Here are some thoughts from her writer, Chris L'Etoile, in Mass Effect 1.

I guess the problem is that he gave her lines like "I can't tell the aliens from the animals", so I think he shouldn't be surprised that many people think she's racist. I mean, even if we assume there is some kind of bug...they never fixed it and the average ME player who doesn't frequent the Ashley fan thread here simply doesn't know that the line doesn't work as intented and she's referring to the keepers.

*Shepard and her crew explore the citadel and walk past a group of asari or turians*
Ashley: "I can't tell the aliens from the animals"
What is the casual ME player supposed to think?

Note I said majority, not EVERYONE who hates her.

I have seen a lot of Ashley bashing, and I have seen a lot of people's conversations on BSN and other forums. This is a common trend I have noticed, and I am pointing it out

A majority of the fanbase doesn't hate Ash mate. Haven't you seen all the polls? She's one of the more popular romances.

Eh, Miranda and Kaidan are more popular as human LI's than Ashley is.

I'm a fan of Ashley. But I still think she's "racist" at the beginning.

I still love how Kaidan talks about how all the stairs are symbolic, and Ashley mentions how they'd make for a good defensible position.

Cute, but Kaidan's attraction to Liara doesn't have anything to do with his ability for tact.

So apparently: My post....

No she isn't.

She isn't racist, racism is from the likes of Javik, Wrex and Tali. That is racism. Using objective thinking about another species being aboard the most advanced human vessel, and her thoughts about the council and how useless they are is not racism. Tali ends up taking tech from the Normandy, as the Quarian Fleet somehow has access to stealth drives in ME3, and the council did exactly what she predicted they would in ME3.

Actually, Tali is not only the one she never displays any suspicions towards, there's literally no indication that Tali would have taken any tech from the SR-1... but plenty of indication that she got it from the SR-2, given that she's far more antagonistic towards Cerberus than she is the Alliance. Also, Ashley's prediction was more stupidly obvious than anything, and the Alliance turned out to be completely unable to handle anything on its own and had to call in allies to save it. So... no, she wasn't exactly right, and she always was speciesist. Mildly so, but it still exists.

Not good enough, apparently. Geth don't know about that Spectre master gear. It's superior to their puny pulse rifles.

aren't you an Asari lover? The ones who couldn't  defend their own home world, and decided to rip on alliance air support for not being there, when the Asari literally didnt give two f*cks about Earth? The same government that decided to hide possible knowledge of the reapers and prothean tech from the rest of the galaxy until their own home was burning?

And guess what? Tali still stole tech off a human ship.

Seriously, keep your biased opinions that are full of crap to yourself.

Might I say that tearing into Liara for making a bad joke under enormous stress, after having gone on a rant against people who condemn Ashley based on one (or more than one) line, comes across as being a teensy bit hypocritical? In any case, the asari defended Thessia about as well as Earth was defended, if not better--the Extended Cut shows asari still fighting in the same city that Shepard passed through. And blaming the entire race for a tiny government conspiracy is, well, about as logical as condemning the entire human race because of Hitler.

As for Tali... ohnoes, she stole from a terrorist organization that bombed her flotilla! How deliciously naughty!~

Last I recall, Earth was under siege much longer than Thessia, and yet, when you get back to Earth for the final mission, they're still putting up a good fight. Your argument is invalid. And also, I'm just making a point, a point that is very true and don't give me that joke crap. That wasn't a joke at all.

It was Shepard's ship. Bad enough.

Yes, the Alliance is still putting up a good fight from London's burned-out shell; the city we see in the EC scene appears mostly intact. Obviously, there's a time difference, but there's no indication that the asari did any worse than anyone else except the hyper-militarized turians, and certainly not worse than the humans. And... given the complete absurdity of the statement about air support, for numerous reasons, I thought it was fairly obviously a joke; either that or Liara is so delusional that she thinks the Alliance can spare dedicated air support for defending Thessia, and she shows no signs of that anywhere else in the series.

And the Normandy is TIM's ship, Shepard just commands it. Until ME3, when it's the Alliance's ship.

I think he's saying Tali shows signs of racism, at least against the geth.

And while Tali may have taken the tech from the SR2, it was still tech lifted from the Alliance. (I guess you could say Cerberus stole it first).

Whether the prediction was stupidly obvious or not, she was still right.  Exactly right.

She's not a speciest, she's a nationalist.  She doesn't trust the asari to have the Alliance's best interests in mind any more than she trusts Cerberus.  Or even your average politician.

I don't suppose there's any point in reposting Weekes' refutation of the idea that Tali stole the stealth system. I think it's a fairly obvious development, personally (especially if Shepard encouraged her to do it in ME2 post-Haestrom), but word of god says no.

She wasn't really right. The Alliance would never have been able to handle things on its own, and had to bet everything on their allies staying allies.

I'm also still a little bit confused as to why you're so adamant that she doesn't even have the tiniest amount of speciesism.

Tali must have got the stealth system data from the SR1 as her presence aboard the SR2 is completly optional.

Cerberus were the ones who encouraged the alliance to develop the SR1 with the Turians in the first place. And doubtless, they had their own people in the operation as well. Granted, I don't believe Tali should have taken any information or schematics without my own blessing (which would be denied by me every time). I'd say Tali got the information from the SR1 anyway, seeing as you never have to recruit her in ME2.

Otherwise, you've lost coherency in your argument.

I don't think you understand what nationalism is, and that it can take many different forms and vary in strength from one end to another.

Ashley is a nationalist (I would personally consider her patriotism to be disturbingly abnormal, especially in regards to the alliance), which is juxtaposed next to inherent distrust of politicians and aliens (for which I'd call her a paranoid nutjob who needs a psyche evaluation and a category 6 discharge). She is also a racist, a speciesist. Denial of terms does not undercut their meaning. You're saying that because something is orange, it can not also be round. I am saying that it can indeed be both orange and round.

I don't see where Shepard ever encouraged Tali to do anything in ME2 in regards to technological development (beyond the installation of advanced shields).

The last dialogue option in the post-Haestrom debriefing, before Jacob mentions EDI. Shepard can encourage her to look around.

Tali must have got the stealth system data from the SR1 as her presence aboard the SR2 is completly optional.

That would beg the question of how they got Thanix tech to augment their liveships since the SR1 never had it if Tali was never on the SR2. Hence Weekes saying they got both from the Turian Hierarchy.

But, like I said, I think it makes more sense that it came from Tali, all twitter-canon aside.
