Okay, I think I have come to the conclusion that the jawbone hanging on Solas's necklace may belong to a halla? Possibly? Would make sense as that is a sacred animal to elves, although to the Dalish specifically rather than city elves.
I say this because the amateur paleontologist in me was dying to try and solve what it was. It's definitely some sort of deer/cow/sheep/goat lower jawbone. The thing throwing me off is how quickly the end of it curves... most of the bones I've looked at online have a more gradual curve, which is why it makes me think halla because that is a deer-like creature that doesn't actually exist in the real world (apologies if that was shocking or a spoiler to anyone
).
Here was the reference picture:
And here were some of the similar ones I found from real critters. I have hidden the images in spoiler tags in case anyone is squeamish about animal bones.
The above is a 15,000-year-old red deer lower left jaw.
The above is a 10,000-year-old wild cow lower right jaw. It has the more abrupt curve at the end.
The fact that the only time you really come across black bones is when they are fossilized or beginning the fossilization process makes me think the bone Solas has is an old, old bone. If it was something fresh or that he took from a kill, the likely thing to do is to bleach it, which dissolves all the organic material and makes them white. Of course, he's a mage, so he also could have incinerated the organic matter off and such a process might also blacken bone, but the thing just seems to have more of a fossilized look to me.
It also appears to be from a juvenile, I would say, as it's awfully small. Now, there are some relatively small deer species, but I'm led to believe the halla are more closer kin to horses in size, considering they pull the aravels and were also ridden by the ancient elves.
I'd meant to mention something about thinking it might be a halla's jawbone, too, but you beat me to the punch.
Yes, it would be a small/young halla, if it is indeed a halla. But the jaw shape doesn't really match the jawline of halla we have seen in the past, who basically look like typical deer. You'd expect them to have a more deer-like jawbone, too, unless, of course, juveniles' jaw shapes are quite different. And yet I can't think, unless it's a big claw and not a jawbone, what it could be if not a halla.
With his attire, I tend to think Solas must be from Fereldan or maybe even the Anderfells. The Wilds, or the mountains--it would explain his clothing, and he might have been out there in the middle of nowhere for quite some time.
Here's the thing, though: If that's him in the apostate concept art, and it very well could be (I think it's a human, but what do I know?), then maybe all the apostates are living out in the wilderness now, and they'll all be dressed in hodgepodge clothing like Solas is.
Whatever Solas's story is, I'm sure it's interesting.
Hm. If the ancient elf theory is right, his smirk may have nothing to do at all with any hint of betrayal. "Oh you kids. I've been watching people from the Fade for centuries, and you're totally overreacting."
