SpoilerHe is Fen'Harel. Tho is also seems like everything the Dalish believe about Fen'Harel is wrong - not a trickster god who imprisoned the others for a laugh, but the god of rebellion, who imprisoned them because he thought that would be what's best for the elves. Then he woke up thousands of years later to find out that ended up harming his people instead, so he wants to fix his mistake.
He gave the orb to Corypheus because he was too weak to power it up again. The orb was the key to the Eluvian he sealed the other gods in, so now that it's been destroyed, he can't. tho we all think that the power is now in the Inquisitor, so he'll have to come back for the Inquisitor someday.
It's up for debate whether he "killed" flemeth by taking mythal's power from her, or if he willingly let Mythal into his body (thus "killing" flemeth's body) - but the assumption is that whichever happened, he did as part of his attempt to find a new way to release the old gods.
Ahh it makes sense now why he was so upset the orb was destroyed, I was confused at that scene. Also if Flemeth is still alive, her body looked pretty damn strange after he took the souls. The crazy thing is what he did greatly harmed his People (or maybe they did it to themselves? I remember in the Well of Sorrows Quest, the Elf in charge, forget his name, said they started fighting among themselves). I've always wanted to help the Elves, ever since Origins so I was kind of glad to get more lore on the subject even though it was not entirely clear to me and we were left with more questions than answers. What did the Old Gods do for him to imprison them like he did? and what does he plan to accomplish by restoring them? So does this mean Solas is the big bad? Because if we get a DLC or an expansion about the Inquisitor having to deal with her "lover" who wants to revive the Old Gods, on top of what you said having the key absorbed into her mark? Here comes the angsty drama!!! Damn. Thank you for the summary!
