Hey everybody,

Festor Pot was right.

I gotta tell ya, I pooped a little when I couldn't get to the vault.

Opened my C drive, found the sys 32 file, opened drivers, and then host. Did the edit (notepad), and saved. Clicked on the NWN shortcut, and Urethra, it was the vault !

If an idiot like me can do it, anybody can.

Bless the vault, and all who sail her !

Ed

Ahhh.... the "hosts" file has no extension.  You need to delete the text file you created and edit/save the original system file.  Your browser cannot "see" the version you created.  Notepad should work fine as long as you have your folder and file permissions set and log into PC as administrator.

@Andarian: Thanks for the explanation of how their navigation is set up.  Just a burp then, I guess.

I hate to be a bother, but how do I save it without notepad adding a .txt to the end of it?

I am the admin of the PC but the Windows folder is set to read only and the file permissions are set to special permissions. I can't actually change any of this. I'm using windows 8 and I suppose that is the root of my problem, but is there any way you can help me fix this?

You can either edit with Notepad++ (which doesn't add .txt) or else, after the edit, use Windows Explorer to edit the .txt out of the filename (ignoring the warning about changing extensions).

The fix worked fine for me, though some access methods (e.g. Google, links in Office documents) seemed to require "training", i.e. try it once or twice, get strange messages, try again, get the site, after that it works every time.

Once I figured out how to change permission on my "hosts" file (Even though I am an administrator, it still wouldn't give me access to it until I went to the Security tab and checked marked a couple of boxes), I finally got it to work.

Though should I leave it this way?  Even if it comes back?  And should I now change back the permissions now?

Nice to be able to access the Vault again.  Thanks for the workaround!

IGN = Epic fail.

But we knew this was going to happen sooner or later hence the establishment of the new NWN vault.

Glad people found a work around though. Get uploading everything you can to the new NWN Vault. Moddb's NWN section is also a good place to upload to as well.

So the workaround works for me, as I use Windows XP :P

The basement rats put their filty paws on our nwvault in an attempt to promote that *puke* mmo.

It seems it was no mistake, as the witchervault which runs on the same website code still is accessable.

If it was all vault websites being redirected, then I'd be inclined to believe that someone has made a booboo

OR that IGN is canceling their good old vault network.

However, this is clearly intentional with the possible incoming excuse that it was an accident.

You can modify your hosts file and add this line to it:

69.10.25.55     nwvault.ign.com

That allows me to still connect with a web browser.

FP!

Apparently, IGN doesn't like their server being accessed.  I just got this from my IP, and I have to assume based on the timestamp of it, it was related to IGN.

We are writing to inform you that TELUS has received reports alleging that your TELUS Internet Services account has been used to scan, flood or attempt to gain unauthorized access to another computer, (please see the details of the incident(s) at the end of this e-mail). If you are unaware of this type of activity coming from your account, your computer may be infected with a virus or your computer may have some other security problem which could account for this activity originating on your system. You may wish to inquire with others who may have access to your account and/or change the password to your account to ensure that only authorized users have access to it.

I'm waiting on specific confirmation as to if that's who it was from, but it's best to assume that any connection to their server is being classified as a "DDoS" attack and reported to your IPs as such.

Edit: After forwarding Telus the IGN details, I got a return reply stating the complaint was a result of an "error in their records".  Take that how you will.

So are they going to fix it, kill it, ignore it?

Figures.  My kid had just gotten into PrC, for all the extra classes, and I had just figured out how the whole PrC3.5 - CEP2.4 system works, had found two mods to set up, two, wanted to put up many many more, and then *poof* gone like disco.

I looked through the whole router thing by FP, but that stuff is Greek to me.  I'm just a user.  I was a lawyer, not a software engineer.  Besides it looked a little legal.  Then again, I bought a better modem just for Napster, back in the day.  *evil grin*

When NWConnections died, it was a slow painful death, like cancer, and I know what that is like.  This was more getting hit by a truck.  The paramedics claim they can see a heartbeat, but anyone can see on the road that there's a lot of blood....

