I just know that Cole is going to get a lot of hugs from my inquisitor already :D, was the other companion written by David Gaider supposed to be romanceable? I can't really remember, but if that's the case then YES PLEASE let it be Solas!

So Weekes wrote Cole! So that leaves Solas or Dorian as Gaider's character.

Also, I don't think I could be much more in love with Iron Bull. That dude is incredibly chill! He even doesn't mind Cole despite his issue with demons!

Seriously!  That's why I'm so glad for Cole.  I needed at least one companion that my Inquisitor wouldn't want to jump into bed with... I was starting to feel like a lech.

What other writers are possible for Solas/Dorian? (I'd put my money on Gaider writing Dorian though)

So... Patrick Weekes wrote Cole.  The chances that Mr. Gaider wrote Solas just improved! ^_^

Edit: We need Solas asap because he has been unseated by Cole as my top hugging candidate >.<

Yoooo what? Yooo what? What what?
Wait what?
Where?

Edit: never mind I found it. Time to read about Cole!

So that makes Weekes in charge of Iron Bull and Cole? (Someone else too right? Gosh, that list I compiled is buried pages upon pages back) Was he the one we were also talking about writing a not white/male/straight character too? ... does that make it Iron Bull? Or perhaps he's really writing Scribbles. I can't imagine him being in charge of THREE companions? But maybe. AHHHH! I'm confusing myself again! @___@

I don't see this as necessarily good news, because if we're going with Solas vs Dorian as written by Gaider as the last LI I'd bet my money on Dorian.

I'm very surprised myself. I would have burned a hand for Cole being written by Gaider. Big leap of faith, I don't think many writers would be fine with others persons writing theirs characters.

(whoa: guys/girls: we have almost 300 pages!!!Our village is growing up so nicely...)

I know. I'm clinging to the hope that the introduction of race-gating means we'll have a couple more LIs.

Because if Solas isn't...

I'd survive but be pretty upset. I've been mentally preparing for it for a while now. Welp, if he isn't one, Iron Bull here I come!

COLE

cole-article-header.jpg

[DRAGON AGE]: When we last spoke, we talked about the Iron Bull, but you're also the writer for Cole. What can you tell us about him?

[PATRICK WEEKES]: Imagine going through this world knowing that you're different, but not knowing how. Imagine trying to find out the truth about what you are—a mage? A demon?—and never being sure that you can trust the answer, or that your friends will still support you when the truth, whatever it is, comes out.

Cole-article-image.jpg

[DA]: The proverbial being stuck between a rock and a hard place.

[PW]: Exactly. That was Cole's character arc in the wonderful Dragon Age: Asunder, by our lead writer, David Gaider… and now that character arc is done. In this game, we find out what happens next.

[DA]: So, you're taking over a character originally penned by David Gaider. No pressure, obviously.

[PW]: Indeed. Dave is great at creating sympathetic characters, and I loved Cole's arc in the novel. I was guessing at his true nature until the climax of the book. But I couldn't just tell that story again. The character has to grow, for one thing… and also, that arc was tied to Cole not knowing what he is. Once Seeker Lambert whips out the Litany of Adralla, that pretty much narrows Cole down to blood mage or demon, and since he wasn't using blood magic…

[DA]: So, Cole is definitely a demon?

[PW]: Welllllllll… he's definitely somewhere on the Demon-or-Spirit Spectrum of Fade Creatures (which I really hope exists somewhere). A lot of people will always see him as a demon. He would rather be a spirit. He's trying.

[DA]: It sounds like Cole suffers from a very complicated existence.

[PW]: Now that he has accepted his nature, he's less constrained by human limitations. He can sense people's pain, which is actually what he was doing back in Asunder without realizing it, when he found the mages who were terrified and desperate enough to be able to see him. He can find people who are hurting, people in need, and he can help them.

[DA]: Clearly, there is no foreseeable way that could go wrong.

[PW]: Cole remains a work in progress, yes. Anyone who allows him to join the Inquisition (and because there are people whose response to him in Asunder was, "Demon? LOL NOPE," allowing him to join is optional) is going to hear about some weird things happening, with no one quite sure who put all those turnips in the fireplace or why the battlements are covered with loaves of bread.

[DA]: You mentioned that the player can choose not to have Cole join the Inquisition. Are the other followers going to have an opinion?

[PW]: Oh, Maker, yes. Vivienne thinks Cole should be safely banished, and Sera refuses to talk to "it" entirely.

[DA]: As does the Iron Bull, presumably. You said during a previous interview that he had a thing about demons.

