We have mages from Tevinter and the Circle, maybe Solas is a representative of the Free Magi side of the Mage-Templar War? They're a major faction, and we have a Templar so maybe he'll represent the apostate view?

Perhaps as Fade expert he's an apostate more because he's interested in the inner workings of magic rather than practicing it under religious dogma? Dalish, Qunari, and Circle magic all function differently, and no one's really bothered to study/ask why.

More unfounded Solas speculation based on scotch bonnet candies and Laidlaw's snippet that we can tick our companions off enough to make them leave.  Inquisitor is pragmatic Dalish elf.

Solas: "Inquisitor, you cannot support Gaspard!  It is a betrayal of our people.  Do you want to see more generations of Elvhen children condemned to the slums, to servitude no better than slavery.   Have you no conscience?!"

Inquisitor:  "And would you prefer to see those Elvhen children die now, instead?  Gaspard has the troops and the tactical advantage to end this now.  And Celene is no better, she may speak of aiding the Elvhen, but she will do what serves her best."

Solas: "Celene has at least tried to aid our people.  To Gaspard we have less status than the horse he rides.  With Iron Bull's mercenaries we could bolster Celene's forces, and she already holds Val Royeaux."

Inquisitor: "Iron Bull's mercenaries are over a weeks march away.  In that time thousands more will die if I don't get these rifts closed.  To close them I need access to the city.  If I wait, that blood is on my hands."

Solas: "And the blood of future generations will be on your hands if you don't.  You have the gall to call Celene self-serving.  Look in the mirror.  For all you profess to support the Elvhen people, you only count the Dalish.  I'm through.  Goodbye, Inquisitor.  I won't wish you good luck."

OR, if the Inquisitor has enough influence with Solas.

Solas:  "And the blood of future generations may be on your hands if you do.  Just remember, there are more Elvhen than the Dalish, don't forget that." walks away -10 approval

I like this, but you remind me why I always prefer CE instead of Dalish. Sigh. I think the one thing I'll miss dearly from Origins will be the CE origin.  :(

no matter what, I love elves, but City Elf are my most loved ones. maybe because they fulfill the NWN/BG HalfElf role (my most loved race, with the Drow/HalfDrow). They are Elves, but at the same time have a more human culture. But are only see as Elves from Humans.

They aren't completely part of any of the two worlds, and both worlds reject them.

Ok. I'm going to mourn in a corner.

I'm thinking the same actually,it seems like the most likely background since all the characters shown until now, appear t represent each of the most important factions of Thedas(even though I'm still secretly rooting for the Solas=Ancient elf theory  ).

I still kinda support this too solely because I want there to be a scene where Solas reads ancient elvish poetry to the inquisitor.  :D Ah the opportunities with that theory..

Ooh,  do you think he's going to have one of those pretty brogue accents like the elves in DA2?

It'd be cool if he's an ancient elf, for sure - though, more realistically, I could see him being a window into that world somehow - he's studied it, or perhaps discovered something pointing to the fact that they still exist.  And I still like the idea of having a Somniari as a companion.

Hmmm...

Didn't they release their daily character profiles around this time last week?  Do you guys think they've given up on that?

Tehe, an elf and a mage, that's the equivelant of two ethnic minorities in one. Hopefully, that means he'll have some personality. The three most memorable apostates from previous games. Morrigan, Anders and Mage Hawke, all had decent senses of humor, so there's good odds there too. And he's a swanky dresser without overdoing it. And an expert on something directly relevant to the plot. And he just generally looks like a reasonable, moderate guy who won't shoot his mouth and snipe at people all the time, disrupting both crucial negotiations and party morale just because he has a stance of his own. I'm feeling optimistic about Solas. With a little luck, I'll never have to take Vivienne along except when dealing with other Orlesian scum. Ugh.

