If it's true I'm going to make you something amazing as a reward for your incredible clairvoyant talents. Seriously, maybe a... plate of cookies, quilt, sword... something like that.
The thing is? While there are good reasons to believe that no ancient elves survived, at the same time there's no real reason to assume that none of them could have. Even if Solas isn't one, that's not to say that there is not or has not been one, or that we won't eventually run into one.
It's kind of like griffins--the writers tell us that this thing existed and happened, and hint at how awesome it was, and they KNOW we are drooling for more information. Eventually they will use that to their benefit. We'll either learn more information and be sad at what can never be, or we'll run into the awesomeness we already know about and be like: Eeeeeee! That is so cool!
An ancient Solas huh...? well brass buckles, that would explain why he'll be awkward as they say :0 hmm..and I'm beginning to look at his clothing moar to see if they look outdated or something that belongs in the past xD but, to no avail!
I had a really weird thought. What if Solas isn't from the Circle OR the Dales OR Tevinter/Nevarra? What if we come to find out he's ancient and has been wakened out of uthenara? Yeah, I know, horribly unlikely, but with the Veil Tears, who knows what's possible? And any elf who's basically been living in the Fade for so long has a good chance of being an expert of the Fade. It's not a theory I believe to be correct, but it would be interesting if it were. Sort of like Javik, except he'd have known more of what was going on. But, if he were such an ancient being, I can guarantee you that would bump him right out of the romance option lineup.
Let me add my voice to the chorus of this would rock.
I also don't think it's entirely improbable, given Sandal's prophecy.
I hope Solas isn't the 'last of his kind' deal like Javik was. I mean it would be awesome to get direct information about elven history/culture and such, but I just dunno, sounds too silly that the pc would find him and he'd want to help the inquisition.
I somehow doubt he'd be anything like Javik, even if he were awakened from uthenara. For one thing, Bioware doesn't re-use personalities that close together, if at all. For another, Javik was basically dead (that's pretty much what cryostasis is, you're frozen and you're not conscious of anything), whereas an elf in uthenara may be in a sort of deathlike sleep, but they are fully conscious in the Fade. They can watch over the world, they can respond to people's requests for aid, etc. Javik wasn't conscious. Anything after being put into cryogenic sleep, he has forgotten. That would make a big difference between the two in experience alone, and nevermind personality--since I'm reasonably sure that Solas would not have been put into uthenara due to dire need.
It would make sense for a surviving ancient elf to take note of the Veil Tear and awaken to help deal with the fallout.
But that said, the theory is highly unlikely, for a variety of reasons.

Mostly, it's implied very strongly that the only elves to enter uthenara were nobility. While that would explain Solas's pride--and if he's taller than normal it'd possibly explain that as well, due to there being hints that elves used to be taller--his manner of dress doesn't reflect anything noble. To be sure, if he woke from eternal slumber, his clothing might have become tatters by that point and elves not being highly regarded in general, he wouldn't have been able to dress any better. In any case, I strongly suspect that only the elven nobility actually had eternal life, even if all elves had magic. Solas doesn't strike me as nobility, but then again we don't know much about him yet.
So yeah, it's just a wild theory and I don't think it is actually true. Just something I tossed out there that I thought would make for an interesting character.
If this is the case, he might have been living wild for some time.
So when do you guys think we might see more of Solas? We have two more Fridays in April and I SO hope he's the Follower Friday companion! I'm also hoping that we can see the character kit before then, like we did with Vivienne.

Indeed. I think the character kit might come along with the announcement of whoever FF is following, then we get the bulk of their info the following week.

What an Amazing theory...if it is close to your speculation though..*whispers* I hope he is romanceable.
Being in the fade for a long time can be very lonesome even though there are spirits, demons and people passing through the fade from time to time.

First off, great art there!
Second... Seems like people are taking that silly theory too seriously. I really, truly doubt it would be true. Just a little fun thing to come up with to keep conversation going, I guess?

Also don't know how this happened:

Haha! That's so adorable, I want to pinch his embarrassed cheeks XD
I have been eagerly awaiting for an appropriate moment to drop this gem:
somewhere in the Fade…
SOLAS: I have been wondering… VARRIC: Mm? SOLAS: What’s it like to be covered in all that hair? Must be very warm. VARRIC: Toasty as a bearskin rug beside a crackling tavern hearth. SOLAS: It sounds dreadful. VARRIC: Funny. You know, I’ve never once found myself pondering what it’d be like to be bald as a nug’s ass.
(a tremendous ZAP! skitters across the party. Varric is now hairless, while Solas displays a luxurious head of hair and a chest full of curls.)
VARRIC: *running a hand over his exposed scalp, looking worriedly down at his now-smooth chest* It’s not half bad. A little chilly, but… SOLAS: Andraste’s blighted eyeballs! *trying desperately not to scratch himself raw through the crotch of his pants*
OMG I totally hope something like this is a party banter (not the actual switching of hair, but talking about it with each other) That would make my day
Karm delivers!
Solas as Thedas' coppertone girl, semi confirmed rumor! This is so funny and I love his facial expression and the dog and the "happy bark"
I actually finished drawing something! Not much face detail for Solas, but my attention was, uh, elsewhere
Edit: Also, I don't do backgrounds. The end.
What face? I mean um...very nice. Very very nice.
I really hope this isn't too big. I have stayed up all night doing this. Serves me right for trying to get back into art after so long. And I realized after I posted it that it isn't even finished... bad Brass. No cookie.
It's not as good as some of the rest people have posted, so you'll have to forgive me for that. My anatomy skills are lacking, for sure.
Also I don't know why he's sad, but I'm sure he won't object to a hug or two.
This is gorgeous! I love your use of color and attention to detail! Don't sell yourself short, 'cause you've got mad skillz

I think Solas is probably going to be this months Follower Friday, since he has the most information out so far of the remaining companions. Are you guys thinking it's likely?
It's so nice it needs to be posted twice! If only we could post every awesome piece of fanart on every page.

