I was going to mention that about his scar..I hope they didn't get rid of his scar I loved it,and his adorable butt chin!  :unsure:

EDIT: I still think he's Handsome I was just so used to the older pic with his scar and dimple. :D

...
Where is his scar?
His cute buttchin?
WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR CUTE LITTLE THINGS? DO I NEED TO ERASE IT FROM MY PICTURES?

I'm curious about how today's information has affected everyone's opinions on potential romances (or just Solas in general). Like...my first pick was Cullen (loved him since DAO) but now my first playthrough is definitely going to be Solas if he's a LI.. Anyone else in the same boat? I've always had Cullen and Solas as my two favorite options in the game.. I'm just surprised how much Solas has edged out Cullen :D

If he isn't a romance, who are you going to go for instead? Did anyone have zero interest in him before the new info but now are considering him as an option? Or is he just going to be a bro to your inquisitor and you aren't interested in a romance with him (if there is one)?

I'm going to cry. That's what I'm going to do.
Probably eat an ice cream cone.
And then when I'm done with crying I'll romance Sera.

Possibly Iron Bull or Blackwall if they're LI's instead of Solas. Still cry though.

Solas is most definitely my number one. If I can't have him (TRAGEDY), I'll go for either Cullen or Iron Bull with either a female Qunari mage or a female elf mage. Then I'll probably go for Sera with a female Qunari because I love the idea of that dynamic! I'll probably roll a male elf rogue eventually and either go for Dorian or Iron Bull again if he isn't race-gated against elves.

If Solas isn't a LI, I'll prolly romance my female elf with him. Both are really interesting to me! But the thought of little elf babies is hard to resist!!

//quietly lurks away now as he draws some elfy fan art.

MESSAGE POPULAIRE !

For those who are interested, we have been very calculated when it comes to engineering our characters imperfections. The development process has a built in erosion mechanism: many stakeholders in many review meetings tend to trim away a characters humanizing flaws and oddities, leaving little more than "pretty" and "safe" . Strip and shave most game characters today and you'd be hard pressed to tell most of them apart. We've worked very hard on Inquisition to safeguard our characters from this erosion process. We want to give them more identity than just their clothes, hairstyle and makeup. It's our hope that after you've spent some time with them, our character's will be as inseparable from their quirks, flaws and oddities as your own friends and family are from theirs.

If he's unavailable to my male Dalish mage, he'll be romancing Cassandra instead.  My party lineup is going to be Solas/Cass/Cole in any event.  :P   Solas has always been my first choice, but if it isn't meant to be, they'll be best buds instead.

Did Matt Rhodes just come into the Solas thread and told us about their process of developing characters? *blink* Well what do you know :)

Nevertheless thanks for telling us this. It's great to see the variety in apearances in characters.

Edit: And I agree the flaws of the characters are what defines them. Makes them look more or less how you would imagine them. Makes them feel real. People who complain will most likely get used to their appearance after some time of interacting with them and come to like the characters' features. That's kind of why I find the characters that much better in Inquisition. Perfect models have been overused so it is nice to see a change in pace.

That is just my take on it though. Of course there will be those who prefer a different approach and I can respect their opinions.

Before today, my first choice was Cullen, because I've liked his character for a while now and was extremely excited he would be an LI. Solas was a very probable 2nd choice, because going off the little info we had i strongly suspected I'd like him.

Now, though, i think he's actually edged out Cullen as my first choice. From what we know about him now, he sounds, personality-wise, like everything I could hope for in an LI, and id I'd be really disappointed if he weren't. Still, I'm fortunate in that I'm still really looking forward to romancing Cullen, so there's that. And I'll just have to content myself with having Solas as my default mage and friend

Okay, so, some of you remember how I had a rather epic Solas dream a few weeks back, where Part 1 was a party camp night scene and Part 2 was a high dragon fight with my Inquisitor trying to free Solas from the dragon's mouth right when my alarm clock rudely ended everything?

