<praying to holy moly...>

Heh. Asleep? :-P
Busier than a cat on a mouse farm :-P

Don't worry too much about multiple copies for uploads, we can always sort them out.
But I would ask that people coordinate just a *holds two fingers up, close together* little ;-)
I've created two new forums on the Vault, for NwN1 & NwN2.
If you are looking for a file or project, or merely wish to upload one, post it there so we cut back on duplication.

The back up we have is a web scrape of the old Vault that was current up to last July (when ign took steps to block our scraper). It included files, images, comments and the html of the project page (which included the vote *summary*).
These are stored in individual folders under the old vault categories.

We do not yet have an automated way of uploading these projects, though we have *most* of the Vault Storage System written, thanks to Pain of Dungeon Eternal. It's that last bit that I'm not good enough to finish ;-(

To sum up, we *do* have most of the projects saved. We *can* find those projects when they are requested, though it may take a bit to search and upload. And please do help us restore projects to the Vault.

We have some great folks helping out on the admin side and we are building this site for *us*. Our *personal* Vault. Yours, mine and ours ;-)

<...mother of magic>

So, if we have our own copies of content, should we upload them (first checking for duplication), or should we request your team to load your archive copy?

Problem with the first option is that we have the files, but not the description or screenshots.

Sorry if I'm being thick.

<staying the course...>

If the project is not up at all and you think it should be, upload what you have and post on the NwN1 Wanted Files forum that you've uploaded a partial migration.

My personal opinion is that if someone wants it enough to upload what they have, I'll go looking for the rest of it (when I have time) and finish the migration. This is the best crowd-sourcing method I can think of to prioritize the migration.

Coordination is the key there, though... so *do* post in the Wanted Files forum :-)

Personally, again, I work out of Starbucks on a puny little wireless hookup. Uploading the 500gigs on miniVault is pretty much not something I want to spend the next 6 weeks doing :-P

But give me a base to work from and I (and other admins raring to go) will flesh out what you guys start.

None of this is perfect, and we're doing the Marine thing (Adapt, improvise, overcome!) as we go, but we can do this :-)

I'm already seeing duplicates. Kamiryn's Customer Character Override Hak was just uploaded a few hours ago, but it was also just uploaded six weeks ago.

As Kamiryn is active, I've changed the owner of the previous upload to Kamiryn, so he can decide what to keep/let go :-)

Thanks (Dunahan did get the 5 Vk migration bounty, though :-)

Rolo, you said you had four copies of old vault sitting on backups and dependent on Starbucks wireless. Perhaps send a copy to someone with a hardline for uploading?

Let them out of my greedy little hands?! Bu-bu-but...

*hangs head*

Yeah, been thinking about this, actually.

I *do* have a spare external...

But who out there would commit to working on this? I mean *seriously* spending an hour or two every day (or a big chunk of their weekend) on uploading this stuff?

Besides me? ;-/

I have a lot of friends here, but those capable don't have the time. Those with the time aren't all willing or dedicated enough.

If there are applicants for the job, PM me and we'll talk.

Approximately how much data is it total?

<nesting...>

The amount of data is only part of it (a bit less than 500gb).

The biggest um, chore, is that there are close to 40,000 different projects, each in their own folder.

In HakPaks, as the grossest example, there are 7,299 folders

Lol, ouch.

I was asking first about the pure amount of data because it seems like a good idea to eventually have a couple backups spread across multiple people in the long term.

In the meantime, I'll do what I can to move stuff to the new Vault. Right now I'm working on moving over as many portrait packs as possible, starting with the higher rated ones and moving down, and adding preview pictures when lacking.

As a way of organizing our efforts, I am attempting to extract the URLs from each of the 40k projects.  I will then create a webpage that links to each project, along with a check box that people can check when they transfer the necessary data from that project to the new vault.  That way we won't be duplicating other people's work, and anyone can pitch in to help complete this rather daunting task.

Barring some automated process, this is the only way this will ever be completed--a community project to preserve the future of NWN.

Edit: It should take me about 10 hours to capture all of the HTML from the old vault.  I can possibly have this ready sometime next week.

The wayback machine seems to be useless for me. I tried to download 3 or 4 texture sets and 2 scripts. I could visit the submission page via the listings but the files are nowhere to be found... so i have the feeling that it is "nice" to see all the great stuff but we cant get the files anymore. Anyone had a better experience today?

Man i cant tell you how .... i realy are now that the vault is gone. Makes no sense to be angry at all or worse but anyway it´s so uncool... it cant get any uncooler!

Still seems to be working for me with the ip address workaround. Heh, we'll see how long it lasts though.

Witchy-poo, you can also just list the things you're looking for on the NwN1 Wanted Files forum and I'll go digging for them...

That's how I decide what projects should be migrated next - need and desire ;-)

For Tools and Tutorials i started placeholders till full entries can be made (and to avoid spamming the new vault with 100s of minor additions)

So at least for now a few of the more popular tools and tutorials are available for dl to everyone again :)

I've also been bundling old entries together, if they are different versions, or have add-ons, etc, merging the descriptions as is appropriate,
so in cases of Mil-Bloodsong Tailors, and Tilesets like Aztec or RL Gothic Sets, for example, hosting all add-ons and versions for compatibility.

Since the new vault allows far fewer file types, i have also just bundled erfs, haks, mods, pdfs and other "raw" files into 7z or Zip packages.

As far as old vault entries go, i am trying to treat them with all the respect and reverence they deserve, while hopefully still keeping intact too.
(At least as much as possible, sometimes minus a screenie or two here-and-there at times, as I'm just manually downloading from old vault...)

If there's anything from the last 6-12 months that we're concerned about losing, it would be a good idea to mention them, and those of us with free time can move them over to the new Vault.

First off I'd like to thank Rolo and all the others who are making this backup possible. I just learned of the old vault's fate and I'm still shocked, even more so considering how it was done with apparently no prior notice (went last week and didn't see anything). That site was part of my life for so many years, I almost feel like my basement was lost to a fire.

Now a question: I had backed up some of my favourite modules over the years and I'd be happy to upload them if it can help a bit. What I'm wondering though is how we handle haks and other custom content? For simplicity's sake, what I usually did was to download a module and all required haks, tilesets, music, etc. and put them in a single folder, but the module author was often not the same as the hak/tileset author. Should everything be uploaded under a single project? I'm afraid things will end up becoming a big headache otherwise, but I want to give credit where it's due and I'm afraid I won't be able to track down exactly who made what.

When you add a new Project to the new Vault, at the bottom is the option to link to other Projects by url. I think that's the preferred way of separating things out, so that we don't have tons of duplicate files flying around. Correct me if I'm wrong about that though guys.

How about checking http://nwvault.ign.com/ with news and or each category updated/new? If you made a list you could throw it here: nwn1-files-wanted and here: nwn2-files-wanted  or migrate them yourself :)

@DarthMuffin: try hosts workaround. Ugly, but works. Ugly because one has to know about it to try it, right?

I actually just finished migrating pretty much all the portraits under the New category in the old Vault. I'll take a look at the other resources next. ;)

I was going to restore the few files I had posted to the old Vault, but I can't remember any of the stuff like the old Vault ID or even how I listed myself as the author. I don't really want to mess with my hosts file to look it up. Can I just re-upload it with an explanation of what it was on the old Vault in the description?

<passing his surprisingly deep...>

*shrug* Why not?

Push the stuff (that's yours) and we'll try and sort it out.

Just document whatever you can remember to help us...
