Have you decided on a point in the game where you'll overcome your xenophobia? (I'm assuming here you're metagaming)
I didn't on my xenophobic run. I expected to take Kaidan and Ashley all the way till the end.
Virmire forced me to make use of the aliens and their power. Liara never left the squad again
I figure on doing Feros -> Therum -> Virmire. During Virmire Shepard has to use Aliens on the squad and it is at that point that I figure her attitude will change.
I sent Ashley with Kirrahe. There I was forced to pick one of the aliens so I chose Garrus to accompany me with Kaidan. Garrus being most alike Ashley (Wrex was already dead).
Kaidan stayed with the bomb, meaning I had to take another alien. That's where TianShi discovered the immense power of Liara. She never left his side again on missions.

TianShi's story partially inspired the story I going to tell for Morwen, in particular the all-human squad idea.

Do note that xenophobia and racism are very different things. Not sure what your point was.
Just an update on how the story has progressed so far.
Wrex gave us info about Fist in exchange for Shepard agreeing to let him tag along. Shepard tentatively agreed, but didn't go so far as to include him in the squad. So far Shepard has stuck to using Ashley and Kaidan.
Next, after rescuing Tali, Udina ordered Shepard to take her along. Then Garrus stopped us by the elevator on the way to the Normandy and asked to come along, but Shepard turned him down. So Shepard ended up with two aliens on the ship, though no one ever seems to notice the Quarian gathering all of our technical secrets in engineering. I suspect she has a cloaking device. That or mind control. The only alien Ashley and Admiral Mikhailovich ever mention is Wrex.
We then headed to Feros, stopping by Terra Nova as we jumped from one relay to the next and uncovered a Batarian plot to destroy the colony. We stopped that and killed all the Batarians involved.
On Feros we stopped the Geth, killed the Thorian, got the Cipher, and saved the colony. Shepard decided to spare Shiala. While Shepard may be distrustful of aliens, she is not a murderer, and Shiala's story about being mind-controlled by Saren evoked a degree of sympathy.
Shepard established a tentative connection with Wrex by talking about how they had a common enemy in the Turians.
Then it was off to the Artemis Tau Cluster to search for Matriarch Benezia's daughter who we rescued from the Geth.
In the post mission debrief Liara mind-melded with Shepard which left its traces on her, though she told Ashley she wasn't sure she could trust the Asari yet. She also talked with Wrex who told Shepard about his family armor being held by some Turian. Shepard felt retrieving Wrex's armor from some Turian was something she could get on board with. She even decided that she would let Wrex come along on that mission since he asked. That will be her first mission with an alien. I also felt the dialogue would work better on Virmire by going with the "family armor" route rather than the charm/intimidate route. The "family armor" route is less confrontational and therefore xenophobic Shepard has less motivation to just up and kill Wrex.
The post-Therum episode is still uploading. Next will be doing some side-quests, including Luna and Family Armor, then it is off to Virmire, unless I find some way to fit in the Cerberus stuff first. Otherwise, the Cerberus stuff will come after Virmire.