[PW]: See, Bull is funny. He does hate demons, but if you're on the team, you're on the team. In Bull's mind, Cole is a weird squirrelly kid who just needs a night of good drinks and bad women to get him sorted out.

[DA]: Well, since you wrote Cole, tell us why you think he would make a great follower.

[PW]: If you want someone who can move around the battlefield undetected, sinking daggers into enemies who never see him coming, Cole is your guy. He can still make people forget him, but he's no longer the scared young man who couldn't stand against Seeker Lambert in Asunder. He knows he's more than human, and he is absolutely deadly when faced with foes who want to hurt innocent people (which safely applies to most of the Inquisition's enemies).

[DA]: Useful!

[PW]: Beyond his skill in combat, though… Cole wants to help people who are hurting. He may not always get it right, but he never stops caring. He will walk into the most painful moment of someone's life and offer them comfort without hesitation or judgment. And then he will disappear from their mind and walk away, because it's not about getting thanked, or even remembered. It's about helping.

[DA]: That's very touching.

[PW]: That's how Cole has grown since the events of Asunder. That's where he's going now. I hope people like where it takes him.

For anyone that can't get to the site.

SUCH A GIF. I'm keeping that gif there.

That's what I was hoping with race gating. (And then yada yada I go into details about whose bits work with whose and blah blah I don't want to open that can of worms again) Not necessarily having only 3 of each gender and then race gating on top of it.

If that's the case I hope Solas gets a darn good story arc and then my Inquisitor will just like... go on rag-tag adventures with her adopted man-child Cole. (IDK actually, I haven't read Asunder so I may actually hate Cole and be interpreting his characterization incorrectly.)

same here. Iron Bull is making room for himself in my heart. I know I would romance him with a Qunari, if I can.

I must admit. this time I like all the companions, at least from the first impressions I have of them. They are all interesting in my eyes, in one way or another.

I remember not liking Isabela and Fenris the first time I saw them. Isabela I still don't like even now, Fenris grow on me, but is always elven Cloud in my eyes.

Patrick Weekes

The Iron Bull

Cole

Mary Kirby

Vivienne

Varric

I wonder what Solas' view on Cole is going to be, I don't think he'll be like Sera and ignore him. I think he'd rahter harass the poor boy 24/7, I'm starting to think that Solas and Cole will be a lot in my party from now on, I can't wait to hear the banter between them. :D

Hmm. Bet David wrote Dorian. But I still hope he wrote Solas, and I'll be clinging to that until all hope is gone. I just really enjoy his characters! Sheryl is hilarious on twitter, though, and I do love Isabela, so...I wouldn't complain about that either.

Hopping on the Iron Bull love train too...I think he's going to be an awesome party member. The more I hear, the more I like.  :)

Don't forget that there would have been individuals responsible for the advisors too, who likely have quite a bit of writing involved as well. Who wrote Cullen for DA2? Was it J. Hepler? And what about Lelliana? Assumably Sheryl wrote her again...

I just hope he's civil towards him, as a Fade expert I could see it going either way. *Knows enough to see all spirits as dangerous, distrusts him* *Knows enough to see Cole as an interesting and unique specimen* which depending on how tempered by empathy he is could be terrible or potentially adorable.

I'm really hoping that he sees Cole's uniqueness and at least eventually comes to feel protective of him in a kindly way.

*edit: Oh! And agreed, assuming nothing goes awry with this idea when they announce Solas...I expect my go to party for my first playthrough to be Iron Bull(my bromance,) Cole(my lil bro/son figure,) and Solas as LI. *crosses fingers that this will work out* And if it does I think it'll lock in my first playthrough as my originally intended Dalish Elf. ^_^

Didn't DG say that he wrote two LIs.  If that is the case and he wrote both Dorian and Solas, Solas would be out of the running as I'm sure Dorian is a LI.

I'll prepare my Inquisitor to stop nerdy Solas from vivisec Cole. I can feel it in my bones.

I really hope only one thing: that the companions would not end up as in DA2, where some of them where always at each other throat. I'm fine with a good dose of rivalry, they can't be all friends...but when I have in party Merrill, Fenris and Anders together, I can almost see Hawke wanting to broke a wall with her own head. or something like that.

I know right, it's fine if some people don't like one another and that makes it more real and interesting but I really don't feel like another scenario like in DA2 where whenever you had either of those three people in your party in whatever combination they were ready to tear each others throats out. That really impacts who I pick as my party members because I really don't want to hear them yelling at each other all the time and get irritated because of that...

People have speculated that someone took over when Ms Hepler left but I'm pretty sure there's been no confirmation of who wrote him.
