Edit: Uh. Damn. Think of something..
I met him in a club down in Orzammar
Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like lyrium-potion
P-O-T-I-O-N potion
He walked up to me and he asked me to dance
I asked him his name and in a dark brown voice he said Solas
S-O-L-A-S Solas
This is what I get for listening to the Kinks this morning.
I'm guessing that Solas is going to be more on the how/why side of the breach problem, with Dagna working as the Inquisition's engineering division. I'm really hoping we get a bit of Solas and Dagna nerding out over magical theory.
That would be a dream come true. Dagna's my favorite NPC in all of Dragon Age, I'd love to see her interacting with my companions. I've been kinda ambivalent about Solas as an LI, but if he ended up geeking out with Dagna I'd romance him on the spot. Unless I could get the two of them together, that would be adorable.

With a tweet revealing that there is a character from Nevarra, and we don't know who, or if it's a companion... Could Solas be Nevarran? If he's a necromancer, it'd explain how and why.
More likely it'll be an enemy, but I've noticed that my "Solas might be the party necromancer" theory has gained... a lot of steam. I'd rather he be an ancient elf, but I just can't see that as likely. The necromancer notion, on the other hand, seems... ridiculously likely, even if I'd rather he be the rift mage.

Well, there hadn't been a new post in a while, and I figured I'd share the latest thing they'd tossed on Twitter. I'll try to make it more relevant next time :<

Cassandra is from Nevara (her family is in fact the ruling family, even if she is probably just a distant cousin to the King), unless the tweet stated it was an additional character from Navara?
Indeed, given that companions tend to follow one of the possible PC specializations and Vivienne most certainly isn't a Necro, plus if Dorian's old, old leak is accurate then his 'atypical'ness compared to other Tevinter Magisters makes it unlikely he would practice anything so close to Blood Magic. That leaves Solas to Necro.
But I think most of the reason people think he is a Necromancer is because that's a profession shrouded in mystery, and Solas is also shrouded in mystery, but that's mostly because we don't know anything about him, so he just screams mystery for now lol.

No, I'd forgotten about Cassandra, so you are probably right and it's her, and no one else.
As for Solas being a necromancer... I'm the one who floated that theory in this thread, and it's taken off since then. The reason I suspect it is because in many of his armor outfits, he is wearing a necklace made of some unidentified herbivore's jawbone: possibly halla, or nug. It may have no significance at all in terms of being a necromancer or not, and if it's a halla jawbone, he could still be a rift mage (or none of the specializations at all). However, it does seem a bit unusual that we know we're going to have necromancy as a specialization, and here's this elf guy wearing part of a dead thing around his neck. Character design is meant to reflect who that character is, in DA:I.
It seems that there may have been some other possible hint as well. Other people still think he's probably a rift mage, though, and I hope they're right. I hesitate to think what kind of person is a necromancer, when we know it's meant to be a darker, more evil path of magic--a replacement, most likely, for blood magic, which the devs have outright said is meant to be evil and they just never had a chance to portray HOW evil blood magic is.

Does being a necromancer preclude him from being an ancient elf? I mean I don't think the ancient elf thing is likely either, but an ancient elven necromancer might be.. interesting.
I don't understand how people can think he might be a rift mage considering we don't even know what a rift mage IS
unless that info was given to us recently and I'm missing something
I do enjoy the necromancer theory and how someone (Brass_Buckles???) theorized it being out of necessity to make sure the dead don't bother him. However, I will certainly admit I'm terrified he'll end up like Quentin(DA2) or Cicero(Skyrim); insane and obsessing over a dead woman. I want to convince myself that it won't happen, considering it has been done so many times, but it's always something that lingers in the back of my mind. I'd be on the 'nope' train very quickly.

I think it was the fact that Solas is a Fade expert that made people assume that. Being a rift mage probably has something to do with manipulating Fade rifts, which would fit a Fade expert. It still would but I can see why people might think he's a necromancer too. I kind of hope he isn't for various reasons, though.
I seeeeee
thanks

No, I'm not the one who made that particular theory on why he might be a necromancer. I was the one who first suggested he might be, due to his connection with death via his character design and the jawbone.

While I'm not immediately put off by the idea of Solas being a necromancer, I also hope they wouldn't go with the played out "I'm trying to bring back my beloved dead _______" (unless it's a dead nug, that'd be fine with me). I'm sure there are plenty of reasonable explanations for why one might turn to necromancy >.> Anyway, it's not the necromancy itself that would bother me, but the motivations behind it.

I want to hope they wouldn't do this, as it would call our minds very strongly to Quentin and Hawke's dead mom and that wouldn't really be a flattering characteristic to apply to one of your companions... *crosses fingers*

FRANKENNUG! That's an animal companion I could get behind. It squeals, it plays fetch, it occasionally loses limbs that need to be reattached...
of course, Solas's involvement in that would be pushing him firmly into "Tim Burton character" territory, but still...
Personally, I'm hoping that the companions have unique specializations so that they don't perfectly align with the ones we can choose. Not going to be too bothered either way, but I kind of enjoyed seeing the individual talents in DA2. I felt like it helped companions fit into a complimentary role that wasn't just a copy of something I could already do if I felt like it.
