Does anyone ever wonder if the reaction to Solas being heterosexual was so negative because we have been conditioned to expect elves to be either bisexual or gay?
So far every elf we've had (prior to Solas) wasn't heterosexual. In a way, he deviates from the typical "elf romance" trope. You know? Sorry to point this out, it just kinda dawned on me. I know people are upset, but I find it unique to have a heterosexual elf who is also a mage. Usually the straight ones are warrior humans (Cept for Morrigan and her mage-ness. heheh)
I don't think that's the reason at all. It's more because people wanted equal numbers of options. (Depending who is gated and how, if you factor in Iron Bull having been intended to be gated, well... it may have originally been the case--particularly if Cullen is gated. Solas may have been available only because elven women might not have an option for a male romance otherwise. We don't know.)
Hah, words from my mouth. The only times Fenris was friendzoned, were when I was playing male Hawkes, who tried to romance Anders or Merrill. But somehow Hawke's LIs in these playthroughs ended up on a bench, and I've been running around in the company of Fenris and Isabela (I adore their relationship, too).
I really hope that the reason of gating is not breeding. I won't romance Solas on principle, then. Not that I'm against babies, but I don't want it to be his reason for falling for my Inquisitor.
I repeat, most straight people don't go into a relationship specifically to breed with that person. Why would Solas? It might come up in mention after the fact, but we know there won't be marriage or kids even in the ending, so if it's a factor at all it will probably be a very minor one.
[DA]: In addition to dealing with the world’s perception of mages, he’s also elven. How does he deal with that much adversity?
[PW]: Honestly, Solas hates people who look at him and just see an elf. He considers that kind of attitude part of the black-and-white dichotomy that has led to so much tragedy in theDragon Age world. Templars versus mages, demons versus spirits, elves versus humans… it’s more complicated than that. Come to think of it, “It’s more complicated than that,” may actually be Solas’s battle cry.
And yet he has no problem with himself having that mindset. Hypocrite.
Or, maybe, just maybe, there are other reasons that he'd only be into elves. He's straight because he's straight (the writers chose to do this for reasons unknown to me; however I speculate that it means the final gated romance is Cullen and, had Iron Bull also remained gated, straight female elves would have ended up lonely). Even if he were only attracted to elves, that would be a good enough reason. More likely it's something tied into story, lore, etc. It doesn't mean he's dismissing others out of hand because they aren't elves, only that he's not into them romantically. That's not hypocritical at all. He can still be friends, confidantes, etc. with other races.
It isn't narrow-minded for an elf to want to have elven children, since it's impossible to have children with anyone outside his species.
If he wants to have children one day, I doubt he'll have an adverse reaction to an elven woman leading the Inquisition whom he isn't romantically involved with.
There's no true parallel to human racism over ethic differences when you're taking about two different (albeit fictional) species co-habitating the same continent.
Correction, Solas could have children with a non-elf, but they wouldn't be elven children. I don't think it's selfish or narrow-minded not to want your species to die out, though.
I don't believe it's about having kids or not though--and I don't think Solas is going to be heartbroken if the Inquisitor won't romance him. As others mentioned he doesn't seem that bothered by romance, or people in general.
And yes, I agree--human races aren't the same as races in Thedas, which are effectively different species. They still have ethnic groups--Anders, Fereldan, Rivaini, Tevinter, etc.
It may very well be problematic that Solas was written as restrictively as he was, but if I turn out to be right about Cullen being race-gated, well... it will make a whole lot more sense then, taking into account that Iron Bull was going to be.
Blah. I liked this thread much more when people were less gloom-and-doom and were not hating on Solas...
