What if Solas is race gated against elves? Now that you all hate me, let me explain. Considering we're stuck being Dalish, it leaves open the possibility that one of the elves may be anti-Dalish. If Solas grew up hearing stories about the Dalish fighting the good fight, he may have left the alienage to find them when he discovered he had magic. As we know, most Dalish don't really care about CEs. But if he happened across a particularly hostile clan, he may have spent time with them before growing to resent them and leaving.

It would explain why he has no vallaslin and doesn't look like a mage from a circle (yet seems to have had magical training). If he is indeed withdrawn and solitary, it would make sense for him to be. If he feels as though he doesn't belong anywhere (in an alienage as a mage, a tower with mostly humans, or with the Dalish) he may prefer to be isolated. If he learnt the fundamentals of magic from a Keeper, he may have had a natural curiosity to find out more after he left, or was seeking out ways to protect himself from demons which lead to studying the Fade.

Anyway, I think it would be an interesting take on an elf. Sera could hate the Dalish instead of course. That would also be interesting to me.

It's possible, but I'd consider it unlikely.

Elves in general (Dalish or not) are so generally frowned upon by non-elves that I would suspect it's more likely for us to see an elf gated against all other races romantically than an elf gated against other elves.  This is particularly true for any elf character who may be interested in a family, since any children with a non-elf will not only not be elves, but will be frowned upon by humans as being "lesser," somehow.  Even aside from the possible family situation... An elf with a human or dwarf won't be seen as an equal.  The elf probably couldn't marry a human (I'm not sure on that but I STRONGLY doubt that such marriages are condoned in Thedas).

An elf gated against other elves, yes, even the Dalish (since most city elves kind of fawn over the Dalish and it wouldn't surprise me if elf Circle Magi feel the same) could be that way because of hatred of the Dalish, yes.  We've seen some rather self-interested Dalish clans; not all clans are that way, however.  But alternately it could simply be that the elf hates being an elf or is ashamed of it--self-loathing.  I don't get that impression from Solas.  As others pointed out, he could very well be bald because it makes his ears very prominent.  And I wouldn't want to have a character who has that much self-loathing be a romance option for anyone, in any case.

And having said all that, if Solas is available, I don't think he'll be open to everyone.  He might be gated against humans but open to all other races--and that would make more sense with the Orlesian situation than his being gated against elves. More likely, everyone (except maybe qunari?) would be able to romance him but it would be based on their actions.

However, at this point, it looks like Iron Bull is at least a fling option.  I think we can give up on Solas being available at all.  If he is, we can be pleasantly surprised by that--just think like Garrus and prepare for the worst so it doesn't hurt as much when we learn Solas is not available to our preferred Inquisitors.

I wonder if a scenario like that would happen in the game,it could be a possibility, the Inquisitor says he's being hunted for his powers in the trailer.

I'm not going to rule out Solas just yet...even if IB is an LI. I'm still optimistic about Solas being an LI,but if he isn't.

I'll be very upset if he isn't but I'm probably still going to buy the game,he's still going to be in the game and my Inquisitor is going drag him everywhere with her.  =]

But like I said I'm not ruling him out just yet.  :)

@Nefla Love your drawing your male elf is so cute, love the short curly hair it kinda reminds me of Scott Pilgrims's hair lol  :D

I think it would be awesome as an optional outcome (but you can still finish/win the game) of course I am biased

Question, how do you guys and gals imagine Solas will sound like?

Personally I imagine him having a deep voice(not IB deep though),after all we've seen elves with deep voices before, also do you think he'll have some kind of accent?

If you go back a few dozen pages many of us myself included are betting that he'll have an Irish accent hopefully a soft spoken Dublin accent. I'm betting it's going to be allen leech he even looks like a bald allen leech !! I just can't see him with any accent other than an Irish one or a scottish or welsh one but since Solas is an Irish language word i'm seriously betting he'll pop up with some sort of an Irish accent!

I wasn't saying it was likely, I just think it would be interesting. But it does seem Bioware are trying to think outside the box with characters, so an elf who is wary of humans isn't necessarily likely either. An elf gated against elves wasn't really what I was shooting for, the idea was centered around CEs really not understanding just what Dalish are. Similar to Bria. So I can't think of any reason why it couldn't happen.

I'm beginning to get frustrated with what I find attractive now, I don't have a particular interest in Dorian, Iron Bull or Cullen. Aaaargh what am I going to do when Solas isn't a romance? :( I'm still not going to give him up just yet though, there's still been sooo little info released on romances, and I'm not going to rule anything out until I see it confirmed by the devs. It would be interesting if he's race gated for elves, though I'm craving a romance where both my character is an elf and my LI is one (I always picked Alistair over Zevran in DA:O because I couldn't resist) so it's always been a human/elf pairing for me until now hopefully  :D

awww  <3  <3  <3 nugs! <3  <3  <3

And...here goes again why I prefer City Elves over Dalish.  :pinched: way better and free to roleplay.

I must admit I would be the first to not like a Dalish LI. Usually they always have this aura of arrogance that I can't stand, since is a underserved one. I can even like when characters are arrogant because they actually have the capability they boast.

The only Dalish I liked was Velanna, and because she was against the total stagnation of her culture. (Merrill in a way was too, but she was so only because she wanted her plaything restored, the mirror) and she can quite evolve in both her vision of humans and culture during the relatively small time she was with the Warden.

