I love this theory.  It makes a lot of sense. Why add that codex?

I feel sad for Merrill then, a bit.  Like Morrigan she left to search and recover the treasures of her people and one of the greatest was right there.  Because Solas is a treasure <3

Right? I actually went back a few minutes ago to one of my end-game saves, and sure enough, the odd darkening of the sky occurred. It was pretty exciting.

Poor Merrill, haha. It's probably been said a million times, but she and Solas would have had so much to talk about. Even if just on the subject of spirits and demons alone. And the Eluvian!

The only downside with them having everything planned out is that they are probably well aware of what we're fishing for if we ask about eclipses, hehe. Although even if we get the 'spoilers!' response, it might be interesting to see what they say!

I am personally curious as to what was trying to break out during Witch Hunt. When Zenovia says something like, 'The prison has been breached! The shadow will consume all!' When does that take place on the timeline? There's no follow up with it, but the writers have said her predictions are not random.

After the Fen'harel reveal, they'd probably answer with "spoilers!" but I wonder if that would have been the case after DA2 was just released. I confess I never thought anything strange about these things, even the darkening atmosphere. It didn't occur to me certain aspects were more than flavor, and now here we are, haha. Could the prison have been referring to Corypheus, or would that have been too soon?

And now you've gone and made me picture Lavellan singing this to Solas.

Now I have it in my head they have this ridiculously 80's esque movie montage to this song.  Where they are just going these magical Fade dates.

Oooh! Maybe. I really am not sure where the timeline sits for Corypheus. /ponder

After today's conversations, I'm really beginning to think we should create an DAI: 80's Highschool AU.

Waaaaaait a sec, isn't Falon'din sometimes referred to as "The Shadow"?

Constellation: Tenebrium

Called "Shadow" in the common parlance, likely due to the ancient association of the constellation Tenebrium with Lusacan, the Old God of darkness and the night. It is odd, however, that the depiction for this constellation has always been an owl and not a dragon, even in the Tevinter texts. This lends credence to the widely-held belief that Tenebrium was a name meant to supplant an older, elven association - perhaps with the elven god Falon'Din, sometimes represented in tales as a giant owl. There is, of course, another explanation: owls are nocturnal hunters, and among earlier people, were considered terrifying omens of loss.

--From A Study of Thedosian Astronomy by Sister Oran Petrarchius

A Song to Falon'din

he People swore their lives to Falon'Din
Who mastered the dark that lies.
Whose shadows hunger
Whose faithful sing
Whose wings of death surround him
Thick as night.

Lethanavir, master-scryer, be our guide,
Through shapeless worlds and airless skies.

──Song to Falon'Din, found in the Temple of Mythal, author unknown

Do you guys realize how much this thread is going to EX-PLODE with the next DLC? Assuming it's Fen'Harel/Solas related in the SLIGHTEST.

Like, watch out Kim, Solas Appreciation Thread is probably going to break the internet.

I wrote about this a while ago, but I doubt Morrigan is the villain in any sense. She was put in the middle, technically, and she's made her place in it and is fighting her way out.

Solas isn't the villain either.

The "villain", I think, is Flemeth.

And when I say villain, I don't mean the typical guy with a cigar yelling "FOOLS". Like Corypheus. BioWare loves to make us sympathize with the bad guy, and they didn't do that with him. Morrigan, Solas, and Flemeth were given that special attention though. And they're all considered to be against the protagonist, and have hidden agendas; but they're still people, and they form attachments.

Morrigan wants to preserve power and history, and she cares deeply for her son.

Solas wants to help his people, and he cares deeply for Lavellan.

Flemeth wants Mythal and herself avenged, and she seems to care about Morrigan but their relationship is terribly distant.

Morrigan would give up everything for Keiran.

Solas may very well throw himself in front of Lavellan, and that's another reason why he left.

Flemeth...I want to say she would protect Morrigan, but I honestly have no idea if she would. It's been about ensuring people's survival for her needs thus far.

