Has anyone else read this blog post about Cassandra? It implies that the way Solas looks suggests a lot about him. I am assuming this is what Brass was suggesting, but it at least verifies that he doesn't look the way he looks just because..

Yes, I saw it a few months ago, and I agree. I thought it was a really good blog post.

HAHA. I was having this problem, too. I really want to romance Varric, but, like. . . that's what I named my kid. I'm not sure how I feel about romancing a character that now shares the same name as my son.

That is so cool!  I compromised and went with Alexander >.>  It's still sort of there!

The speculation that the thingy around his neck is a deer bone is giving me Falon'Din vibes.  Falon'Din was the elven god who guided the dead to the Beyond (the Fade), and according to the lore he first did so to carry a deer who was too tired to walk.  Solas is supposedly a Fade expert...

I... really like that :o  I know very little about the elves so this might be a good time for me to go read up.

I had a thought about the backpack, and I kept meaning to share it, and I keep forgetting.

I suspect that backpack holds all of Solas's worldly possessions.  Well, that and his pouches (which presumably carry his money, if he has any, and herbs, and maybe any little random collectibles he's gathered up--which are probably few and far between since he's apparently a wanderer, or something.

This makes me sad :crying: One of the few impressions of Solas that has stuck with me (I try not to settle on one lest I end up disappointed) is that he's just very alone.  I'm going to spoiler tag anything from TME, so here:

If we're looking at symbolism in their appearance, purple represents royalty which fits with the ancient elven noble idea quite nicely. (I think someone else pointed that out before but I'm saying it anyway!)

Maybe, but he also wears rags and blue.  But there is one outfit, the one he's wearing at the War Table, with that big fur wrap, that almost looks regal.  It's ragged splendor, but all the same he looks pretty impressive to me, wearing that.  Like the king of the forest.

I wonder what animal that pelt he wears came from. It seems pretty big. A wolf, maybe? Or maybe he took down a bear and used its fur. Bears are supposed to be tough fights in this game so it would definitely show off what a badass Solas is!

@ Banxey:
I was thinking that too, except for the dip down. Unless that's just cheek fat or something like a bulldog has. Nugs look so strange...

And I guess I can settle for less more man-flesh.

@ Lorien19:
It would break the common elf and human romance options mold, but I just do wonder...

Actually, to be painfully honest, what's been on my mind is the possibility that the first leaked illustrations are our romance options.
Note: I put a good chunk of text under a spoiler because I know ya'll don't want to read this so yeeeeppp. I just wonder if this is something I should present to the romance speculation thread.

Spoiler

Edit: AND IF I'M WRONG, IN THE END, I WILL... well... I WAS GOING TO SAY I'D EAT MY FOOT. But that's gross so, I'll let ya'll heckle/roast me.

That theory makes a little too much sense. Though the Inquisitors in there throw it for a loop enough that I can brush it aside.....kind of.

I seriously hope not :crying:  Because that means my first two choices are gone. One unavailable to my first playthrough and one not there at all.

I like Cullen but companion romances > NPC romances in my opinion. And Warden.....I guess I could get into it. But the implications of his age are way too depressing!

If you're right, my Inquisitor will be celibate, 'cause I have no interest in pursuing either Cullen or the Warden.  Your theory makes sense, but I just really hope you're wrong.  Really, really, REALLY.

Totally agreed.  My top two would be off the table :/  I sometimes wish that survey had never been leaked.  It's painful.

I think it's more likely that those concept arts from the leak are more representative of characters whose concepts had already been nailed down. I doubt they'd have romance info in a survey that early.

Elu.  Sweetie.  Honey.  I take back all the mean things I said about Dorian before because you just rescued my sad little heart.  <3

Edit: Ok, I'm going to turn my creep factor waaaaaay down after saying that.

That survey leak reminds me of Mass Effect 3's leak. They kept telling us that what was leaked was very early conceptual stuff and that we shouldn't read too much into it but it turned out that every single thing was true and in the game. Same with that survey, thus far. I don't think anyone doubts that DHMG is Dorian, for example.

I think the Warden is in his late 40s to mid-50s, though beards tend to age people and greying can happen prematurely, due to biology or stress--so he might be quite a bit younger.  Whether he's close to his Calling or not, I don't know--could be, if he underwent the Joining pretty young.  Either way, the Inquisitor is in his or her 20s to 30s, and the Warden's pretty much old enough to be his or her father.  This is why many of us believe he's out as far as romance goes.

Going by who looks closest to the Inquisitor, age-wise, we've got Solas, Cullen, Scribe Girl (I really wish she had a name), Dorian, Cassandra, Vivienne, and Iron Bull.  Almost all of the party.  Any of them could be romances.  I exclude Varric because of Bianca.

I'm convinced being close to his calling is going to be part of the Warden's story line just for how interesting it would be. That doesn't an ideal romance option-make along with everything else.

I'm going to reiterate what I said elsewhere and say that I don't think they'd force straight female or gay male gamers to only romance humans. It would be the first Dragon Age game to do so. So that gives me hope that the survey theory is wrong.

Edit: And I guess straight male gamers in this case too. Lesbian gamers would be the only ones who have an elf as an option if that theory is correct. Doesn't seem too plausible.

While I agree with Elu, there is another way to look at that picture.

Bi/MQuizzy/Straight/Gay

Bi/FQuizzy/Straight/Gay

So basically, M/F quizzy are in the line of options available to them, excluding the bi options of course.

Elves are traditionally bisexual options.  They might decide to shake that up, or maybe elves are just more open about these things.  And yet, Solas has male fans so I hope he's bisexual, not straight--even though his being straight is good news for male Cullen fans, and also good news for equality of possible companion relationships (if the NPC romances are bisexual, everyone has the same number of potential companion romances vs. non-companion romances, which is more fair than making the NPCs straight, thus leaving straight people with fewer companion romance options--however, it also means that Solas, who may be a major player in the game, we don't know that yet though, wouldn't be available to his male fans... someone's getting burnt regardless).

It's not everyday I say this, but I hope I'm proven wrong.

@ Dragondreamer:
Yooooo thanks for the insight. That's a pretty cool tidbit of information you got there.
Where on earth did you read that?

@ Banxey:
That entry made me so happy when I first read it. Especially the line, "it wasn't a hard sell to change the thinking and discussion away from "do I like what that looks like" to "does that visually say what we want."" If that doesn't give you hope for the future of female character designs I'm not sure what does.

- - -
In any event, I believe this is something I should bring to the romance discussion forum. From your reactions, I take it such has not been discussed as of yet. Perhaps one of those frequent posters could shoot me down with a compelling rebuttal. If anything, I would be disappointed in the lack of species diversity. I feel it would be taking a step back while Mass Effect took a step forward allowing for Turian, Quarian, Asari, and Drell romance options.

Yep, if Bioware learned anything it's that a good portion of the fans won't shy away from unconventional romance options. That makes me hope for more species and looks diversity in romance options in Dragon Age also. Even if many fans will complain about not finding certain companions attractive endlessly before they know the characters  :P