I kinda sorta made a thing. Haven't written in quite some time and only just recently has the muse started to return. Today's awesome influx of info - a lot of it which confirmed the small bit of mental image I have in my head of what Solas may be like - made me think about that dream again, so I dabbled a little for fun. Pretty rough, largely exposition (don't feel comfortable attempting banter when we don't really know how these folks sound like or what their speech patterns are), but I think it came out a bit cute and wanted to share. Some of the "Big Happy Family" comments about Solas and Cole also inspired it.  :)

Solas had not gotten very far into the Fade when a rather abrupt, raucous peal of laughter tore through his ears. He shot up, then took a moment to compose himself as the sudden adrenaline surge worked its way out of his system. For so long he had wandered the world in solitude, sleeping alone. He'd trained himself to wake at any nearby sound or disturbance in case of danger, such as an approaching predator - of either the animal or human variety. Now, though, as a volunteer of the Inquisition, it was a skill proving to be detrimental while surrounded by others.

Particularly when those "others" preferred to drink and socialize when he wanted to sleep.

Pinching the bridge of his nose with a deep sigh, Solas grabbed his staff and his journal and crawled out of his tent. If he couldn't walk the Fade just yet, at least he could read about it. The elf let a small stream of magic flow into the stave, just enough to bring out a bit of light, and planted it into the ground. Then, he sat down cross-legged and leaned back against a tree, opening up his journal and turning to the most recent section he'd been penning.

Another howling bellow of baritone Qunari mirth assaulted him. Furrowing his brow, Solas glanced up in time to see the Iron Bull clapping the Inquisitor on the shoulder while she grinned ever so mischievously. 'Ah,' he thought, 'she must be on a roll again.' He snorted, imperceptibly shaking his head. He supposed the only reason she dragged him along as opposed to Sera was because of his Fade knowledge; after all, she and Sera shared a rather unusual adoration for crude and often sexual humor. He must seem positively boring to travel with in comparison. And for some reason Solas couldn't quite place his finger on, that thought saddened him slightly.

At just that moment, the Inquisitor glanced over in his direction. Her face was lit up both by the campfire and the radiance of her smile, always genuine and heartfelt. Something rare to find these days, especially when it was given to someone who was both an elf and a mage. And then Solas realized she was looking at him overly long and that he, too, was gazing at her for an uncomfortable length of time, and he quickly averted his eyes back down to his journal and pretended to look engrossed in his study, hoping fervently that the warm feeling flushing his cheeks would be difficult for her human eyes to detect this far from the light of the campfire.

"Inquisitor!"

Solas glanced up at Cole's voice.

"Hey, Inquisitor!" Cole called, running over from the treeline opposite the camp. "What are those flying things over there?" He pointed toward a few, flickering specks of light. "They're not wisps, but they're sort of like them, too, you know?"

"Well, Cole, let's have a look, shall we?" the warrior answered, placing her flask on the ground and standing up to follow the spirit.

