I highly doubt they'll just make Solas a carbon copy of Merrill but let's try not to argue about the Merrill romance in this thread, okay? Don't want to derail things too badly!

I don't think they'll repeat it either. They might use similar formulas across different settings (like BG, DA, Kotor, etc have some similar characters) -- but not in the same setting.

Based off of the "smirk" picture he might be awkward in the Sherlock Holmes/Insufferable Genius sense. He's apparently our resident Fade expert after all.

Bioware would have my love forever and ever if they did this. Not that they don't already but seriously...this kind of awkward would be so much fun.

The problem I see with it for some mages is that they probably couldn't make it so that it could ONLY be a choice. I think almost everyone would support it if it were a choice option only, but tranquility isn't and this could almost certainly be forced, also. If you're a powerful mage and support mage empowerment, the idea that templars could just take that power away from you entirely is likely not a pleasant idea.

And, honestly, if tranquility could be redesigned so it ONLY took away magic with no side effects, why WOULDN'T they use it wholesale? It completely nullifies the threat of abominations and leaves former mages with no drawbacks everyone else doesn't have. It's an ideal solution to the problem and hurts no one. That's also why I think tranquility can't ever be solved in this way. It's a completely necessary evil for tranquility to have a massive drawback.. for the plot.  :P

I think it would only be a problem for the plot if it was a perfect solution. But it's not. Pharamond cured himself, so there is no reason to suggest that modified tranquility would not also be curable. And there would be plenty of conflict in the story to support the plot if as you say, there are people made modified-tranquil who have no need to be. I think the Mage/Templar thing needs to be resolved enough so that it becomes background noise and stops being a focus. And this is potentially a good way to do it by reducing the greater threat of mages while not wiping one side out all together. I don't like the idea of removing factions completely, or returning to the status quo.

I don't know about insufferable genius type but maybe he's just really cocky and sure of himself when he talks about anything to do with magic or the fade, since he's an expert. But when he's thrust into things/situations he's not so experienced in, he gets awkward :P

I highly doubt he's going to be like Merrill. Remember, he's candied peppers, and really hot peppers at that. Obviously he'll have a fire to him, so maybe he's very dedicated and doesn't take any **** about what he believes in or what he thinks is right.

That doesn't mean he's not uncomfortable in certain situations, though. I mean, the guy dresses like a wilds hobo so maybe if you're trotting around through some Orlesian ball he starts getting fidgety and awkward. Maybe he's more comfortable and put together around the common folk but has no clue how to deal with nobility or get along in fancy schmancy situations, etc.

Which would be adorable, honestly.

I agree,in a way,Morrigan could be considered awkward as well, due to her limited interaction with people...Both Merrill and Morrigan were like fish out of water when it came to social interaction but because of the different personalities each of them had, that awkwardness was portrayed in a completely different way.About Solas, so far his choice of attire and looks give a practical down to earth vibe, so he doesn't seem the type that would get along the flamboyant Orlesian nobility,to me at least...

I like both of these points of view. I wonder if Solas has spent a lot of time buried in books, or even a lot of time in the Fade and has problems with social interaction because of it.

I was just typing out something like this!  Great minds! :)  We don't know how someone becomes a Fade expert, but sometimes experts and master scholars are withdrawn and awkward because they spend all their time alone devoted to their craft.  I feel like he's probably sacrificed other parts of his life to master the Fade, since that sounds like a pretty huge subject to master.

Solas = Sheldon. I can deal with that.

He could be the voice of reason. Like Aveline or Wynne.

This sounds like a good idea, a kind of counterpart to Vivienne or Cassandra, if we knew her personality in reference to combat stuff.

I wonder, could Solas be a misspelling of Solace? Possibly a spirit in the elf body?

It would also explain his rather utilitarian look. Studying the Fade must also be dangerous and an intelligent person who is also a powerful mage wouldn't put themselves too close to anyone he could endanger.

No, in the German magazine, Solas was misspelled as Solace. This was confirmed by the devs. He's called Solas. It's elvish for pride, or to stand tall.

I like the idea of Solas being a voice of reason. If you're generally an idiot, you probably don't make it very far into the Fade business.

Or... perhaps it would be interesting if Solas is quite cocky, and arrogant? I mean, Dworkin Glavonak - the crazy bomb-making Dwarf in Awakening - knows his stuff, but could be called reckless. His brother even needs to warn him to be careful.

Fade business is like bomb business. It just involves more demons and (arguably) less boom.

I'm wondering if Solas' expertise with the Fade means that he's a dreamer? Were that the case, him being an apostate would make sense.

Being a walking invitation for demonic possession isn't something the Circle or most Dalish clans are willing to risk. For all we know he could be living in Bruce Banner-style isolation so that his research doesn't hurt anyone.

If I recall, the magazine initially said he was somniari but comments by the devs put that theory to bed. Did they actually say specifically that he WASN'T a dreamer? I don't remember.

Well it definitely looks to me like he's been living off the land for a while with his bear belt and 3-4 layers in some of his armor variations.  Now I'm just imagining badass Solas, killing and skinning a bear.

Also, the color of some of his clothes would blend into the Fade pretty well too, not just "natural" settings.

News that he's a Dreamer is interesting..

Err... I'm going to just suggest that people wait until they either read the article proper, or wait for something in their own language.

Simply throwing that out there.

Edit: Link is already in there. Duh, Banx. Stupid daylight savings.
