Banal nada, it's not inevitable that his goals will be in conflict with Thedas as a whole. It's really time that the elves come in from the cold and establish New Arlathan, an elven homeland.

That's what I think Solas' goal is, in terms of mortal elves (his purpose probably being somehow standing vigil in a spiritual sense). Why should that be incompatible with everyone else? Especially since there are hints that in the distant past, even Tevinter and the ancient elves worked together. However, he naturally can't take for granted that the Inquisitor will accept this, or forgive him for his deception and his role in creating the Breach.

 

I don't think it's inevitable, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if that's more or less how it'll be. Again, I see him as a morally grey character who believes his own goals to be noble, but the foreshadowing would indicate that achieving those goals won't be done without victims along the way.

 

I don't have any romantic investment in him so that's obviously something I don't share with a lot of the posters here, but I think him being "forced" into opposing the Inquisitor by fate/duty/his own beliefs would make for a great, meaty story. I mean sure, it would involve a lot of feels but isn't that what keeps us playing these games?

I also think that whatever there to come will make the inquisitor fight him. Something he said in the final scene that stood out to me was
I Don't Want To Lose You - > I Believe In Us - > "No, we can't. You'll see. I'm sorry."

As in "I already know you'll be my enemy later and we can't be together"

Possibly there would be an option to attack him/ get revenge, and if we end up with a Wolf Hunt expansion then I hope there is that option for people who want to pursue it. If we're railroaded into opposing him, that's not going to sit well with me. I don't see that, personally. His goals are noble, sort of (I don't think he's a conventional paladin by any means), and your elf PC might very well agree with his stance.

I think he's suggesting that if circumstances were different, their relationship could have worked out not that he can't love her for not being a spirit.

The Inquisition inadvertently results in the destruction of Haven. Innocents may get hurt, sure, but I generally play grey characters anyway, so I'm hoping for options that are more varied than that. Obviously part of it is that I want Lavellas to have a happy ending, but I also want Solas to have a shot at succeeding at what he's trying to do. "The People need me"... and they could benefit from Lavellan using her influence for them, too.

Oh no, I didn't mean physically attack him, even though I agree with you that the option might be one a lot of people would want. Like JobacNoor said, I think Solas will end up as our enemy even if our Inquisitor might be an elf since on the big scale since his goals conflict with the majority of Thedas and everyone who lives there.

Had this flash of a mental cutscene where Solas actually is dying. Perhaps mortally wounded in whatever endeavor he's embarking on. And he uses the last of his remaining strength to seek out Lavellan in the Fade. Too see her and be with her one last time. So that he doesn't have to die alone.

It was only later that I discovered that he actually has good intentions and wants to right things he did wrong. Which is pretty noble - he obviously cares deeply about The People. I'm pretty sure he will set things in motion that shape DA's future. Maybe an elf rebellion is next, and depending on how you position yourself, your goals align with Solas' or not.

How do you know your Lavellan will agree with his goals when you don't know what his goals are or what he's willing to sacrifice to achieve them?

It helps me that Solas says he's more bold in the Fade, because I'd like to think of my Lavellan that way too. I was resistant to her making the first move physically but since that's the only way to romance him ( ) I just imagine that she'd do things in the Fade she'd be too shy to in the waking world. And the first "real kiss" is started by him after his personal quest.

 

I like that she initiated the first kiss. Maybe that's because of how I am. I'm impulsive when I really like someone.

But I think we can be reasonably sure Solas won't die and if we ever see him again, it won't be a happily ever after. Metagaming reasons:

- they aren't going to kill Fen'Harel.

- he is called He Who Hunts Alone for a reason.

So the best we can hope for is, they send the Inquisitor away somewhere after the third game and they see each other from time to time, but THEN she grows old, and in some ways it's even worse than another obvious solution - she dies(it must be even better than a Fade quest, though. I don't know, maybe covering Solas and her friends from crazy Anduril as they run through yet another mirror?). Making the Inquisitor a minor elven deity would be just too cheesy, I guess.

 

I want to replay DA:O with my Dalish Warden. Oh, I wonder if Solas would've approved the Dark Ritual and Zathrian's choices. Actually, I think he'd hate Zathrian's choice - enslaving a spirit like that would sound monstrous to him. And as for the Dark Ritual... who knows? I'm probably thinking not, because it means that a child has no choice whether to accept one more "passenger" into himself, and that's bad, too.

Yeah... I just don't see this. Maybe you can explain why you think they'd be opposed to much of anyone, let all of Thedas.

Blackwall's the one who brought that up. Solas is kind of defensive so maybe he did, maybe he didn't.

Solas was a huge surprise for me, I didn't expect that this character that didn't really have a huge amount of hype pre-release would end up as one of my favorite characters in the entire series so far by the time I finished my first playthrough. Superbly written and the VO is excellent, he'll probably end up being one of the best antagonists BW has ever done in the future. At least I think he's going to be an antagonist. Not necessarily in the "mustache twirling villain" sense, but as someone whose goals are in direct conflict with the players and probably the majority of the world of Thedas as a whole, goals that he fully believes in and sees as the right thing to do. His sad parting words of "whatever happens, know that I respect you deeply" would indicate whatever he's planning isn't good news for the Inquisitor, and though he regrets it, he sees it as something he has to do.

Interesting. I was wondering what he said to a non-romanced inquisitor. To my Lavellan, he said, "no matter what happens, know that what we had was real."

I like when Lavellan is hesitant about having her marks removed and he says, "I'm so sorry for causing you pain. It was selfish of me. I look at you and I see who you truly are, and you deserve better than what those cruel marks represent." It really is her choice in the end.

I think apart from the obvious charm the character has (my god he is so sweet!) the thing I love most about the character is the rhythm he talks in. I know Weekes (I think) made jokes about how Solas speaks in some kind of meter on twitter before release, but only when I started talking to Solas did I notice how extremely well done this is, to the point where you instantly recognize

I'm constantly amazed by it - it's a perfect combination of superb writing and delivery by the VA. It is really, really perfect and I really hope we'll get to hear a lot more from him (and I don't say that only because you know, more Solas is always good!).
