If a North Korean official were to visit the United States, to say that "I don't trust him because he is North Korean", that would be correct.

But is it because:

A.) As a Korean, he is a member of the Mongoloid Race, an Oriental, someone with almond-shaped eyes, etc.?

or

B.) As a North Korean official, he is undoubtedly a member of the Communist Party, which in turn has built itself a reputation of heavy persecution coupled with mass murder/genocide.

'A' would make one a "racist", while 'B' is merely "political distrust".

Same thing with Ashley and her distrust of Garrus; she doesn't trust him because he is a Turian.

But is it because:

A.) As a Turian, he is a reptilian bird-like creature, basically a humanoid velociraptor.

or

B.) As a Turian, he was born and raised in Militaristic hierarchy which didn't exactly start off on the right foot with Mankind; the massacre of a bunch of innocent and unarmed scientists followed shortly by the invasion and occupation of Shanxi has given the Turian people the reputation of "Shoot first, shoot later, shoot some more, and then when everybody's dead, don't even bother trying to ask a question or two, simply jump to conclusions". Not to mention that Garrus is a rogue ex-cop on a military ship.

As for Wrex, hey, he is only a ruthless mercenary who tells you to your face that he would try to kill you if someone paid him the right price. A mercenary on a military ship.

Ashley's distrust is clearly for the latter of these two options, Hence, I say NO, she is NOT a racist!

I'm guessing he made this because the thread was locked.

To be fair, the other one got locked because it was very, very off topic.

For a while, I bet the BSN was wondering whether Ashley was racist against soccer players.

Actually I haven't been on BSN in a while, but I have been reading from other sources a lot of comments about Ashley and the constant accusation that she is a "racist".

Hence why I felt the need to make this thread.

I do not actually know of this "locked thread".

*Clears Throat* Now will you people please get on Topic or leave? Do you agree or disagree?

But in all seriousness I do not think Ashley is a racist.

I'd say she's xenophobic, at least at the outset of the game, and it's annoying, but it's not as if she's actively going out of her way to insult every alien on the ship; she's just sorta quietly xenophobic to herself. It always seems like she's apologetic about it, at least, in a "it's not like I'm prejudiced, but all these aliens really should get off our ship" sort of way. I think her quote "I can't tell the aliens from the animals" sorta seemed to me like she was at least a bit xenophobic to start with. I think she gets over it by the end, though. Especially, if she dies on Virmire and is quoted as saying "human or alien, we're all just animals"… She sorta seems like a less extreme version Navigator Pressly with getting over xenophobic issues in the first game. I could be wrong, that's just the way it seemed to me.

So...whenever someone expresses anxieties or personal feelings/beliefs about a particular subject they are considered racists, xenophobes, etc.?

Nah, she's not xenophobic, if she were, she'd be with Cerberus or hating on Tali. She's just expressing her wariness. That's pretty normal. "I can't tell the animals from the aliens." is a bugged dialogue that was meant to be said towards the keepers.

"I can't tell the aliens from the animals."

I tended to agree with that statement, especially on my very first playthrough, I saw several humanoid velociraptors, a couple of creatures that looked like what you get when you cross an elephant with a gorilla, plus an unexplainable land-dwelling Portuguese man-of-war, etc.

Ashley wouldn't be a racist anyway; it'd be speciesism. Which she is, to some extent, albeit mildly so. Probably made most clear in ME2 when she says "I'm no fan of aliens," but there was ample evidence before then.

Irrelevant. We have to deal with what we have in the game. It's why Conrad Verner apologizes for sticking a gun in your face in ME3 even if you weren't a Renegade, due to another bug in the past.

And even taking the bug into account, it doesn't matter, because the keepers are the only "animals" to which she could be referring; there aren't any others on the Citadel. Hence, she's comparing other sapient aliens directly to animals (even if the keepers are slightly more complex than that).

@OP - people call her racist/speciesist/whateverthehellrocksyourboat more for her personal views/comments that suggested animosity towards aliens for being..alien. not her opinion on Normandy protocol.

Ashley exhibits some speciesism.

She has some speciesist tendencies.

She is not a speciesIST.

Turians look like birds. I'm so speciesist.

To be perfectly frank, if I was standing on the Citadel for the first time, and saw elcor and hanar meandering about, the first thing that would pop into my head was whether or not this was some sort of open safari. Of course, I'd never say so, and I'd probably try to talk to one of them before looking for the petting zoo food dispenser, but still, the thought would be there.

The KEepers are the "animals" But there are several 'aliens" that alos resemble terrestrial animals

Like the hanar, which is teh "big, stupid jellyfish"

The elephant-like elcor

Heck even the volus in their suits look like cybernetic teddy bears.

So, going on appearances only, are Keepers "aliens" or "animals"?
