Honestly, I'm getting a bit tired of the mage companions being the ones who do the most morally questionable stuff (Morrigan and Anders and Merrill). It's just become so predictable now, all of us keeping our eye on the mages all the time as if we don't do that enough outside of the party. If it was a non-mage party member that betrayed us in some way, that would be more exciting. Can we just have some relatively normal mages in our party for once?

Good point!  I hadn't thought about that.  Now that you bring it up, I sure hope they take it in another direction.  Thanks <3

Ah, yes that might be helpful. I'm starting to realize how frustrating this whole forum must be for people who haven't read the book yet! (I haven't but I spoiled myself anyways).

Yeah. I'm sorry if I sound like a pain. I was restricting myself to the twitter thread but then this thread kept growing and I couldn't help myself. :P Believe me, if I could have gotten the book the first day it came out I would have. But regional restrictions on Kindle books are evil things.

Haha I'm not saying I wouldn't enjoy it if it was done well or that I would hate Solas for it (I still like Anders), it's just that it would definitely be a case of "oh, here we go again" rather than an exciting twist.

You make a good point. Though I never felt betrayed by Morrigan, I know a lot of people did. I also never romanced Anders (well I started, but dumped him) and my objections to what Merrill was doing tended to be overruled by my feeling that it wasn't my job to control her life. But it would be nice if the stereotypical nice guy character (like Alistair) did something horrible. Other than dump mages and elves, that is. :P

I actually have never felt betrayed by any of the characters! People say Anders betrays you but it was completely obvious that he was up to something and he pretty much outright admits it to you if you push him a little more. Mages do have the most morally questionable actions, though, at least compared to other characters (Morrigan's God Child scheme, etc).

I just don't want  to see Solas go down such a predictable path, considering he's more connected with the Fade than other companions we've had and thus closer to danger.

I hope he's the one that everyone expects to do something really bad but, as it turns out, he doesn't! I really hope that "Fade expert" means "Yeah I know how much I should NOT deal with demons, moreso than other mages".

Very much agreed.

And dammit, your post you made as I was posting this post just ninja'd me! I was about to say it'd be a really nice twist if everyone suspected him of shadiness, but you remain calm and nice to him (possibly being the lead-in to a romance, if he's a LI) and it turns out he's a nice, good guy all along.

That would be nice, especially given the anti-elf and anti-mage sentiment a lot of the gameworld characters have. He's got that double wammy going right out of the box, after all.

I don't suppose I was betrayed by Anders, I refused to help him when he wouldn't tell me what he was doing (and I suspected he was making a bomb from the ingredients). But the way he acted towards my refusal really irked me and when I found out he killed Elthina (I liked her) I wanted to punch him. So... perhaps not so much betrayal as being a horrible friend. ;)

But I do hope Solas is like Morrigan in regards to how he is in the fade, Morrigan had complete awareness of where she was and what she was dealing with. If Solas has that sort of awareness and is competent, there is no reason to also have him be someone who feels like he is all knowing and makes pacts with demons. Everyone in DA2 was very extreme in one way or another. It would be nice to have someone who is intelligent and isn't focused on a cause (or vendetta) over all else. Which is why I liked Elthina, she was the only one I felt wasn't taking sides. Which coincidentally was why everyone seemed to hate her. But if Solas is like Morrigan crossed with Elthina I would be happy.

Elthina bugged me because she seemed to plug her ears and wait for the Maker to handle it when she was in a position to do at least something buuut I will stop there because this isn't the thread for it. Either way, it doesn't seem like there's any choice but to act in DAI, since the stuff has already hit the fan. Hoping for everyone else to stop and compromise doesn't seem to be the m.o. of the Inquisition.

I hope Solas is not wishy washy and is strong in his beliefs and his actions but does what is logical and actually does some good with it and helps. I want him to get angry if the Inquisitor does something that contradicts what he thinks should be done. More than that, I think it would be cool if he was actually full on RIGHT about it and your Inquisitor suffers in some way for not following his advice.