We're thinking it's likely! They seem to be setting up for an elf character, what with all the screenshots of the Dales!

It was supposed to be someone new, but with the announcement of Cullen as a romance possibility within the time frame of the hint we were maybe going to get, I wonder if they will be announcing Cullen as a companion instead.

I'd rather learn more about Solas.
Me too! I'll be happy for Cullenites if they confirm Cullen as a companion but we already know Cullen. I'd rather it be someone new, whether that's Solas or not!

Honestly, I don't see Cullen being a companion, at this point. I think we have too many warriors with more evidence of being companions. So, I think Cullen is probably an NPC romance. If he's not, it has to mean Iron Bull or grey warden is out.
I think Solas is likely because of the Dales being the main focus this month, like was said, and him having so much more information out than everyone else. But we'll see, maybe Cullen will surprise us. Haha.

I'd be happy for the Cullen fans if he were confirmed, but I'd also be sorely disappointed, because it means 3/3/3 is false, and also because it would mean Cole has no chance of being a companion in the game (since it would most likely be 4 warriors, 2 rogues and 3 mages in that case).
But yes, Solas!
You know, if he did turn out to be an ancient elf (and again I doubt it, but I'll roll with the theory since I came up with it), it would explain his lack of face tattoos. And if he weren't romanceable, I'd be okay with that as long as they made sure he was interesting, just as I'm eager to have Cole on board even though I have no interest in romancing a man with the mind of a child.
The more likely theory on Solas, though, is that he's a Circle escapee, or someone who was raised in the wilds, not necessarily Dalish. From the fur, I think it's fair to guess that he'll hail from Ferelden. He does not look Orlesian to me. Even their peasants are obsessed with fashion, and Orlesians prefer feathers to fur.
Solas could also easily be what happens to city elves who go in search of the Dalish and are turned away. What if he discovered his magic, and rather than be taken by the scary templars, he left the city and sought out the Dalish? And then they had no use for him, so... he had to make his own way.
Or, he could have some connection to the Asunder mages. If he's one of their better mages, then he might be sent to join the Inquisition. Technically he would be an apostate, even though he's with mages who were previously part of the various Circles in Orlais.
I won't argue against the point that his being an ancient elven mage would be very interesting. But again, I doubt he'd be romanceable. He'd become our mentor, and those who say he's lonely... well, the Fade is full of spirits. They aren't human, of course, but that doesn't mean he would have been without good company. It would definitely explain what we know about him having a quirky/awkward personality... but then again, so would lack of human/elven contact for a long time, even if he were just a standard elf.
And a TME spoiler:
Spoiler
Honestly, I kind of wondered if Felassen were an ancient elf. He knew so much about ancient elves, I'd even argue TOO much--more than the Dalish who struggled to acquire that same information. He even knew what kinds of herbs to take to send him to the Fade, without using lyrium or even apparently being a Dreamer. And what kind of elf would identify with Fen'Harel, whom they all want to turn away? There was even a point where I suspected he might BE Fen'Harel.
In any case... if Felassen might have been ancient, or had access to information no one else seemed to, there's nothing keeping Solas from having access to the same information. And part of me still wonders if, despite lacking the facial tattoos and what happened to him in the end, Felassen might end up being Solas. But, not only does Felassen have tattoos, but he's also apparently pretty old--likely in appearance as well as years, though we're never precisely told what he looks like, other than having tattoos.
Anyway, long spoiler short... if Felassen were ancient, then Solas might be, too.
I hadn't even heard the "ancient elf" theory yet. That would be amazing. I should have been following this thread more closely! Haha.
I've been thinking he would probably end up being a Dalish that got separated from/left his tribe, or they were killed, right before he got the tattoos. I would LOVE the ancient elf background, though. That would make him like 100x more interesting to me.
I'm not sure it eliminates him as a LI, though. I mean, the reason it does with Cole is that he's mentally incapable of consent and, in all likeliness, he has no sexual desire just because that's not something spirits actually do. If Solas is an immortal elf, that just means.. he's immortal. He'd probably still have a libido, because elves obviously sexually reproduce and they did when they were immortal, too. He'd be able to consent, the Inquisitor is mentally capable of consent. It's not like this would be the first media to have an immortal character hook up with a mortal character.
There is so much to speculate on when it comes to Solas's origins and we have some pretty cool ideas floating around here.
But I also just REALLY want to know what his personality will be like! We don't have much on that front. Heck, Iron Bull has more personality information thus far than Solas does! Solas is so mysterious.
