I know I'll probably be attacked for this, but I was wondering if killing regular-looking wild animals is a necessary part of the game?

If other players want to hunt animals for crafting, especially since it's all part of the setting, then sure - go right ahead. But I really haven't enjoyed seeing the scenes of a well-armed player party slaghtering a normal-looking (i.e. not monstrous, corrupted, etc etc) bear and am hoping I can avoid those sort of encounters if/when I play, even it if means missing out on some of the side-quest content.

They do attack you.

Animals attack in other games too, but the player can avoid them or simply run away without any problems. Hopefully the same is true of DA:I?

DAO had you kill bears, I doubt the bear is roaming a big area so most likely he'll attack again. You are slowed during combat as well. So I guess you'll have to kill it eventually.

How a person that hates the slightest violence, even video game violence towards pixilated animals, ends up playing something like DA in the first place is beyond me.

I highly doubt you will be able to avoid it 100% but I doubt you will have to kill every animal in the game. You don't have to participate in the hunting after all.

I guess I'm weird then. Violence towards humanoid enemies doesn't really bother me in video games but something about seeing a wounded animal in a game kind of upsets me.

I think coming out of that Oblivion gate to see my horse's lifeless body traumatized me something fierce.  :(

Yeah I'll slaughter hundreds of nameless mercenaries but...I can't shoot that deer.

I don't think it's any more weird than when I had to get someone else to play the hornet's nest part of Resident Evil, because pixelated wasps scare me but shambling zombie monsters don't.

Hmm...maybe it's because it's something a bit closer to reality?

The odds of your encountering the undead in real life are...rather slim....but wasps are a real legit threat.

Same thing with the deer. I've seen wounded and dead animals in reality but I've never blown a bunch of people up with a cone of cold spell...so a hurt animal hits a bit closer to home and I guess...removes me from the fantasy world of the game for a bit.

You might be able to run away from encounters, but there may be game areas where so-called normal animals are frequent and common enough that avoiding them is unrealistic.

I'd feel better about the rampant bear slaughter if the devs didn't make the goddamn bears so adorable.

270px-Creature-Bear.jpg

That is not a 600-pound pile of fur, claws and murder. That is goddamn Winnie the Pooh waving hello and inviting me to follow him to Christopher Robin's house where we will discuss Taoist philosophy. Silly old bear!

And yes, I acknowledge the dissonance of my desire to only kill "ugly" animals. I'm a bad person. It's in my username.

If you can stomach killing countless people without remorse, but you can't tolerate killing animals, then there is something wrong with you. Oh, and RPGs are probably not for you, most of them involve killing animals.

That said, I hope they force us to slaughter countless animals just to annoy people like yourself.

Humans have free will. No man is born a demon-worshipper, an assassin or a slaver; most of them chose those paths. A bear or a wolf is just a dumb animal obeying its instincts.

As someone who hunts in real life I would love for there to be a rewarding hunting experience in-game. However as someone who likes compromise I will also like for it to be completely optional with no truly game changing rewards. I think making most "normal" animal fights optional is perfectly reasonable as long as I still get the option to slaughter them.

All the animals in Dragon Age: Inquisition are developer-confirmed to have untreatable fade-syphilis from coming into contact with all the Fade Rifts. You're not so much "Killing" them as "Ending their pain/torment"

Do the humane thing and collect their leather.

People actually judge each others quirks here all the time, sadly.