I mean, this isn't like DA2 where our companions could cause some of the chaos; Thedas is already in complete disarray at the start of DAI so I can't imagine our companions could make it any worse. Here's hoping they actually all help make it better, in some way. Especially Solas, who seems to have knowledge the Inquisitor will need when it comes to the Fade rifts

OK there is some difficulty in answering this, because your view and my view of Elthina are completely different so I think it has skewed your view on what I meant when I said I hoped Solas was a bit like her. Without getting too much into the whole Elthina thing, what I meant was that I hoped as a character he would see the bigger picture and not choose sides because doing so would only antagonize one or the other and there are much more important things going on. I assume there is going to be an element of that in the game no matter what, but I would like a moderate character who can understand why I'm not going to play favourites unless forced.

Sorry I am late on this but...

Oh My GOD all of these are Amazing! Thank you for posting them. :D

Plus I really really hope that Solas is not used as some tool to tick us off later in the game...like Anders. :(

I also wonder if its going to be gory and there will be blood all over our companions after battles like in the other games? Hmmm

I think we both just think of different things when we think of the term "like Elthina". When I think of her, I think of "neutral to the point of uselessness when she could be doing something useful and ignoring obvious suffering to stay neutral" but you think of someone moderate who refuses to go to extremes and tries to not make irrational, emotion-based decisions, which she also is. I do hope Solas is the latter but certainly not the former. So I guess I hope he's semi-Elthina-ish.

Well I don't think she made emotionless decisions, but the rest of that I can agree with. :) Elthina was Kirkwall's mother, mothers shouldn't show favouritism. So ultimately I hope Solas is smart enough to not be one of those "But you're a mage/elf/etc. you have to side with us!" type of characters.

To be fair, Elthina's neutrality is easier and more fitting for her considering she isn't part of the oppressed group. It wouldn't quite fit someone like Solas unless he was more of a cold, 'I don't care about my people' type. I would think he'd have some degree of loyalty to mages or elves and could be more of a pro-rebellion party to counter Vivienne. I think it would be really strange if he was just like "do what you want to mages and elves, I don't care" or didn't suggest that a mage or elf Inquisitor should have some kind of loyalty to their people.

What I don't want is for that to go to the ultra mega extreme like what was so common in DA2!

That's fair. I guess I am a bit caught up in the idea of him living in isolation and being intelligent enough to be an expert. If that were the case, I'd see his main focus being the problem at hand and him not being too invested in either cause. Like a mellower version of Morrigan. But that is of course speculation based on speculation. :P

Just because he's intelligent doesn't mean he'd just accept the plight of his people or an Inquisitor doing something uncalled for to a mage or elf, but I also hope that he realizes the bigger picture and doesn't get caught up in those causes. Which I expect a lot of our companions will do considering the severity of the main problem!

Morrigan just didn't really care about anyone, save for the Warden if you become her friend or her lover. I love Morrigan but I don't really want Solas to follow that same trope completely, though I hope he's more of a "we need to fix these Fade rifts" guy than a "MAGES. MAGE PLIGHT" guy.

Could you guys please use spoiler tags for TME content? I thought this thread was safe, but apparently not.

Sorry if I spoiled anything for you.  I didn't think I did, because I was avoiding any specific information (as in what exactly I was saying those characters were like) except under spoiler tags.TME is a decent read, if rather short, though, so hopefully you have a chance to read it soon.

Hm.  I guess this will need a spoiler tag, but regarding the topic at hand and TME:

Spoiler

Having said all of that, I will throw my hat in with the "can't we have a mage who's not up to something sneaky for once?" crowd.  I'd love it if despite being an apostate and involved in ongoing events whether he wants to be or not, he turns out to be a decent guy with no nefarious plans.

But, this is Bioware, and they seem kind of bent on making us hate the mages... So while I can hope, I won't hold my breath.  I'd probably suffocate between now and DA:I's release date if I did that, anyway.
