I dunno, he seems like an outdoorsy type.  Part of me thinks the tight pants are probably because it's all he could find/acquire.  Or maybe he made them himself and just isn't very good with sizing things.  Because let's be honest, those would not be very convenient or comfortable traveling trousers.  Actually tight leather is about the worst kind of thing you could wear for armor, if you were heading into combat... it would restrict your mobility horribly.  Not to mention the things it'd do to your circulation.

 

But the tight pants are yet another point in his favor as a romantic interest.  You notice Cassandra, a confirmed LI, also has tight pants.  They're more than likely showing off that elven behind for a reason, ladies and gents, and it's not because he's secretly a body builder.

 

Leather.....are those pants supposed to be leather.....oh no come on you can't have a character wearing tight leather pants and NOT make them a LI!

Well, in his pic he doesn't appear to have on leather, but in the itty bitty pic with all the armors, some of it looks leathery to me... So I suppose you might be able to customize it?  I don't know...

 

Either way, whatever kind of pants he has, they're tight, and I'm pretty sure that's about the sex appeal.  And why would you worry about sex appeal for a character who is unavailable for romance?

Going back to answer your actual question...

 

Given Solas's outdoorsy, "blend-in-with-the-wilderness" look, I think we should expect a modern Solas to be wearing hunter camouflage, Red Wing boots, etc.  Or maybe some buckskin.  And he'd have his pants a couple sizes too small, just for effect.

This reminds me of a post I passed on Tumblr yesterday about putting hats on Solas and having his ears stick out from under it and how adorable that would be 

 

Also, as for what I actually think about his modern day outfit, I picture him in tight jeans that are starting to wear at the knees with hiking boots and a plaid shirt under a beat up jacket. He constantly looks like he's hiking/camping even when he isn't. And maybe a furry scarf too because he needs his fur!

 

Edit: And, for some reason, I can totally see him wearing those fingerless gloves that have a part attached that can change them to mittens
