I like mixd matches too, like zevran and fenris with mages, sometimes even human mages (well, sometimes with zevran, I mean  ), and I like pairing Solas with non-mages... it's just that I don't enjoy playing non-mages, so it's never going to be my canon. But I'd even romance him with a human if I could

As to who take with me to "find" Solas...a part of me would like to take the "original party", so Varric and Cass, with Cole. But It will be a bit problematic having one warrior and three rogue in the team

I've tried starting again with a non mage but I really haven't found it as much fun as playing a mage.   I went elf mage the first time because, apart from Solas, I thought it would be an interesting and challenging story arc because of the prejudices against elves and mages.   First run I kept using the traditional sort of party, one tank, one rogue, plus Solas and me.    However, after being told by fellow Solassian that this really isn't necessary, I'm replaying now often with 3 mages in the party, which has allowed for some fun exchanges with Vivienne and some interesting ones between Dorian and Solas.    Sometimes I do his in combination with just one tank, sometimes no tank and just Cole.     Due to our startlingly awesome mage power I'm actually finding this run through easier than my more traditional one.  Essentially though I just make sure that I use everyone eventually so I get to hear all the Solas conversations with other party members.     Solas and Dorian discussing magical technique is amazing even if much of the time I'm going "Huh?" because clearly being brought up as a Dalish mage I've missed out somewhere.

Incidentally, someone mentioned that Solas acknowledges if you take Rift Mage as your specialisation.   Well this time round I did but as yet he's said nothing.    Does he mention this to someone else or does he actually say something to you, and when?

So, one thing I'm curious about: Am I the only one who ended up making canon exhiling the Wardens just because Solas says it's best?  I know it doesn't say much about me having my own opinions and such  :D but I can't help feeling that he has more information about everything and since his opinions and preferences 99% of the times match my own, I have kind of assumed that I should trust his advice even in this case, where I'd have done otherwise... Don't you think he knows something more than he says he does about all that? Ordo you think I'm going to regret in DA4 leaving my fascination with Solas blind me?

I exiled them, but not just because of Solas.

In origins I favored rping a reluctant warden who was pretty horrified and disgusted from the moment Duncan killed Jory.   The city elf joined because she had to,  my dalish would have preferred to die and was conscripted against her wishes (although Zev turned it around for her) so my own player perspective has not really been pro-warden.  I am delighted with the idea that while buying the world time to end the blights once and for all, the wardens are also doing great damage.

In inquisition, to banish them, seemed to be a fairly supportable stance to take as they had proven themselves vulnerable to the influence of Cory.  Solas was also a trusted advisor so his opinion was held in high regard too.

Btw, about Rift mage no talk bug: I never tried it myself, but maybe you have to actually spend points in the specialization tree and/or use the skill in the field for Solas to talk to you?

(yes, I realize it's annoying/the specialization is useless to my particular play style and so on, but still, maybe that's the reason)

Merry (belated) Christmas everybody!!!

Sorry I'm late with the festive well wishing. Was too busy with all the food and drink and whatnot to consider O Baldy One. I'd like to think that, as an elf, he was busy helping Santa with all his chores. Oh wait...wrong elfs.

Hope you had a great one folks!

I did this and the war table mission. I also tried different specializations. He wouldn't comment at all.  I think companions not commenting on spec is a bug. Or it's really random which ones comment.

As a mages fan, I LOVE all those super technical discussions about magic between solas and dorian, which I take with me almost everywhere almost all the time, and I'm taking Vivienne with him for th first time in my current pt, and there's also a lot of those, and I'm also loving them. I never realized how little do the other mage companions from previous games discuss their abilities, though I guess the three in Inquisition are much more competitive (after all most of their discussions are always a little "I know more"  :P )

In my mind, once Lavellan reaches her height of her political power, she will have a painting made. Her on her throne sitting. A great black wolf on her right, with her hand gently on it's head.

This is my ridiculous power fantasy.

I actually went further than that.

I imagined Varric writing the Inquisitor's autobiography with the cover being Lavellan sitting in a throne (as well) & a big white wolf on her side with their foreheads touching. Also - Lavellan doesn't know whether to find the book's contents & cover amusing or disturbing.

I like the black wolf better though  =]

Morning!

