I would say with fair certainty Solas will end up an antagonist at some point. There's simply too much foreshadowing that his plans are going to be in direct opposition to the Inquisitor. 

 

But I am hoping very much that we can convince him off whatever path he's on. Not so much because 'he has to be one of the good guys!' but I legitimately get the sense that he doesn't want to be on this path. He's tied himself to it because he thinks that the greater good will ultimately prevail because of it. 

 

That said, I am not sure if Solas would be the only antagonist we'd be up against should they do a 'Wolf Hunt' style DLC. Maybe it is just me hoping for a small bit of redemption, but it does feel as though there are other players involved here.

Someone said like twenty pages ago that Solas struggles with mitigating factors and that made a lot of sense to me.

 

He's also confusing because he seems to hate all the current races. At the same time, he cares deeply about people in general. I wonder if that ever gets confusing for him.

 

Theres a lot to this. Because Solas is very sensible to helping out individuals. He gives approval to helping the little people hurt by the mage/templar conflict and the breach.

 

Its like if he takes a race as a whole, hes got his 'ive been around for a thousand years' glasses on, and nothing compares to the grandeur of the old Ehlven civilisation.

 

But hes still gonna share his bread with the hungry ones who did not choose their fate. He'll oppose any slavery.

 

I cant see him as a Big Bad (unless he is rewritten that way) because he is not just hubris. Hes more of a Logain type character who has a very defined view of the hard choices that need to be made (jsut like the Inquisitor, who either lost the mages or the templars to corruption).

 

Oh and the idea that his people might be the spirits and that bringing the Veil down is his endavour makes lots of sense. I cant wait to remind him of all the spiders we had to fight through -.-

Forcing us to participate in his downfall is not a plot that many of us here would want to play. Solas is becoming a popular character, though I'm sure the haters will be out there too (especially since he's picking up fangirls now and some people get jollies out of thwarting fangirls). If Bioware wants to sell DLC, they'll make it at the very least a mixed bag.

If it were a different medium I would totally agree that they're going to make him fall. Tragedy is almost always a more compelling story (when well-written), then medium-happy endings. But they're not writing a book, they're writing a video game and they don't have the luxury of being completely cavalier about whether or not their fans care. It's interesting that you use Morrigan as an example because they brought her back (in Witch Hunt), and then brought her back again (In DA:I). There are a few people I've heard who are mad at BW for having Solas break up with Quizzie, but most people seem to be in love with the story because there is still the promise that it will work out similarly to how Morrigan's story worked out. I just can't believe that they'd say "screw you guys" and completely deny the possibility of even a mildly happy ending. It might be "good" writing, but it's pretty bad customer relations. They have to balance those two aspects.

 

This is all very true. I'm still against the "they haven't done it before" argument because they can't do the same things again and again. They do have to change the stories they tell or people would lose interest. At the same time, BioWare has learned that their fans don't like inevitable tragedy. There has been very little praise for anything that ended that badly without a means to stop it. I brought up Morrigan because, by making Solas an LI, they are repeating something that they know fans don't like. It's not always about what fans want or they wouldn't have done it again. Even if it really is a second Morrigan where they have a DLC that fixes it, their history says that leaving things that way isn't something fans like. We may be more mellow because we're expecting a Witch Hunt equivalent that we may or may not get.

 

But yeah, I notice that Solas contradicts himself a lot. I wonder if even he knows exactly where he stands.

Yes, no culture will ever be his culture and so they're all failing. It's like... he's very naive or idealistic and expecting some kind of perfection to emerge at some point with the magic of old Arlathan and perfect equality for everybody.

The way I see it Solas is suddenly stuck between two sides, when he was only seeing his own beliefs strengthened by those that hated him for them before he joined the Inquisition.

I really think that he saw no hope for modern Thedas at all. He is a character that is full of pride, in a way. He only saw what his mistake had shaped the world into, realized that his own ideal of a world was not what happened to Thedas and deemed it worthless and beyond saving. The fact that no one seemed to listen to his beliefs, even worse, they downright refused to communicate with him, must have supported his theory of the world.

