I'm looking forward to playing Dalish, one who is interested in progressing his people without throwing away who they are.  At least when he isn't busy trying to save the world.  (And if he can do both at the same time, hey!) I really wish we could see some Dalish mage armor, so far the mage Inquisitor is always wearing the same Orlesian looking outfit.  I hope Solas doesn't hate Dalish, but well, I like to romance Fenris with mage Hawkes, so I suppose I'll manage.

My Dalish warden was fun, he didn't hate humans but he had a touch of arrogance that started to show up whenever someone would question his orders.  The Alistair exasperation was way up there.  :P   He's also my sole Morrigan romancer, and that was fun because he had a little freakout when that started getting serious.  But it was a nice turning point for him to finally accept that he was never going home, and maybe that wasn't all bad.

In the event that Vivienne is an LI, I'm planning on making an elven mage who has the Dalish "we're better than you" attitude in spades. If there was one person who you really wouldn't want handling the delicate task of building the Inquisition it would be this guy:

Blackwall: Is he still ranting about the ancient elves?

Solas: Probably.

Blackwall: I could just hit him over the head with an axe handle.

Solas: (produces a flask) Or we could just take a drink every time he says "elvhan".

Blackwall: I like how you think.

In origins I only have complete playthroughs with Elven PCs and if they were in a romance, it was Zevran.  I found it to be really logical that my elven PCs would not be interested in the human companions.  Racial differences in DA = Different species so I think it's fair to say that they would naturally be more attracted to their own species.  In addition, they have been enslaved, betrayed and kept down by humans. Also, the great houses visited in origins invariably had elven servants scrubbing floors etc, which I always imagined would make elven PCs very uncomfortable.

CE pcs really didn't like humans at the start, as I could never bring myself to spare Vaughan from there they would grow to develop varying levels of trust, but never to the point of starting a relationship with Alistair.

My Dalish were usually less hostile, as their distrust was more from what  they had been told about humans, rather than personal experience, but it never seemed plausible that they would romance Alistair

Being tied to being human in DA2 messed this up a bit but Fenris is unique in being without memory, and his blame seemed to stop at Mages,  maybe because he fixated on them to the exclusion of anything else.

sorry for the rambling!  Oh,  I get sent a box of deli food every month, I don't get to pick what's in it... I like the surprise.

I got this today, and thought of this thread.

Ooh, sweet and hot (I'll take my Solas that way, please), that sounds like it might be good with a little cream cheese on crackers!  Mmm... my family always serves jalapeno jelly that way at parties.  So hungry now :(

I think the cream cheese and crackers sounds like a good plan,  I will try tomorrow... if I can find the courage. :)

Hmm, what you say regarding the Dalish is true but I thought they might be willing to stretch a point if the non-Dalish was an elf.    To be honest, I'm curious to know why we're being restricted to being a Dalish elf rather than a city elf.    I'm thinking there has to be some plot element to it, particularly with the events of the Masked Empire.

Which makes Solas even more of an enigma.   He doesn't look Dalish, he doesn't seem like a former Circle mage, which would make him a long term apostate but where did he originate and how has he been surviving up to now?    I think that is why he will be one of the last to be revealed and then possibly only a partial one, to retain his sense of mystery.

Welllll...

Spoiler

And that's why I personally think we can't be a city elf this time around.

You're assuming a level of Organization amongst CE's that is highly unlikely. If every CE had access to *spoiler* then any human could simply torture the code out of them, and everyone would have access to it.
The way that I see it (and the only way that makes sense) is that a very small part of the Elven Uprising (which isn't even confirmed, since the elf from TME had only herself and no-one else to help) have direct access to *spoiler*, while everyone else involved in the uprising makes due with normal means.

Even in the real world with cell-phones and the internet that level of organization is extremely hard to come by.

Slightly off current topic of thread, but I've been wondering if any of the shots of Solas show his feet.   To put it another way, will elves now have proper footware?     I can see something that looks like the top of boots in some shots but that is not conclusive since the feet could still be cut out.   I could never understand why Merrill and Fenris effectively went semi-bare foot.    Do elves have exceptionally tough feet through never having worn shoes or boots?   Do they not feel the cold?   It was clearly not simply a Dalish thing, since Fenris came from a completely different culture.   Since we can customise their clothes, I take it that means they will be able to wear boots again.   Zevran really loved his boots.

I recall both Dalish and City Elves with and without shoes in DA2.  From what we've seen so far, Solas appears to have outfits both with and without shoes.  It appears that it's now an established elven culture thing in the series.  (I remember something about the concept artists wanting to emphasize the elves feeling literally connected to the earth or nature or something.)  But since we're given a choice where the Inquisitor and the companions clothing is concerned, you can wear what you want.

The shoeless thing used to bug me more, but I've finally gotten used to the idea.  My Dalish Quizzy is likely to go barefoot most of the time.  My Surana loves his big ol' boots tho.

Like I say, they must have really tough feet.   Most cultures where people go bare foot tend to be in hotter climates.   The further north you go, the stouter the footwear.    So Fenris was understandable because he came from Tevinter but Merrill's clan was from Ferelden, wet, muddy and in the winter really cold.   Feeling connected to the earth is all very well for a grassy summer meadow but not for freezing cold mud, ice and snow.   I thought the Dalish were a practical people.    Well if I play a Dalish, I'm opting for stout footwear.   Not going to have saving the world held up by frostbite or burnt feet from flying dragon fire.

At first I thought that walking around barefoot would be pretty fitting if you're playing as a Dalish inquisitor, but on the other hand.. looking at the monsters we're going to have to fight I'd rather not walk through all the demonic ichor, spidery bits and human intestines after a battle or other sticky guff that we'll encounter (which is probably is a lot)  so nope, I think I'll be keeping my boots on. :P

If the ambientation was totally desertic, I wouldn't have a say about the shoeless Elves. But in most of the places of DA is either forest, or very rocky terrain...not really good for feet, no matter how strong is the feet's skin.

I'm very happy about the retun of shoes and boots for Elves.

I'm about 90% sure that you can see Solas's feet in that group shot on the stairs. It seems like he switches between boots and going barefoot from what we've seen of the screenshots. Unless they've changed it, it's probably the different variations in his armor that do that.

But Sera wears boots. I'm not sure what to make of that. Maybe now it's that elves connected with the Dalish are the ones that go barefoot? Not that we have any evidence that Solas is connected to the Dalish but it's a thought. Sera might just wear boots to signify that she's not really connected to elf culture, though.

Considering how often Merrill would comment that she had stepped in something in a grossed out voice and at least once stated that shoes seemed like a good idea (though she never acts on it) I don't think wearing shoes is being anti elf.

But as s someone above said, who wants to trudge through blood and such barefoot?

From what I remember, it was a decision by the artists for the elves not to wear shoes in Dragon Age II; I recall the writers being opposed to it (including a suggestion by the artists explaining why Fenris wouldn't wear shoes), which seems to be why Fenris and Merrill make snarky remarks about not wearing shoes.