The elf watched them surreptitiously, glancing back down whenever it looked like one of the other party members might turn in his direction. While most understood why he had a fascination with a Fade spirit made manifest, he didn't exactly want to give away that he was becoming equally fascinated with the Inquisitor - with the human who didn't seem to notice pointed ears, with the warrior who didn't appear prejudice towards benevolent creatures from the Fade, with a person who was almost as equally curious and open-minded as he.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Inquisitor quickly saw what had Cole so excited, and she couldn't help but chuckle. After all, the little insects flying, dancing, and blinking about had captivated her as a child as well.
"They're fireflies, Cole."
"Fireflies?" he asked, wrinkling his eyebrows and nose in confusion. "They aren't on fire, though."
She laughed openly now. "No, no, not literally flies made of fire," she explained. "They just look that way to folks, and I guess the name stuck."
"Do they bite?"
The Inquisitor shook her head. "No, they're perfectly harmless." Then, she crouched slightly, eyeing one of the creatures, and then pounced forward and quickly clasped her hands together.
"Did you squish it?" he asked, sounding rather alarmed.
She raised an inquisitive eyebrow at him and grinned slyly. "What do you think?" she asked, holding her clasped hands close to her chest. "Is the firefly dead? Or alive? Or does the potential for both suddenly exist in this current uncertainty?"
Cole gave her a confused stare. "You've been drinking from your little metal cylinder again, haven't you?"
Iron Bull, obviously eavesdropping, broke out into deep laughter at that.
The Inquisitor couldn't help but join in. After a moment, she smirked and shrugged her shoulders. Then, she made a throwing motion towards Cole while opening her hands, and out flew the firefly blinking and shining in front of the spirit's surprised face. He started to laugh along with the other two before running off to chase after the fireflies, determined to catch one, too, just like the Inquisitor had.
As Cole ran off and the Iron Bull gazed into the campfire seemingly lost in thought, the warrior ambled over to Solas and sat down next to him. "Is this seat taken?" she asked, shooting him her signature smirk.
The elf glanced over briefly. "No, go ahead," he answered quietly before returning once more to his journal.
They sat in amiable silence for a while. Then, looking between Solas's reading and Iron Bull at the campfire, she said, "I'm sorry if we woke you up. I'm not sure either of our mouths have a decent volume control on them."
Solas looked up at Iron Bull for a moment, then turned to consider the Inquisitor. "No, it's all right. I'll get used to it. Eventually."
She ducked her head in embarrassment and a bit of shame. "Sorry..." She scratched at her shoulder self-consciously. "Soooo... what's it like, walking the Fade? Is it like being in control of your dreams or something?"
He paused, then shut the book and set it down.
"I'm sorry," she said again, suddenly looking uncomfortable. "I probably should just leave you alone. I mean, you were trying to read and here I am being all rude and running my mouth non-stop and --"
"-- you're fine, it's fine," he responded quickly. "It's just... hmmm, it's complicated. And especially hard to explain since you don't experience the Fade as I do when you sleep... or as any mage does, truthfully."
The Inquisitor blushed slightly and looked down at her left hand with the faint green Fade glow. It was incredibly awkward having a piece of the Fade seemingly a part of her and having consciously closed Tears, but having no recollection of ever entering it in her dreams as the mages did. Not to mention that the only dreams she even remembered at all lately had started to involve him. Not to mention that part of her wondered if those were really dreams or if the elf had more conscious control of the Fade and the sleeping world than he let on...
As she stared at her scarred hand, Solas reached down and tentatively placed his hand on top of hers. Feeling her heartbeat quicken, the Inquisitor looked up into his eyes. It appeared as if he wanted to say something, clenching and unclenching his jaw a few times as if working up the courage.
"Hey, look, you two!" Cole exclaimed, running up to the pair. The spirit opened his clasped hands and several fireflies started blinking about in the air before them. "I caught them!"
Solas turned a bit pink and quickly yanked his hand back, then busied himself looking at Cole instead. "Would you look at that," he remarked. "Well done, Cole."
The moment broken, the warrior felt a pang of regret. Then, she smiled up at Cole and, as she always did, moved along. She patted the ground next to her and said, "Sit down for a while and join us, won't you?" The spirit broke out in a wide grin.
Also, I meant to add, I actually prefer the 'un-fixed' Solas in the comparison images. The fixed version is better looking, sure, but he's also a bit generic, in my opinion.