He was pretty selfish, too. The world is not what he wanted it to be like, so he has to change it again. Because he, himself, deems the current situation wrong. It is not good for his people, so it needs to change.

But then he joins the Inquisition and learns about a ton of people. People that listen to him, a bunch of different personalities that all work towards the same goal: Stop the threath that threatens the world they live in. The people of Thedas, the Inquisition, the Inquisitor ALL deem this world worth saving - and that may be very, very confusing for Solas. All he saw in the beginning was a stranger that can wield the power that should have been his. All he wished for was to get his orb back.

But the people of Thedas want to protect their world. That must be completely strange for Solas, for someone that sees this modern Thedas as nothing more than a mistake. Humans enslave others and begin wars over magic, the Qun dictates their peoples lives, elves cling to false ideals of their culture or try to survive and have no time to think about their culture at all, and dwarfs aren't connected to the veil and despise those that want to live on the surface. But despite all of that, these people see that Thedas is worth it.

That their own Thedas is freaking worth fighting for.

And I think it changes his outlook on the people - the Inquisitor and the Inquisition especially - but that can’t happen because it threatens his plans.

So he is stuck between seeing this 'wrong world' and the amount of 'right people' that live in it. But it isn't the right world for HIS people - and he has to pursue his goal because of that.

It must have been very difficult for him to make that decision.

I found it a little shocking    It would rather fit with the trickster god image of Fen'Harel, not much of a rebellion here. But then, the second you ask about it, everything trickster-ish vanishes into thin air and the only excuse he can come up with is "Err... FADE!" ...Huh?!?

I dont remember who said he needs the 'you cant go back home anymore' talk but you sir/lady was pretty right imo.

 

And Im pretty sure the 'dont do it cause I love you' route should not work on him. If romancing him has taught us anything, its that Solas is way more cerebral than that.

I don't think Solas will end up as the antagonist.

We already know that what he did, he did to save the "People", his immortal elven mage people. He and Flemythal were betrayed.
 

 

I think, in a desperate attempt to save his 'People', he sent them where he thought they would be safe, and sealed the forgotten ones into the abyss, too, but the remaining Elvhenan fell after he went into uthenera (the elven slumber), by warring against themselves. (We learn this in the temple of Mythal when Abelas says "we killed ourselves, long ago")

Having possibly used his orb to perform the sealing, its power must have been all used up, and he was "too weak to unlock it" to fix things after he woke up and saw everything gone wrong.

It is revealed in the game that before Corypheus became darkspawn, he was a Tevinter magister. At the time, Solas probably trusted him with charging his orb, but was betrayed, as Corypheus sought to use the power for himself to become immortal. This is most likely why Flemeth helps you fight him, because she was also betrayed and wants vengeance.

I believe what we see in the epilogue is Fen'harel's and Flemeth's plan B in case everything goes bad. (the orb is destroyed?)

Either way, the epilogue is a brilliant move by Bioware, masterful story-telling worthy of being called a masterpiece!

I'm looking forward to an expansion in the coming months where all of this is hopefully cleared up and we get to see more of Solas!

This thread is a roller coaster guys! I love all the discussion - it keeps me on the fence about whether or not things are going to end "well" for our heroines. Also I just passed 200 posts in the BW forum and I'm pretty sure 95% of them are in this thread.

So, this was really sweet.

 

I've already done Iron Bull's personal quest and my result ended up parting him from the Qunari entirely. I was running around Crestwood last night with Bull, Solas, and Varric in the party and got this banter:

 

Solas: You are not Tal-Vashoth, Iron Bull, not really.

Iron Bull: Well that's a fuckin' relief.

Solas: You are no beast, snapping under the stress of the Qun's harsh discipline.

Solas: You are a man who made a choice... possibly the first of your life.

Iron Bull: I've always liked fighting. What if I turn savage, like the other Tal-Vashoth?

Solas: You have the Inquisition, you have the Inquisitor... and you have me.