Has anyone messaged the IGN admins about the problem (or know who to contact)? They were able to fix it quickly before once they became aware of it.

I messaged the IGN admins about 20 minutes after this thread was created, no response yet.  I also edited out some of the rather inappropriate comments some people left, let's not look like rude children that no one will sympathize with.

(not that I think they're causally related, but just in case people wondered)

Um... What the heck is everyone talking about? Either IGN fixed something or I don't know what's going on. I haven't modified my hosts file recently, but I saw this thread, went to the old vault (nwvault.ign.com) and it was there. I did a search for a module and it worked fine. Ditto for a custom object. The list of Hall of Fame modules, etc. is there and so on. As far as I can tell, the old Vault is in the same condition it was the last time I checked it, a week or two ago.

Anyway, I am not saying there wasn't a problem over the past day or so. So many people experienced it that no doubt something happened. But, possibly IGN has dealt with the issue? I am just saying that the Vault is apparently working as it has been and people might want try going there normally before trying to add entries into their hosts file and so on.

Maybe the DNS change hasn't propagated to you, yet, Zork. But the vault is down. Looks like a 301 redirect is mapping the traffic (and all the vaults old incoming links) to the Neverwinter Online wiki page.

Or perhaps you have already modified your host file. It's the same fix we used last time the vault went down.

So, are all the files from the old vault backed up, or will tons of stuff be lost forever?

As of now (10:42 CEST) the old nwvault.ign.com works again.

Edit: (10:49 CEST): No, it does not. I don't know why the first call of nwvault.ign.com worked, afterwards it sent me to the Neverwinter wiki page as everyone else has reported. Modifying /etc/hosts works for me, too.

Rolo Kipp tells us that the old files are backed up, but most are not yet transferred to the new Vault at neverwintervault.org.

Urgent requests can be made in the NWN1 files wanted thread.

Even better, you can PM Rolo to volunteer your help with this. Alternatively, if you have your own priorities, do some transfers manually by copying stuff from the old vault, logging what you've done in that thread, so it can be tidied up.

It's a huge amount of work, but if more community members joined in, we could easily shift the more popular stuff.

Whether nwvault is back or not, I'd say the time has come to put our shoulders to the wheel.

Sounds like it's permanent this time. The URL does redirect to the Wiki for NWN that IGN has set up after-all. I guess all we can do is retrieve everything we can and post it on the new vault.

It's still working for me. I was able to download files and post on the forum. Festor Pots fix is valid. I had to go to eHow just to learn how to edit my host file. You all can cut and run, but me, if they want me to leave the vault, they're going to have to throw me out !

You can tell IGN that I have been thrown out of better places than this.

The main issue is that for about 2 weeks we (me and sensei Rolo) were unable to access admin panel so no new submissions can be approved or even viewed :(

I like your talk but it will only be valid for so long. Besides, even if the work-around lasts, NWN Vault is currently gone and there needs to be a new place where mods and content can be uploaded as the old vault can no longer be used for uploading content.

It looks like exactly the same server configuration error that caused the last Vault outage. Has anyone messaged the IGN admins about the problem (or know who to contact)? They were able to fix it quickly before once they became aware of it.

I have a contact at IGN who I've worked with to help clear up issues with the Vault (and the Vault Network, sometimes) before and who I wrote to, today, about the issue.  When I hear something solid back from them, I'll pass it on.  I've spent a decent amount of time crawling around the whole of the Vault Network in the past and I'm 50/50 on whether this particular change was intentional (which is what it sort of looks like) or whether it was the result of some technical issue.

I think he already knew about that judging by his first post in the thread.

So long live the new NWN Vault

Is it possible to host a public FTP file server or something like that with all the old vault files? A lot of vault entries are not cached and therefore the download link cannot be accessed.

Perhaps I'm doing it wrong. I messed with host files before and I simply can't get it to work. Does adding the line let you go onto nwvault as if nothing happened, or does it just let you download from the download link at the vault entry? I saved the changes and restarted my browser but it did not work.