I think she is the most dangerous, because she wouldn't really question what she has to do, willing to do, what she will do. It's just about justice. Solas and Morrigan come to care about people, and this makes them question what they're doing. And while they very well may and will still do it, they consider the consequences. In the end, Morrigan decides to have her Warden's support, and lets him stand by her side. I wonder if Solas will allow the same thing. I hope he does.

That is a really well thought out post! If you consider Redemption canon, then the blood ritual to contact Fen'Harel takes place on the Sundermount as well.

I do like the idea of the chantry explosion possibly waking him up. It would be a good way to frame his state of mind at the time, and why he might have taken some extremely rash actions.

I was getting at saying that because Fen'harel awakened, it caused Anders to blow up the Chantry, not the other way around. I do like having something to make Anders seem less of a horrible person for what he did, but that's not motivating my theory. It just seems like all of the Corphy/Fen'harel stuff is connected as far back as DA2, not just in Inquisition. Their dual locations near Kirkwall made the Veil so weak, it became the runner up to the Void, practically.

Musical DA:I 80's high school.  After Solas leaves, Lavellan sings along to a weepy Tiffany song.  Would pay boatloads of money.

I will just flip for ANY DLC. I want to change my girl's face! Here chin is all weird. (Sorry bebe I know I didn't change your face on the vallaslin but this is for your own good).  Frankly, I just want more fun times with the DA:I crew. I miss how wacky DA2 would get.  I could use more fun and happy times.  Too much angst.

I think Anders was going to do what he did no matter what, but there is something to be said over the weakened veil and Corypheus' wacky vibes wreacking more havoc over his already compromised mental state. He spent 10 years trying to advocate peacefully.  He was just going to break.

Dun dun dun! That is interesting. Falon'din is definitely the name that seems to come up the most. He and Dirthamen are the last two old gods if they are connected to one another. He's the one that was so strong that all the gods had to team up to beat him down.

The quote according to the wiki: "The prison is breached. I see the encroaching darkness. The... the shadow will consume all..."

Yeah. While I think it is definitely possible that the veil problems might have caused Justice to start to warp quicker, Anders was planning that explosion before the eclipse would have happened. He had Hawke go out and gather all the ingredients for his magebomb thing. So I don't know if you can absolve Anders of what he did.

Although it does confirm that Kirkwall continues to be the shittiest place ever.

Has anyone speculated on where Solas/Fen'harel was asleep all this time? I have to admit, I'm rather getting obsessed with his recent backstory....

<snip>

A full solar eclipse was probably taking place, but the game simply failed to mention it happening and/or the characters were too distracted to even take notice of it. It's Fen'harel awakening near Kirkwall, causing mages and the lone Red Templar to act like crazy freaks, I tells ya!

That's crazy, but also awesome. Now I want to go back through DA2 videos to see what the sky looks like.

In other news: I suck at Flycam, but here's a Solas anyway. I can't decide if the wolf mosaic looks hungry or amused.

@Meers - This is the one I was thinking of because I suddenly remembered that insane music video scene from the Jetsons movie where they are in the hologram forest.

Solas breaks me...

My little Trevelyan lass was takin' care of business out in Emerald Graves, with Cass, Solas and Cole in tow (because, duh), and we came near Din'an Hanin (or Elgarnan's Bastion), where Solas goes...

"My people built a life here ... it must have been something to see."

He's so sad in that moment, mourning the loss of his people, his culture, his history, all alone.  I imagine that the pause he takes to carefully consider his next words, so as not to give anything away, is met with a surge of once-dormant emotions. I can almost hear him swallowing down the bitterness.

Uggghhhhhhh.

He probably feels worse if you have Sera in the party when he says that, since she has a rude, mouthy comeback for it.

I wish my Lavellan realized what a lost cause Sera was before dragging her to every elven ruin in Thedas. -_-

That reminds me of the banter they have, where Solas says, "Our people used to be here," and she responds sort of like, "You always say that, but who wants to think about stepping on dead elves?" Solas replies angrily through his teeth in Elvish. I enjoy Sera in other contexts, but I was like "Ah, terrible!" The way he must feel thinking about that on his own even without teasing commentary... Poor thing.