Iron Bull: Thanks, Solas.

 

I thought that was really sweet of Solas. First time I think I've heard him offer any sort of personal comfort/hand-of-friendship to one of the other party members like that.

Random theories/musings:

• What he seeks is to remove the veil completely. He gave the orb to Corypheus since he himself was too weak after being asleep for so long and hoped that he would do it for him (maybe he tried to trick him?). Obviously that backfired since ol' Cory had his own agenda and what he did was far more violent and... crude than what Solas envisioned. One of the earliest dialogues you can have with him in Haven has him paint a picture of this utopia where spirits and mortals live side by side in harmony. Corypheus violently tearing a hole through the veil, causing the Fade to bleed into the physical world, sending spirits into a new existence they can't cope with while also actively corrupting them to serve him probably isn't what Solas had in mind, based on a lot of his views throughout the game.
• If successful, I think demons might cease to exist. They would just be spirits, pure and uncorrupted. Maybe spirits and mortals would effectively become one and the same? Is that what the world was like before? Is that the reason why he feels such kinship with spirits, they essentially are more like what he is, what all things were? (think Synthesis in ME terms)
• The end clearly indicates that whatever it is that he feels he must do, is for the good of "the People". I don't think he means elves as a whole with this since he feels little to no kinship with any of the mortal races, but rather the ancient ones. Are there still others sleeping and he wants to help them reclaim what was lost or is something else involved? Literally turning back the clock for the entire world with time magic to a time before the elves descended into civil war and trying to undo the mistakes of the past? Obviously, that would also erase the present as we know it so that would be pretty bad news for every single living being in Thedas considering they will most likely never have existed.
• His thoughts on the current races living in Thedas seems quite low in general. The talk he gave my human Inquisitor after completing his personal quest seems to indicate that he thought that humans as a whole weren't worth much, but that I was an extraordinary individual who far surpassed his prejudices and expectations. But it was still basically just that I was the one true exception he had encountered, I didn't prove him wrong about humans but rather he saw me as someone who overcame the innate shortcomings of being human.
• If that whole "remove the veil" theory above turned out to be true, I think that because it would effectively alter reality itself as we know it, it might essentially be something of a global extinction event. He regrets the lives lost, but feels that it would create a better world. When the dust settles, the remaining ancient elves would awake from their slumber and from the ashes rebuild the world, side by side with spirits, free from the corrupting influence of mortals and aware of the mistakes that led to their downfall in the past.

My head hurts now.

Perhaps what Solas regrets the most is not that the elves have lost their history/glory but that they have lost their connection to the spirit world? A connection that once allowed them to be more wise, peaceful and also to live much longer than "present" elves? Maybe what he means by "the people" is the sum : elves + spirits, as if the spirits where in fact a part of them that has been taken away since the creating of the veil? No wonder he disaprove if Cole become more "human", perhaps in his mind human nature is associated with selfishness and destruction?

About the reason why Solas breaks up with Lavellan (my elven inquisitor didn't even start his romance arc yet but I like to speculate anyway), maybe that to achieve his goal he had to gain a power that he knew will change him forever. The sort of change that will make him care less (or not anymore) of the people he use to care for. A fate he would not wish even to his ennemies.

Has anyone cracked the code regarding what Patrick Weeke's random jumbled character tweets are about? I feel like it's just a sentence with the letters re-arranged, but I'm not smart enough to crack it. Someone tweeted this at him and he understood completely:

Iron Bull and Varric had a banter last night that literally made me laugh out loud. I don't see it listed on the wiki yet, sadly, so I don't have it verbatim. But Bull was asking Varric about his books and, specifically, where he gets his bad guys from. And Varric responds about being influenced by people around him, yadda yadda yadda. Bull interrupts him with, "No, I mean where do they literally come from. It's like they fall from the sky onto the hero's head."

 

I didn't hear Varric's response because I was laughing so hard at BioWare poking fun at themselves over the DA2 fall-from-the-heavens enemy spawns.
