Ugh, I agree. I was so underwhelmed by her character, after being so excited at the prospect of meeting her. I was like, this is the woman Varric has been pining over for a decade and a half? Despite the fact that she's married? I felt like all those characters in Arrested Development... "Her?"

This makes me like the idea of the fade being an entity of its own even more. Or worshiped as one. Especially with the lyrium equals maker's tears in the fade stuff. The fade is the mind, and the earth is the body, split from one another.
 
I like to think what happened with the old gods is symbolic of this. Just headcanon.

Eh, I really can't see it, and I dislike that people take any cordial or warm interaction between a male and a female to have a sexual subtext. Not that that's what you're doing, but it happens so often that I can't help but think of it here. I see Solas and Cassandra as kindred spirits but on very opposite ends of a spectrum of belief. They're both faith warriors championing a better vision of the world and willing to kick over the tables of everything they hold dear and walk a path completely alone in order to do it. Any kind of romantic subtext would cheapen that dynamic, IMO.

I don't think saying they have chemistry together cheapens their dynamic at all. Flirting doesn't always have to be overtly romantic. People who get along really well often have a subtly flirty back-and-forth, like Dorian and a female Inquisitor. I agree that their interactions during the game are platonic, but Solas seems more comfortable with her than most of the other companions, and he shows that by loosening up around her. Do I think it would work given the events of the game and all of the context surrounding them? No. But if we're talking "in another world" then I can see them possibly growing close. Their personalities are very compatible.

True, but yea that's my running theory I'll be looking out for clues to prove.

 

It'd be deliciously ironic, with the chantry wanting it to return. Especially if that's what Solas is doing. With all the recent convergence of worlds talk, it sort of fits with the theme.

I don't think saying they have chemistry together cheapens their dynamic at all. Flirting doesn't always have to be overtly romantic. People who get along really well often have a subtly flirty back-and-forth, like Dorian and a female Inquisitor. To be honest, there were times I interacted with him that I thought he was putting the moves on me, lol. Solas is just cool with people he respects, and Cassandra is the same way. I think people read too much into that.

 

Could they be together if you stripped away the religious side of Cass and made her not care, and Solas with what he knows of the world and spirits, maybe. But then, they wouldn't be Cass and Solas.

I honestly don't think it is necessarily, but I look at it like Mass Effect 3's synthesis option. It's a change that I don't agree the world is ready for, nor should it be forced on us.

 

That's if that's what he wants to do in the first place, which I think there's enough there to assume not. Not yet anyway.

Personally, it's not that I necessarily believe whatever he's doing is going to be bad... I just recognize the possibility. I think, more realistically, whatever he'd planning will fit the 'greyness' of his character - as in, it's not exactly right or wrong, just depends on your perspective.

 

To give an example - what if his plan is, as some speculate, to bring down the Veil? Yes, you could say that's a terrible idea - think if the chaos! And mass panic! And spirits and demons, oh my! But... in the long term, would it really be so bad? How many victims has the ongoing, centuries-old conflict between mages and those who fear them taken? How many have died as a result of Exalted Marches, Templar abuses, villagers armed with pitchforks, desperate mages terrified of being found out, and so on? Think of all those amazing individuals with untapped potential locked up in towers where they can do no harm, sure, but they can't do any real good either. If everyone had magic, it wouldn't be so feared, and places like the Tevinter Empirium could no longer hold such a great advantage.

 

Or, as you said, it could be he wants to do something good, but his methods are going to lead to a whole lot being sacrificed to get there.

 

I think what worries people is the fact that he leaves, instead of asking the Inquisition to help. There must be something about his plan that he's convinced we would likely refuse aid, or try to stop him before he can even begin.

It's been specualted that it could be a case of literally not being able to go with him, we don't know where he's going. That's still a possibility.

This is a tidbit from a Bioware panel at PAX South about why Solas was added as a romance option.
The main speakers in the clip are Mike Laidlaw, Karin Weekes, and Patrick Weekes (over the phone at the end).

I tried (key word being tried) to write down the whole recording for anyone who might be deaf, hard of hearing, or just doesn’t want to listen to the audio.  It’s pretty long, though, soooo…

 

Solasmancer: Um, you mentioned earlier that Cullen, you added in Cullen later as a romance option and part of that was because everyone loved Cullen.  Um, I wanted to ask why you added your other option, Solas.  Because that was a very interesting one because later events cast that at, uh, add interesting context to that whole relationship so I’m curious why you added him versus another character.
Karin Weekes: You are, like, not the first person who’s asked me that question. I know who knows the answer to that question.  You wanna talk?
[Side note: I asked her that question earlier between panels. ]
Mike Laidlaw: I’m gunna talk.
K. Weekes: Are you sure?
Laidlaw: Sure
Laidlaw: Sooo.  There are people…

Laidlaw: Who.. unless you shatter their collarbone.. cannot be stopped from writing.  And even then cannot be stopped from writing—are you texting this to Patrick?