It's back to work for me so back to a normal posting schedule. At least until Wednesday.

I rolled a warrior my first playthrough and romanced Cullen. I quit at Skyhold on my mage elf to redo her, and started on my canon PT human-Cullen-romancing mage instead. I'm just about finished with that one (105 hours in!) and will be starting my canon elf playthrough.

I'm thinking I'll roll a rogue archer so I can take Dorian and Solas everywhere. :)

Woke up to the sound of pouring rain....

ok not really..I woke up to this song playing in my head. Never has a fiction character invaded my heart and soul in the way that Solas has. Not only do I think about him every waking moment, but he invades my dreams as well.  Damn it, Patrick Weekes...you've created the most interesting man in the world...stay thirsty my friend!

I can't not play a mage anymore. That was always a problem in Origins, but the gameplay in this one is so tedious on PC that it makes anything else unplayable really. The story seems emptier, too. I also take three mage parties sometimes. Never had so much fun as Dorian + Solas + Lavellan mage + Morrigan fighting together in the Arbor Wilds.

And to your question, Solas is supposed to comment on any mage specialization you take but I've never had him do so in game.

I rolled a Dalish archer, and I didn't really feel like I was any lesser for doing so. I don't think it's a matter of which class is better as it is a matter of perspective.

Personally, I enjoy that my Lavellan is different from Solas in this aspect of herself. There's more curiosity to be had there, more things to share with each other, more things to learn about one another. In the same way that Lavellan is fascinated by Solas's effortless magic, Solas is fascinated by Lavellan's grace and precision in the battlefield. They throw arcane bolts and arrows in perfect harmony. Maybe shatter a bandit or two.  :D

Sorry for the double post. I always assume this thread moves so fast that by the time I read one or two replies, it's moved on a page or so.

And I do have to say, I prefer that they share the experience of being apostate mages, as it's a bond of its own, but I like the explanations of others' experiences. I've just played so many mages at this point that nothing else feels right.

Off topic question for anyone who didn't roll a mage for their first Solasmance (purposely or not).

Did anyone else reroll their Lavellan after hearing Vivienne tell her that "mages need the company of other mages?" I originally created a rogue to be the typical Dalish archer, but for some reason that line really struck a chord me. I know she meant it as platonically as possible, but the idea of it affected me enough that I immediately went nopenopenope, and created a mage Lavellan instead.

I kept myself so spoiler-free about DAI that I knew literally nothing about the companions, the romances, or anything about the story. All I knew about Solas was what was introduced through his dialogue in Haven, but after hearing that line from Vivienne I couldn't get the idea that yes, Solas would be really cool to try and flirt with as a mage, but more importantly he might be willing to share more of his self than with a non-mage who can't explore the Fade as he does. The lonely apostate who could (potentially. no romance knowledge) take my Lavellan on Fade adventures they would remember? Too good of an idea to pass up.

I did not feel the romance was any less poignant as a rogue archer.   I prefer playing rogues anyway and after going back to my human mage, the gameplay felt sluggish - so from a purely 'fun' standpoint I liked it more.  Also archer assassin is ridiculously op. The AI in the game is too stupid to figure out where you disappear to when you cloak.  Solas craves affection - that much is clear.  He finds a foothold with Lavellan due to her strength of character and intelligence and just jumps in.  The other stuff is ancillary.  Cassandra isn't a mage but he clearly respects her very deeply - so I don't think that stuff matters much to him.

Who says Shartan was Andraste's lover? Why is that even a thing?   Girlfriend had a lot going on I guess but geez. Husband, god lover AND elf bit on the side?

Still mesmerized by that screen shot... the cinematic designer deserves a lot of credit for getting them to walk-snuggle and hold hands and then kiss and butt grab without any clipping. Kudos. I think. Rotten bastards.

I love the entire sequence as they're walking hand in hand, and the way Solas says, "The Veil is thin here. Can you feel it on your skin, tingling?" - they're both just so relaxed and at peace and familiar with each other. <3 Agh, I just love it so much... What little interactions we get, the cinematic design and animations make up for in droves.

Of course, we could always use more interactions... in the future...

I didn't know if this is worth to start an new thread over, so I thought this is the most appropriate place to make this post. I have developed an entire thought out theory about Solas and his involvement with historical events.
