The ones in the Hinterlands are being controlled by a demon, so you have to kill the demon to free the wolves. I brought Cole/ Solas along the first time I completed this quest. I forget exactly what he said, but Cole was talking about it being good to free the wolves. I think he said something about how the wolves felt, controlled by the demon. I think Solas chimed in, too, in response to Cole's comments.

I'm not convinced that it's the orb directly affecting the wolves. I think in areas where the wolves are unnaturally aggressive, it's caused by demons.

Personally, I think they're just reusing the wolf models from the Hinterlands (when you see those green-eyed wolves in other maps). And the Hinterlands wolves have green eyes due to demon possession/ control.

But of a party pooper here, but: That one pack had its pack leader possessed by a demon, actually. That's the in-story reason they were behaving so aggressively. They don't tend to be any more aggressive than the other predators populating the maps, otherwise. Aside from that though, I agree that the wolves are colored really oddly. Their fur and eyes were one of the first things I noticed when I was let loose in the Hinterlands for the first time (especially the eyes, holy bologna). It would be interesting if there were some sort of connection.

 

Granted, this is a world with dragons and dragony bison things. It could be that. But rift wolves are interseting, too.

Oh, I know there was a demon in that particular case. The black, green-eyed wolves are everywhere, though, not just in the Hinterlands. And even if the rifts aren't doing it directly, the demons were brought through by the rifts. Also, I still find it significant that the wolves seem to be the only creatures affected in this way, and that they all have the same, unusual color along with green eyes that actually glow. I even seem to remember them being labeled as "black wolf" as though that would be something somehow different from a regular wolf.

RE: Wolves

Of course, you could be correct, and they certainly threw in a ton of those wolf/ dog statues all over the place as well. Between those statues and the "black wolves," you can barely turn around without seeing a some imagery reminiscent of Fen'Harel. Especially in the Exalted Plains. So I could see them using wolves to troll us, I guess.

 

But I don't think that Solas/ Fen'Harel necessarily controls wolves, either directly or through his orb. I do think wolves are linked to Fen'Harel throughout his lore, much as the other deities have their own representative animals. And he may have a wolf form, like how Flemythal can become a dragon (which seems to be her representative animal). I don't think the Elven gods are anything more than powerful, ancient mages, so I just don't see why wolves would necessarily start going crazy just because Solas woke up/ the orb was used. Whereas having them going crazy due to demon activity makes more sense to me.

 

But it's an interesting theory, and I have seen other people talking about it in the thread, so you're not alone in thinking this!

Also, the Solas romance has driven me to write my first fanfic in years. Well, a combination of the Solas romance and all of his lovely nerding about the nature of magic and memory and the Fade. Which made me wonder about that whole sympathetic magic thing. And how a mage could conceivably be a Combat Historian in the Dragon Age universe which is the coolest and most nerdy thing ever.

 

So, uh, yeah. This is set after the end of the game (Solas is not actually there) and stars a mage Lavellan.

“Nowhere to run, Inquisitor.”

 

Mocking laughter from the Venatori mage standing above her. Lavellan could hear the sounds of battle. Dorian and Vivienne reinforcing each other’s barriers, desperately trying to conserve their magic for one last push. Cole surrounded by four Venatori, pinning him in place. They would not be able to reach her in time.

 

The blow had taken her by surprise, and she had been on her knees before it had even registered. She looked up into the face of the man who was preparing to kill her, his eyes full of triumph. A whisper of memory tickled the back of her mind and, inexplicably, she found her thoughts wandering. She heard a voice, as dear to her as any she had ever known.

 

It is called Veilfire. The tone was warm, patient. She recalled the words so easily. A memory of flame that burns in this world where the Veil is thin. Her eyes were drawn down to the ground. Earth, cracked and dry. But had it always been that way? Her head hurt, but she seemed to remember… Yes, a passage from a history of the region that she had skimmed while hiding in the library. This place had once been different.

 

The Venatori mage brought her back to reality with a kick to the stomach, obviously displeased at her calm. Lavellan gasped, looking up once again. Their eyes met. Then she grinned. The mage took a step back, but he was not quick enough. A torrent of water burst from the ground under his feet. The geyser flung his body into the air like a rag doll, flying in an arc before falling with a sickening crunch. Lavellan rose to her feet, turning just in time to see three more Venatori charge her. A second column of water downed them all, and in an instant she was joined by her allies. The remnants of the Venatori patrol did not stand a chance.

 

After it was over, Vivienne and Dorian approached their Inquisitor. Dorian clucked sympathetically over Lavellan’s head wound, but Vivienne gave her an odd look. When she finally spoke, she seemed to be choosing her words carefully.

 

“That spell, dear. I have never seen anything like it.” Lavellan looked up, blinking away dizziness. Vivienne continued. “And I was sure you had depleted your mana during the fight.”

 

“It…I read about it in a book.”

 

“The spell?”

 

“No.” Lavellan shook her head, then winced. “This place, it’s a dry lakebed. A century ago we would’ve been underwater. So I simply…drew that memory from across the Veil.” She smiled wanly. “It’s the same principle as when we fix a bridge.” Cole, silent as ever, appeared beside her.

 

“It remembers,” he said in that quiet way of his, a note of approval in his voice. “It wants to change.”

 

“How utterly fascinating.” Dorian’s eyes shone with interest, but Vivienne looked disturbed.

 

“You know, dear, you are beginning to sound like…” Lavellan’s heart gave a sick little squeeze, and there was a rushing in her ears. Cole moved towards her, feeling that raw pain, but she waved him away.

 

“We, ah, should be getting back to camp,” Dorian said, obviously sensing her change in mood as well. “Discussions on the principles of magic can wait until you get that awful-looking goose-egg seen to.” Lavellan gave him a grateful smile.

 

Before they left, however, she spared one last look for the fallen Venatori.

 

“Ma serannas, Vhenan,” she whispered. “You saved me again.” And as she turned away, the air behind her seemed to ripple.

 

Ar lath ma, Vhenan. Like the lake, the words would always be there. He was not gone, so long as she remembered him.

I'm not sure, but there is a dialogue where Solas chastises Blackwall after the truth is revealed.  I don't have the dialogue on hand (or can find it), but Solas no longer respects him- he used to think they had something in common, but it turned out to be a lie.

Agreed. Or hell, certified spots where you could trigger dialogue like the other games. I swear the people in Lothering must have thought my Wardens crazy because I'd drag everyone I received at that point across that one bridge until every single dialogue I got could fired. xD

 

Mhm, I was afraid they weren't as well. You can practically feel the hurt in Blackwall's voice when he asks Solas why he hasn't been speaking with him. Yet Solas owns up to it, in his own manner, and the two of them seem to be on the path to getting back their previous camaraderie.

I must confess I haven't really explored any other Dragon Age media outside the games... *hangs head in shame*, but that's pretty cool looking.