Laidlaw: Oh, okay….good.  As discussed.  We’ll see if he’s available.  So here’s the thing is that-that this—
K. Weekes: He’s probably getting pizza, but we’ll find out.
Laidlaw: Yeah, is that Mr. Weekes who is to blame, um, kind of just can’t be stopped.  Uh, he kinda declared one day that he had had an idea and had written most of it and he’s very fast and he’s pretty good and I think Karin is gonna see if he’s there.
K. Weekes: Aww that’s—
Laidlaw: Aw, too bad cause we really wanted to hold his feet to the public fire.
K. Weekes: Okay, I got his voicemail.
K. Weekes: [on phone] Hi! Guess where I am!  So some people have asked me why Solas became.. uh, how Solas became a romance option and they would, they would like to share their opinions with you right now.
[cheering]
K. Weekes: Okay, call me back if you’re home.  Ok, love you, bye!
Laidlaw: So, that’s, that’s kinda what happened. Um, he decided it would work and I decided it was pretty great and then we’d figure out if we could afford it.  And we just, we moved some stuff around and probably couldn’t’ve afforded it and there was some things and then we said ‘well what, what if it was only lady elves’.  And he said ‘that’s kinda what I wrote it for’ and I said ‘okay, well that was wise of you and, uh’.. because..
K. Weekes: As, as passionately emotional he is about stuff he’s really coldstone logic about stuff like that.
Laidlaw: Yeah, he is.  He’s like ‘no, the only way you’d ever be able to afford is if we only did’—well the other big thing is, um, so I will, I will let you in on a secret, which, this is completely tangential and non-Solas-related, is that whenever a characters are touching, uh, and whenever, uh, if you happen to have made a game where you have four different race heights, um, you have, you have made yourself a bad time.
Laidlaw: You have made yourself a very unfortunate event.  So, I don’t know if any of you were here earlier to hear Frank Gordon talking about dancing with the duchess and, and, and ranging that from male Qunari to female dwarf, which required no less than 8 completely different sets of animations for the duchess, right.  In terms of where her hands were, um, and probably is why we shipped on two discs.
Laidlaw: Uh, not really, but, ehh.  Um, it didn’t help.  Uh, anyways, so, so there are a lot of challenges so of course part of the thing that Solas did, and I think it was, it was very effective, there is that point where he touches your face.. and I’ll just leave it there, uh, and of course that was something where because it was, um, because it was a female elf, uh, that actually helped make it more affordable.  Um, that wasn’t the only reason we went there because a lot of it only really works in that context, so, again, spoilers—
K. Weekes: Yeah, it’s just this crazy ability to go okay yeah this makes logical sense and also like marries it to that so that you can’t argue against it.
Laidlaw: And you’re like well that, wow, that’s thematic and price affordable.
Laidlaw: You’re like, he’s, he’s like a Ford Taurus: reliable, comfortable, American built.  Except for the parts we outsource from Germany.
K. Weekes: I’m debating how to an—how to rebut this.
Laidlaw: Are you a Dodge lady or something?
K. Weekes: No! 
[Someone]: She’s just thinking ‘Taurus has horns’.
K. Weekes: He’s a, he’s a Taurus, actually.
Laidlaw: He is a Taurus?
K. Weekes: He is a Taurus, yeah.
Laidlaw: Oh yeah.

Laidlaw: Cool. And sometimes he crosses rivers.

Some Dude: So, I was wondering when writing these characters and defining them how do you avoid traps or how do you avoid pigeonholing yourself?

K. Weekes: [on phone] Hi.  How’s it going?
Laidlaw: You’re going to have to ask again.

P. Weekes: No, I think I’m going through a tunnel!  Sorry guys!
K. Weekes: No, but like really kind of, could you a little bit?
P. Weekes: [laughing]
K. Weekes: Well, Mike did a pretty good recap.  So… but like what, what about the writing process, cause he wasn’t a romance, right?  And so what, as you were writing him, made you feel like that was, uh, part of his character that was the way you intended to go?
P. Weekes: Well, I think it would have been really easy for Solas to just come off as too much of a villain.  And I really tried to take every step that I could to humanize him.  And part of that was making him more emotionally available in that way.  Um, and showing that he really, genuinely cared about you.  Um, and the other members of the Inquisition.  Uh, it’s one of the reasons he has such a close relationship with Cole, it’s one of the reasons, uh, that he, y’know, is so respectful of Cassandra even if he disagrees with her about a lot of things and it’s one of the reasons that we decided to make him a romance.
K. Weekes: Cool.

I kind of saw it as the opposite actually. I hate using the term 'Mary Sue' since it gets thrown out there a lot, but... it comes to mind with Bianca. She's a better smith than Branka, she 'gets' red lyrium better than almost every dwarf in the game, she's a better shot than Varric... and she has The Snark... I feel like they were trying to hit us over the head with how badass she's supposed to be, and it ended up leaving me completely cold. I would have actually liked her more if she was, in fact, completely ordinary (other than the whole genius engineer thing, obviously).

I don't know if I'd say she's a true Sue, or that we were intended to like her. She's the one who gave Corypheus the red lyrium, even if it was by accident. If you were to list a chain of people responsible for the monster that Corypheus became- she'd be right on that list along with Solas. Varric told her not to mess with the stuff, and she did it anyway. 

 

I'm not a fan of Bianca, but I don't know if we were intended to be. She's not a villain or anything, just...she screwed up, badly. And barely makes an attempt at fixing her mistake.

Same here. I felt rather unimpressed because the concept was forced. She was the hotshot. And because of that, I saw what happened coming on that mission from a mile away.