This is awesome! I can't say how many times I see "art" which is obviously just, say, the default Blender model altered a bit. Do you mind if I ask a little about how you approach the imperfections? Are they modeled by hand or is there a script which comes into play? Is this happening at the modeling stage or is it planned very early on by the concept artists?
(I'm imagining developers around a table looking at multiple procedural models and deciding which imperfections suit the character "Oh, this scar is interesting" "I like the crooked nose")
Thank you for stopping by! I'm super interested in process information (especially character, as that's not really my area), but don't feel pressed to answer any of my questions. I'm just talking shop, haha.
Whoever said they were entranced by Solas's hands, I'm totally with you. I'm impressed by how much better hands look in DAI! To be blunt, DA2 hands were just.....
0m4rSI4.jpg?1
Haha I'm the other hand-lover :) Bethany's hands were nightmarish, but Solas has some sexy fingers going on.
About Solas' village, I bet he grew up there and left to roam, find forgotten ruins, and study the Fade, so I could see him having had a semi normal life. Also he doesn't have to be a virgin just because he's been alone so long, he could've had a girl or boy back home when he was young.
Thanks for taking the time to answer.
I really really appreciate the work (and probably the fighting for having something different)
But still think Solas face looks slightly off.I'll get used to it...and I'm guilty of being 100% shallow.
I mean the Iron Bull doesn't have a pretty face , but I still think he looks great.
Just something about Solas face in the last screenshot rubs me the wrong way.
Anyway thanks again , I don't want to sound ungrateful.I know people are working really hard .
There's tons of stuff i've seen so far I really really love.
So, am I being naive to hope that means his scar will still be around in the game? I just really don't want to tell T (my five year old son) that the scar got removed. It's the first thing he will notice and comment on if it's missing from a piece of fanart. And I thought it added a nice dose of personality, aside from it being an identifying mark betwixt him and my son. (To give the quick version of the backstory to this, my son has a Very similar forehead scar and was very self conscious about it until the first screenshot of Solas where you could see his arrived and I read him all the complements people around the Solas thread had for the scar/him. Posting about that to the thread lead to more goodness from the other forumites themselves, as well. We really have a wonderful group here!)
But, yes, THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!...sorry, I couldn't help myself.
Hmmm... the interview is missing now (maybe they didn't mean to put it up until tomorrow?) But, I have to say that I am getting a bit of a young Leonard Nimoy Spock vibe off of him now, especially in the screen capture where he is casting in a snowy village. Not bad, not bad at all.  :)
I'm curious about how today's information has affected everyone's opinions on potential romances (or just Solas in general). I've always had Cullen and Solas as my two favorite options in the game.. I'm just surprised how much Solas has edged out Cullen :D
I fall into the category of "zero interest before the new info" boat. Back when we had nothing to go on but appearances, his looks didn't particularly raise my interest in him. I didn't think he was unappealing but it was hard to imagine anything with his simple design.
Now with this new info, I'm genuinely intrigued by his character! I've always connected best with characters who were intelligent and knowledgeable, more so if they were introverted. I was a very big Thane fan before I got into the DA series and Solas seems to strike some similarities with him, in that he prefers for his actions to speak for themselves.
I'm also incredibly interested in his connection to the Fade. The fact that he's completely self taught in his knowledge of magic and the Fade really peaks my curiosity, especially since each of those things are tied to dreams and events from the past. I've always been an observant and introspective person myself when it came to dreams and visions, so I look forward to many lengthy conversations with him.
As a romance, if he even is a romance, I have no idea! I'm hoping if he is that he'll be a completely new experience, since I can't think of a single romance from past Bioware games that he could possibly be similar to.
Thanks so much for stopping by, Mr. Rhodes! I think it's awesome when we get to hear the reasons behind things straight from the mouths of the devs, even for something like character appearances.
I'm glad that you all were able to retain some creativity and stop some of the usual stripping. I'll appreciate every flaw in every character even more now!
Haha, same here! I was like, "wait, where's that from? Oh! Oh cool!"
I've said this a few times on the forums, but I think the character designs are amazing, and all of them are gorgeous! I'm an artist myself (someday maybe I'll get off my lazy ass and make some fanart for you lovely people) and have struggled with the temptation to draw a pretty person, when an interesting one makes for a better piece.