Yeah, I don't take Sera with me anywhere "elfy", as I find her comments infuriating.  HOWEVER, that being said, every so often she'll say "The veil is <something funny> here."  I can't help but crack up.  I imagine my character shoots Solas a nervous sidelong glance, in which Solas replies with a grunt and rolls his eyes.

Oh, oops. Maybe that was the one I was thinking about.

Either way, it is sad. It must be horrible waking up to discover that everything you knew and loved is long dead and gone. (Even worse if you're responsible for it.)

I gotta admit though, my Lavellan's sympathy for his nostalgia of the past was aggravated by how he kept rebuking her efforts to empathize with him. When he wasn't bad-mouthing the Dalish for not understanding their heritage enough to properly connect with or mourn it, he was admonishing her for assuming they were the same just because they each have pointed ears. Meanwhile, the same "not elf" kept badgering Sera, of all people, to feel connected to "our people" because she happened to be born with pointed ears. While I now understand that he's an ancient elven god who only feels connected to other ancient elves like him, it's not clear to a player who hasn't seen or learned about the post-credits scene yet, or for an Inquisitor that's locked out of the loop.

Poor Solas, his laments of his people's lost past pretty much earned a "Would you make up your mind? Are we of the same people or not?" sideways glance from Lavellan.

Yeah, I don't take Sera with me anywhere "elfy", as I find her comments infuriating.

Ha, I wish my Inquisitor had the good sense to do so from the beginning. Like Solas, she wants Sera to not actively despise everything "elfy," but while Solas kept trying to badger it out of her, my Herald kept showing her their people's ruins and accomplishments, hoping to eventually illicit some sort of "this is not half-bad" or "maybe it's not all worthless" reaction out of her. Biggest waste of time. And unfortunately, it took until after the Temple of Mythal ("it's nothing but a pit of demons") for my Lavellan to finally realize that Sera was never going to see any value in anything "elfy" (worse, she doesn't want to) and finally just stopped taking her places.

HOWEVER, that being said, every so often she'll say "The veil is

<something funny> here."  I can't help but crack up.  I imagine my character shoots Solas a nervous sidelong glance, in which Solas replies with a grunt and rolls his eyes.

Sera only made me laugh twice in the whole game, and one of them wasn't even in my playthrough. (I saw it on Youtube.)

However, I imagine that each time Sera said something disparaging about elves in party banter with Solas (especially after rebuking his attempts to get her to connect with her people), my character would cat's grin at Solas and say something like, "Suddenly we Dalish don't look so bad, do we?" Which Solas would reply with a grunt and look away.

Rabbitonfire announced that she would be playing an old-skinned Trevelyan who'd romance Cullen.

THIS HAD TO BE MADE.

Lol!!! Will this be akin to my making an exceedingly ugly female character to romance Blackwall because I can't imagine romancing Blackwall any other way than turning the whole ordeal into a giant joke about how he prefers ugly women.

Heh. I'm not writing a fic (...yet), but the way I imagine it is, post-game, Lavellan continues to manage the Inquisition while following up some leads Leliana found for her by investigating several ancient elven ruins, which reveal pieces of the story of Fen'harel's "betrayal". Then, just as she's about to make the connection, Solas suddenly returns to Skyhold, bringing news that an even greater threat is on the horizon. In their subsequent conversation, Lavellan is able to ask some very pointed questions, and the whole story eventually comes out (Solas giving the orb to Cory and all). He turns away, convinced that Lavellan will now want nothing to do with him, but he feels a hand on his arm. Cue ridiculous hollywood kiss. *Is such a sap*

But in any event, I have a feeling that if/when there is a reunion, Solas isn't going to make the first move to rekindle the relationship unless Lavellan first shows him that she's still interested. This is a guy who is convinced that she's better off without him, and who is so closed-off that he has a very difficult time letting anybody in. After everything he's done, and everything he's done to her, I think he'd be rather surprised if Lavellan wanted to rekindle their relationship at all. Pleasantly surprised, of course, but he's not going to go in thinking that she still cares for him.

Jellobell, I love you. This idea is so pretty. I wish I could buy it dinner.
