Will salves help us minimize damage from environmental effects?

I pretty much never used my salves in DA:O and DAII, but with the announcement months ago that sandstorms will happen and cause damage, bogs will slow us down, etc. I would have a newfound appreciation for salves if they could help reduce damage from environmental effects.

I was thinking along the lines of giving everyone a rock salve if we've just fought a tough desert fight, a sandstorm has sprung up, and the nearest camping spot is some distance away... That sort of thing. Especially if health regeneration won't automatically happen, salves could suddenly become every tactical Inquisitor's favourite thing! You probably can't comment on it, but if you can, devs, I'd love to know!

This would have the side effect of giving purpose to the crafting of things that are not potions, which DA has very much struggled with in the past.

Just don't have thousands of expensive and hard to find recipes. I used salves before fighting mages and dragons. It's useful. In DA2 I used a couple when fighting darkspawn and the life-ward potions for elite boss battles.

They cheapened poisons in DA2 though. Poison the way it was implemented in DA2 should have been a rogue-exclusive thing.

Yes, exactly! I used to craft non-potions just to use up ingredients in my inventory, then sell them to help raise money (especially in DA: Awakenings when trying to get enough gold to complete the Cost of Doing Business quest). However, crafting would be much more useful if things like salves help us explore the semi-open-world maps... which I'll be doing a lot of.  :)

It looks like fast travel will be the answer to how to survive the open-world maps with no health regen.  :)  That being said, crafting is shaping up to be pretty cool if you follow the Raptr Q & A today - we'll be able to make heavy armour that mages can wear, if we do things just right, among many other options.

If we've just fought a tough battle in an open-world area, and are a distance away from a safe camp zone where we can heal up, and damaging weather conditions arise, will we be able to use crafted items to minimize damage taken as we struggle to get back to a camp? Or will it just be a matter of hopping on our mount and getting back to our keep ASAP?

Just out of curiosity does the game have scripted or dynamic weather patterns?

Hopefully a dev can answer that for you with some authority. I can only speculate. What I know is that sandstorms are a thing in the desert maps, and my guess is that those would be more dynamic - I expect they might pop up randomly. And I know that movement will be slowed in swamps, so that sounds more scripted, because as long as you are in swampy environment, you will be forced to move more slowly. But I've also read that there will be snow - that may only be in mountainous regions, though, and I don't know whether it will just be continual snowfall to add to the atmosphere of the high altitude area, or whether there might be bad snowstorms that whip up and hamper our movement. I look forward to October to find out! Or maybe in September if BioWare's booth at the Edmonton Expo has some gameplay demos or something. :)

Not sure how you got "romance" out of my thread title, but whatever!  :)
