Big Wig Game Publisher: So we've been thinking... The vault has been keeping a lot of old games alive by radically increasing their replayability.
IGN Editor: YEAH!
Big Wig Game Publisher: So we were thinking... time spent playing old games is time not being spent buying and playing new games.
IGN Editor: Yeah?
Big Wig Game Publisher: So we were thinking... Maybe you could shut down the vault?
IGN Editor: Yeah.
Big Wig Game Publisher: Good boy. Did I mention we are going to have advance copies of Halo 5 and Witcher 3 in next years comic con press packet?
IGN Editor: YEAH!
Where to get Modules now?

Nice one. That had me laughing, Urk. :-)
You should be careful, though. This is the Internet, and for every person who sees your post as lighthearted humor, there will be someone who actually believes that the Vault is disappearing because of some sinister, backroom conspiracy between IGN and a mustache-twirling Big Gaming® executive. MUHAHAHA! Sad but true. There are people who will really believe that the giant gaming companies are very threatened by our downloading mods for our decade-plus old game. ![]()

I guess there is no doubt that IGN lied and the old vault is gone and will not be back. Good thing we have the new vault. I will have nothing to do with IGN in the future. I would have been ok with the vault being closed with notice but to close it with no notice and to then lie about it is inexcusible.

Yah, conspinkeys are just figments in the minds of overimaginative nutters, right?
Greed + OCD = behavior that is extremely irrational. Just sayin'.
Anyway, 'tis a blessing that some old diehards were around to save the day. Thank you very, very much!

Preface: I'm posting this mainly for informational purposes, and not to take bets on whether anything will actually come of it. I also strongly support the New Neverwinter Vault, for reasons too numerous to name. But I also think it would be valuable for other reasons if IGN's Neverwinter Vault were to return, not the least of which would be the restoration of the comment and review history on so many modules and other works -- which is otherwise now lost forever.
That's one of the reasons why I've been "poking" IGN's management every few months on whether the IGN Vault -- which still showing an "undergoing maintenance" page -- will ever be restored. My plan was to continue doing so until they either said "No, it's not coming back," or "Yes, it's up now," and I saw a corresponding change in the landing page. On that point, here's a link to my last Twitter exchange with Talmidge Blevins:
Andarian: Any news on restoration of the Neverwinter Vault?
Talmidge Blevins: Now that 1Up has been restored, it's what the engineers are currently working on.
Unlike the previous responses, this one said that their engineers are actually now actively working on it.
Given that IGN's NWN Vault went down nearly a year ago, there's good reason to be skeptical. But if they have only a small engineering staff to dedicate to the effort, and if that staff has been busy cleaning up other messes from last year's (at least partly botched) migration effort, then it's possible that the old Vault might eventually come back online. As I said, I'm not taking bets, but I thought I should mention this news for the record.

its a twitter exchange between Andarian and people at IGN.
I'm surprised IGN is bothering to get the old vault back up. Do we even need it any more?

Sure we do, but not as much as before. The return of the old vault should fix a lot of broken links.

Even crackpot reviews like "This module gets a 2/10 because a priest of Torm would never send an adventurer on an assassination mission!" can be useful to read, whether or not I agree with the evaluation.
To be clear, I love NeverwinterVault.org. But, many times I go to check out a module I haven't played and have to hunt around for basic information like whether it's single-player or multiplayer and what levels characters should start at and expect to finish at. That's important stuff and I'm not likely to start a module until I know it.

I'm surprised IGN is bothering to get the old vault back up.
I think the indications were there all along that IGN was trying to update, repair, and migrate the Old Vault as part of a larger site maintenance operation. From what I've been able to gather the IT staff botched the job on some of them, and have been slowly trying to clean up the resulting mess since. My tweets at the IGN execs were based on the assumption that they never wanted to shut down the Vault, and that a little periodic prodding would help them remember to keep it on the list of botched migrations to eventually resolve.

Potentially, there is a lot of information on the IGN Vault that is not on the Neverwinter Vault. Or, at least, information that isn't readily apparent by default on the project pages on the new vault. I am thinking of module description information (what levels, classes, hours to play, etc.), reviews of many modules, comments and helpful fixes/suggestions/workarounds from players (some of which were quite detailed), and so on.
I agree. The loss of historical information in the comments and reviews by itself is a tragedy. Without restoration of the IGN Vault, that is now lost forever.
