I'm on the fence when it comes to Cole. But, I give him credit for taking on the role of assassin while wearing pointy crocs. That can't be easy.

He's not. Allowing people to romance someone with the mind of a child is too much even for Bioware.

Oh, did they confirm it? I didn't know. Also, I don't think having a child's mind counts, especially when he's not even a child, just a spirit who acts like one.

Does anyone else get the vibe of DC's Scare Crow when he's wearing this hat? I do.

Book Spoilers below!!:

I'll grant you that point about the word 'instinct' and how it is interpreted.  I will say that he would keep on doing what he started in Asunder until he was stopped.  I'll also take to task the general thought that he kills only people who want to be killed.  As far as I know this info comes into play via Coles interatction with the people in question, it also seems that there is no indication that any of them actually tried to kill themselves before interacting with cole and his presence making it very easy for them to say they want to die.  That aspect I always attributed to them being convinced or controlled into wanting to die and cole thus justifying his deeds.

Considering they were newly found mages dragged to the spire and locked alone in cold dark dungeons with the prospect of lifelong imprisonment (at best), I wouldn't say its a stretch that they wanted to die.  As for Cole, he isn't the same at the end of Asunder.  He has much more control over his abilities and actually fights for people and reasons beyond himself.  He isn't going to go around killing people like he did in the Spire just to reaffirm his existence.

Geez, this guy probably has the worst haircut I've seen in a long time. It's like an unholy cross between a mullet and bangs, two horrific haircuts in one!

Bring this man(or kid whatever) a barber!

Though that's not gonna make his face or clothing any better looking I'm afraid...

Thanks. My hair looks like that in real life, just cleaner, fluffier and darker. It makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

Don't play coy with me Dragoon, you know what I am talking about.

Are you talking about terrible fan-fiction from romance fans?  Because I think there's a certain type of fan that can/will write that kind of thing (or latch onto some character) for virtually anything - it has nothing to do with the actual product or even its marketing (and DA is certainly not promoted as a supernatural romance, so that can't be the point, I'd think.)

Oh, did they confirm it? I didn't know. Also, I don't think having a child's mind counts, especially when he's not even a child, just a spirit who acts like one.

DG confirmed that he wasn't an option on twitter (there's a screenshot a couple of pages back) - and said it in such a way that there was a definite "Ew, he's a child" implied in the "No".

The Twilight tangent not withstanding, the Cole character is well conceived, I'll give it that. It seems specifically designed to use the basic human instinct for compassion and empathy to bypass caution and reason. Here is an individual that is scarred by traumatic childhood events that can only find real comfort in sharing the despair of others in their own darkest hours. Compelling. I get it.

But Cole is not a person and it still murdered children for its own gratification. And those traumatic memories do not belong to it, but to the child it has taken up residence within.

Someone mentioned Conner. I spared Conner but not the spirit within him. If it is possible to do the same with Cole, then I would likely do so, however my understanding is the child that was Cole is dead and only the spirit remains.

And this concept of excusing its behavior do to some 'childlike' mental state is rubbish. If it doesn't know it's wrong why does he hide it from Rhys? Why does it hide at all? I was no fan of Lambert, but of his opinion of Cole we are entirely of an accord. It should be put down.

I think for me the biggest sort of...turn off, if you can call it that...is that people seem legitimately to feel that Cole is just adorable. Poor little guy who just needs someone to love him...and it just really, really weirds me the **** out.

Now granted, maybe he'll be less Mary Bell and more misunderstood teen dreamboat when paired with a voice but....

I think he's an interesting character, no offense to DG or anything. I just don't see why people would want to give him cuddles.

As someone who has extensively studied Mary Bell and her case, in what way is Cole at all like Mary Bell? Elaborate, please.

I just really can't grasp the concept of people wanting to 1) romance Cole, 2) think Cole is attractive, 3) think Cole isn't batshit crazy insane, 4) have parental feelings for Cole, or 5) think Cole killed because others wanted to die and so therefore he's not actually a crazy lunatic murderer just a misguided youth trying to do good in a world that's been oh so mean to him.

giphy.gif

I can't understand why anyone wants to romance him. Attractiveness is in the eye of the beholder. I don't think he is batshit crazy but I do feel he is lost. Reading Asunder, looking at his appearance and his quote brings about that instinct from me. No idea if you are a parent but it's an automatic instinct for me. The warden killed people, so did Hawke. I can't seem to remember Cole killing anyone who was completely innocent. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe he did. When did he say the world was so mean to him? People don't remember him, hard to be cruel to someone who can't be seen or remembered. If you don't like him, don't use him. It's really as simple as that.