You tell me, I'm breaking my f5 button by constantly refreshing the twitter page to see if they're going to update it and show his profile this time. I don't care what anyone says I'm not letting go of my optimism and hopefulness okay!?  :(

I'd like him to have a brogue accent.Maybe he's like a certain character from TME,who knows a great deal about ancient elves to the point that someone may assume that he's seen Arlathan with his own eyes.

Hm, I was just reading about Cassandra and an interview on her, I came to the conclusion that she'd probably be my elfquizzy's best friend :D but then I wondered.. who do you think Solas' best friend would be? We've speculated on who he would get along with, but do you think he'll have a best bro or gal? Or is he a loner, or so awkward/weird that he can't make any friends? :P

I'm hoping he will be an expert on elvish history as well as the Fade.   Alternatively, together we will find an ancient elvish ruin and uncover hitherto unknown secrets of the past.    Whilst I found her obsession with the mirror and her demon dangerous, I did have a certain sympathy for Merrill wanting to recover more of their past because that was an on going desire of my own.

I'm having another one of my random thoughts, which may be completely wrong, so please don't shoot me down too cruelly.  I was looking at the timeline for the creation of the Circles and the Fall of the Dales.   The former preceded the latter by around 100 years.   So when the Dalish claim the Chantry missionaries were being a bit too pushy, could it actually have been Templars who rankled about the fact that in the Dales there were large numbers of free mages and they were in fact the ones in charge?    Whilst Merrill says they tolerate the Keepers now, presumably because they are so few in number and have no real political power, back in the time of the Dales there would have been far more and they were at the top of society (otherwise why are Keepers always mages now?)      You see, I can't see over zealous missionaries as being much of a problem - basically you just ignore them - but if those missionaries were calling for the mages to be locked up, that is a more serious issue, particularly if backed up by some fanatical Templars.  That could well account for why the Dales didn't help the Orlesians during the 2nd Blight, why they started attacking merchant caravans and finally launched an attack on Orlais itself.     It could also explain why it seemed so imperative to herd the majority of elves into alienages, so if any mages appeared they could be hauled off into the Circles before they caused trouble.   You see I have a theory that the Circles outside Tevinter have always been there to maintain the status quo where the non-mage noble families are in charge because the biggest threat to their hold on power would be mages within the commoners leading a revolt.

I've pointed out on another thread that the 3 mages we are given represent the 3 approaches to how you deal with mages (leaving out the Qun which is inhumane).  Vivienne is the close Circle system under the control of the Divine , Dorian is the open Circle system under the control of the Black Divine, who is also a mage, Solas is representative of the mage in the community system, which is a perfectly viable idea as evidenced by the Mages' Collective in Ferelden and the Dalish Keepers, who seem to actually epitomise Andraste's words in the Chant "Magic was meant to serve man, never rule over him," since the Keepers may govern their clans but serve the needs of their people and care for them and both mages and non-mages co-operate for the good of the clan.    Merrill's clan felt betrayed by Marathari because she had apparently cared more for Merrill and her own desires than for their welfare.     Whatever faults the Dalish have, and I do not claim they are perfect, far from it, their attitude to magic and mages is for the most part what I would like to see elsewhere.   Apart that is from their little obsession with summoning up demons to ask the odd favour, which as we know from DA2 and Masked Empire, never ends well.   Still, the Templars have always seemed pretty useless at preventing that anyway.

The issue is that there really isn't a really effective anti-magic in the DA universe. The Templars use lyrium to cancel out spells by basically throwing out magical static to "jam" the caster's spell. Spirit magic can disrupt spells by redirecting the flow of energy away from the caster. But unlike D&D, you can't make magic stop working completely within a localized area.

I wonder how well the Inquisitor's glow hand can seal Fade rifts? It would be pretty neat if the Veil was permanently sealed at the locations where the Inquisitor does that voodoo that they do.

This got me wondering, I hope Bioware shows off how the Inquisitor's armor can also change a bit based on their race (atleast I hope they kept that in the game)
