(also, I'm looking at Dramatic Hands Moustache Guy again and now I think *he* might be Dorian. The concept art for Tevinter mages in World of Thedas includes a sword, which DHMG has, and the clothing style looks vaguely similar)

that's what I've been thinking all along

Shartan wasn't a mage, that theory is too far fetched.

I can't wait till we can learn more about our companions backstories and maybe what makes them tick.
Obviously Cassandra is with us to serve the Divine, but why is Varric there, etc.?

I think bald elf looks interesting and there is no way he'll be boring - he's a BioWare character!

Just dying for snippets of information now.

Well, Varric could be representing the Dwarven Merchant's Guild, or he has knowledge on Red Lyrium which one of the antagonist factions use.

Obviously Varric is to tell tales about us. How else would generations remember us?

"Men are haunted by the vastness of eternity. And so we ask ourselves: will our actions echo across the centuries? Will strangers hear our names long after we are gone and wonder who we were, how bravely we fought, how fiercely we loved?"

True, it had slipped my mind that Varric has dealt with the lyrium idol and the thaig.

I wonder why bald elf joins up though or where he's from.
If he's a Mage, Vivienne is from the circle, so I doubt he is too, but he has no Dalish tattoos.
I know some people think he's from Tevinter.

You are making an big assumption there (i.e. Cassandra serving the Divine).

Varric is traveling with Cassandra, that is known since the GI reveal last year.  They allied over a "common cause" after DA2 ending (we don't know what that is) and you really have to wonder why Varric run after Cassandra after the interrogation too...

As for not!Zathrian, he's the totally opposite of Vivienne in term of appearance. I can't decide if he is an apostate or a Dalish. His clothing are quite "outdoorsy", but they do not look Dalish one bit.

I think it's a logical assumption though, unless something major happens involving the Divine, Cassandra is still loyal to her.
She works closely with Leliana, who is close to the Divine, then there's the plot to Dawn of the Seeker (which I saw a while back, so my recollection could be hazy), and the fact she was interrogating Varric for her "precious Chantry" as he so aptly put it.

Still, I guess she may not be, but with the info (or lack of) we have now, I think it's safe to assume.

Sorry for going off topic :P

But I agree, he doesn't look Dalish.

We could move that discussion in the Cassandra's thread. You are still making assumptions, like Varric does (and 99% of the BSN over everything) might I add.

It's a bit like the people called not!Zathrian by a name that showed up in a survey (Dorian) just because he is a mage and a companion, despite him not matching the description. There is no way that poor elf is a Tevinter Magister just by the clothing alone.

Do you truly believe he'd wear Tevinter garments after years in exile? Does Lambert wore Imperial uniform?

Exile? Where is that coming from?  This is what leaked survey says about Dorian:

Dorian Pavus is a Tevinter magister. The title conjures fear of arcane master who once enslaved nations. Dorian may wield the power of the magisters, but he delights in not being what you would expect. Brazen and clever, this outcast is on a crusade to rid his homeland of its corruption."

Nothing in there gives me the impression that Dorian Pavus has been year in exile or that he is trying to hide that he is a Tevinter Magister...

Everything is assumptions and speculations at this time.

As for bald elf, it's not clear who he's affiliated with because he doesn't appear to be Dalish or part of the Chantry, whereas for Varric and Cassandra, it's fairly obvious (assumption).

I certainly have the feeling that this elf is going to be interesting ... Looks and dresses relatively unremarkable* - there almost certainly has to be quite a bit to his story and/or personality. I'm curious to learn more about him. The Tevinter magister theory has intrigued me from the start, but well ... I try not to speculate too much.

(* being bald, either by choice or not, isn't that big of a deal, is it? It's not uncommon. And, to be honest, I prefer it this way. I don't want all the characters to meet some "beauty standards", which don't even work for everyone. I want them to look as it fits their personality. I want to be able to take them seriously as characters, not just eye-candy.)

He does delight in not being what you'd expect, though.

Maybe the artists counter-intuitively drew him *without* many distinguishing Tevinter features. That is also only his iconic gear, and depending on how customisable companions are, I'm sure there are outfit options that look more like an actual magister.

(I posted what looked like one of them above, in the cave concept art. That looks like a Tevinter Laetan mage outfit from HoDA)

Maybe he could be somewhere in-between? When do the Dalish get their facial tattoos? Isn't it a rite of passage to adulthood? If this guy was born Dalish but taken from his tribe to a circle in his youth, then later escaped, he might well end up looking a bit scruffy and wild, not fitting in anywhere anymore.

After looking at Vivienne, I definitely think our Shartan/Zathrian reincarnate will be the healer of the group. I hope so, at least. I imagine Vivienne as more dps than concern for healing.

It's always possible that mages won't have a specific speciality this time, though. As far as I'm aware in Origins there were no restrictions on companions' skill trees inside their class.

They've said that any warrior can be trained as any role in DAI, and the same with rogues (though I'm not sure about Varric). We've seen Cassandra with a two-handed sword as well as sword and shield, for example.

Also, it's not certain that healing will even work the same way this time. With the changes to the health mechanics, I doubt mages will be able to run around healing the entire party at the drop of a hat.

This. The fact that BEM doesn't have his Vallaslin pretty much rules him out as a Dalish. The blood writing is something elves get when they come of age. So to be that old with no markings... Not Dalish.

Unless, of course, they just haven't designed it yet. Which is always possible (I am kinda hoping that he ends up with the samurai-esque hair he has in the War Room concept. Mostly because his look in that art haunts me).

Varric can equip daggers: http://social.biowar...ndex/17705320/3
As for mages, I think that this times all the general skill trees will be available to our companion.

Nice to know, thanks.

I guess that means their role in combat won't necessarily be dictated by their background or story hooks, in the way that Anders' and Merill's were.