I think some character will have restriction. Like Varric maybe will be interested in elves and dwarfs, and IB only in humans and qunari.

and until is official, I'll still hope Solas is a romance for female Inquisitor. :(

if both him and Varric aren't LI, I'll think a moment about buyng the game at D1...I'm less than interested in Cullen, and IB, even if cute for my qunari warrior, wouldn't be my first choice. :crying:

Since we are being forced to play as a Dalish elf, I actually think that gives a much better chance of him being race gated for elves or elves/humans and bisexual.   The reason for this is that if you role play the Dalish as not willing to consider a romance with anyone other than an elf (which is consistant with how they are portrayed in the DA world), then you are stuck with either having to play a lesbian/bisexual female or have no romance at all.    Would they really be that cruel or judgemental?

I played my city elf girl with that sort of prejudice in DAO.   I thought it reasonable enough that since a human had tried to rape her, and the way humans treated elves generally, that she would never consider bedding a human.     I couldn't actually bring myself to be mean to Alistair when he tried courting me.   It seemed like kicking a puppy but I did try and play it as cool as possible until Zevran arrived on the scene, when the penny finally dropped with Alistair that it just wasn't going to happen with him.

I have a theory that bisexual characters will be race-gated to keep down on the number of individual cinematics that have to be produced, bearing in mind that would have to cater for male and female options.      So if Solas was going to be a romance but available to all races, then he wouldn't be bisexual but heterosexual.  However, that would leave gay male xenophobic Dalish elf with no love interest.

Still, I could be wrong, may be the Devs are going to pass judgement on people who play xenophobes by excluding Solas as a LI.   You want to play a prejudiced elf, you die alone.

So far i'm still optimistic, like I said.  And at this point, the prospect of Solas not being an LI isn't that problematic to me.  But that's only because I don't know enough about him yet to be really attached to the idea. But, I will be disappointed if neither Dorian or Solas are available.  As that leaves only Iron Bull and Varrick as potentials other than Cullen (I'm actually really excited about his inclusion, but understand he's not everyone's cup of tea), and I have no real interest in either.

Seems an odd choice for Bioware to make - they've created some pretty good, attractive options for straight females in the past - so if the choice in this game is Cullen (mind you, i like him, but can see the other side, where he's this generically attractive, boring guy you may well dislike from previous games) and guys like Varrick and IB, who might only have a niche group of romantically-inclined female fans.

I think Jonathan Rhys Meyers is a better fit as a face model.   He's the guy who played Henry Tudor in the series.  He also has played or is going to play Dracula.    It's the way Solas is looking into your eyes and the big pouty lips.   I'd put a picture here but I don't know how.   Suggest going and finding an image of JRM and then imagining him with a bald head and pointed ears.

That's a little extreme.. If they did do it, they wouldn't be doing it to pass judgement on anyone. They're creating characters, not blanks for PCs to force their wills onto. There were people in the Sera thread who were incensed over the idea that she was gay, because it meant they couldn't roleplay a Dalish elf whose desire was to procreate with another elf and boost the elven population. I'm sure they felt the decision was cruel. But Sera was out of reach of their desires long before they decided to have them. Then again it seems quite a few people don't seem to take what the characters may want into account. At the end of the day, someone wanting to roleplay a xenophobe has no more right to demand it than someone like me who wants to roleplay an Orlesian. But if I can't, I'm not going to take it personally.

For the record, I think it's highly unlikely that Solas will be elf only if he is a LI. But as I said, I thought the idea was interesting and it seemed to be something that hadn't been brought up before. In future I will only speculate about things that involve puppies, kitties, and rainbows. :P

I suppose my worst case scenario as far as romance would be if Solas was unromanceable or female only, and Cassandra was gated against elves.  But my favorite Warden didn't romance anyone, so I imagine I would survive.  :P   It's also very possible my Inquisitor will end up having chemistry with someone I couldn't predict, it's happened before.

haha, yeah, this is my worst case scenario too.  If my femquiz can't romance either Solas or Cass for various reasons, I might think about doing an elven male playthrough for Cass (even though I NEVER usually play as dudes if I can help it  :P ), but if she's gated against elves as well as being possibly straight... :crying:  Maybe Varric will be a LI...

As for planning characters in advance...I can't help it  :P  It's part of the fun of anticipation for me,  Also sets me up for heartbreak, but ah well.

EDIT: I can't decide whether IB being a LI ups Solas's chances or not.  I really wish I could want to romance IB, but...it's just not happening,

I get the feeling that IB might be limited to Qunari, humans, and maybe dwarves. What with the "won't break" thing.

I think I might romance Iron Bull with a Qunari when I get there, but Qunari/Elves always makes me think "Death by Snu-Snu".

If Iron Bull is a romance, I think he's most likely race gated against elves.  Which might work in Solas' favor, as race gating may increase the LI pool.

You're probably right, though I wish it wasn't the case since I want to romance him with an elf really bad. :( Though he'll probably end up being a fling at most and not an actual romance :crying:

I don't think I'd mind Bull being just a fling. It was kind of annoying how every other "just a fling" character ended up falling madly and deeply in love with your Warden or Hawke. Sure, it can happen, but the idea that a character really is just in it for the fun and nothing long-term would be an interesting change. You want love and romance, go ahead and pursue one of the others. You want a bit of bunk warming for the night? Sure, I'm game, and so on.

I really like when characters are well-rounded individuals and not just there to be the backdrop and reward for the protagonist. Though Bull seems hilarious enough that it won't matter in what capacity he is on the team or in your bed. <_<