No offence Demon, but by having it clean, not straitened out and not bleached it already looks a lot better. The only reason why the haircut looks bad is because it's so damn long in the back, which I don't assume your is ;)

"Cole held her close, staring into her eyes. He drank in every moment as the life ebbed out of her. It was an instant that seemed to stretch out into forever...and then she was gone."

This is Cole murdering a little girl. Pages 20 and 21 of Asunder.

You act like she was innocent... She killed her family and she enjoyed it. I had a problem with him killing her until she said that.

Hah! And here I thought that reference would be lost on this forum.

You can relax. I only meant that Mary Bell was also a child that killed people. Nothing further. I wasn't suggesting Cole took pleasure in it- not like Mary Bell did- though I don't think you can prove to me that whatever demon in Cole "mercy killed" all those people didn't enjoy it.

I am thinking of doing a reread of Asunder. DG pointed out that when he wrote the character Cole had the mentality of a child.  I never read him like that.  Perhaps my experience with the rest of the franchise colored my perspective of him but Cole struck me as Merrillesque in his dichotomous existence of Naivete and dangerous entity. His benevolent, innocent yet murderous impulses quite frankly strip him of the right to be viewed through any lens that can be deemed child like. Yet throughout the book Cole matured and developed a moral compass more inclined to match that of his friend Rhys.  Because of this I had been viewing Cole much in the same way I viewed Merrill and was startled when I read DG post.  Because of it I am curious as to whether the fault was in my lack of attention to detail and experiential biases based on previous experience or simply sloppy writing that allowed for such a dramatic misinterpretation of the character of Cole. Cole IMO is a character in need of leadership and guidance, a mentor, this appeals to me because I am one of those players who enjoy having the maternal impulse exploited.  I was particularly attached to Grunt for this very reason in ME2 and 3. It was also why I absolutely adore Merrill and cannot bear to fulfill her personal quest in Act 3 of DA2. I am looking forward to exploring this aspect of Cole's development as well as seeing the direction they take him since he was my favorite character in Asunder.

As for seeing Cole as LI, he seems like a teenager which rules him out unless the Inquisitor is also a teenager or a cougar, neither of which roles appeal to me but I can see the allure for others. You also have to remember kicked puppy is a recurring thematic element in many Bioware romances, this does tend to attract a certain audience and there is no doubt that it is in fact intentional by the developers.

For my part I do want to drown the serial killing little bro in chocolate and cuddles. I hope I do not have to muderknife him

The spirit Cole is not possessing the body of the human Cole. That body was cremated. Cole has only taken the appearance of the human of the same name. This is the first time we have had an actual Fade denizen as a companion rather than one that had to possess a body, living(Wynne, Anders) or dead(Kristoff).

And that perspective is appreciated. Still, it was there to end her life before it knew about what she did. Her being a murderer had no bearing on its purpose.

Cole didn't even realize what he was until Lambert revealed it to him by using the Littany of Adralla. He knew Rhys wouldn't approve but he did end up telling him. He kept his word to Rhys and didn't kill anyone else...with the exception of the Templars. If he killed Lambert it's because of what he did to Rhys. Which means he has feelings, so quit referring to Cole as an it.

"All Cole knows for certain is that the world is full of pain and he must find his place within it. Those who wish to restore order and help the helpless will find him a strange but unwavering ally. Those who use their power for selfish reasons may never see Cole again—if they remember that he was there to begin with" Yeah he is a real evil bastard.

IT certainly realized killing children made it feel better. IT is in the same boat as millions of other people in a world of pain that don't seek to murder others no matter how gratifying or unburdening the act may be. And I will refer to IT, a fictional character mind you,  any way I darn well please.

Not sure what others see in him, but he gives off a... 'foul aura' should we say? I haven't read Asunder, and looking at his design, I know I'm going to be watchful of him and stay out of his way.

I never read Asunder, so Cole has always seemed weird and creepy to me from what I've gathered. I would have rather had a different companion, but maybe the character will surprise me.
