Dragon Age series and the Twilight series share the same fanbase is because they appeal to the same fantasies and desires of their fanbases.

Firstly I'd like to see statistics that they have the same fanbase. You seem to be counting on a lot more men liking Twilight than do, considering Dragon Age has both a strong male and female gamer population. Secondly, what fantasies and desires? Romance in general?
Edit: Bleh, totally off-topic. I'll stop.

Alistair....first time sweet and charming boy next door
Zebras......suave and experienced foreign dude, generic lilting accent
Leliana..... Idk gets a pass
DA2
Anders and fenris: ANGST ANGST ANGST ANGST YOU ARE MY ANCHOR IN A SEA OF MISERY AGNST!!!!!!!! (And because of their most strident supporters saying stuff like "you don't know what they went through" or "you just don't understand them"....honestly, it's like they're begging for that stereotype to be applied
Isabella and merril get a pass because they both don't fit in the description. Neither of their romances worked like creepy self insert fanfic.(I'm looking at you shepard after ME2 fanfic writers......blegh)
