So, one thing I find interesting - and worrisome - about Solas is his stance on the Wardens and the Blights.

btw I can't believe how fast this thread moves now o__o I was away for one evening and had like fifty pages to catch up on. I had to update the FAQ and put "read FAQ" in the title because some of the same questions were being repeated a lot. Hopefully that helps the flood

(remembers when there was like 10 of us and everyone else just said ew he's bald and boring LOL)

Oh, the good ol' days (of Arlathan), right, Solas?

That's precisely why I simply PM'd you all the posts so far regarding the artifact locations. This thread is quickfire...

I would have loved him with you guys D:

but I was avoiding any and all things related to inquisition prior to playing it (other than a trailer or two) so everything would be a surprise D:

A couple of months prerelease I pretty much went into complete media blackout for DA. I unsubbed from gaming and DA subreddits, avoided articles, everything. The only things I'd seen were the brief character profiles and interviews. Totally worth it. Even before then I hadn't been really keeping up. This is really the first time I've been on the boards since the ME3 ending fiasco.

We'll see about the mix. None of those groups like or want to help one another, which is a pity.

Also I thought reading the Masked Empire would offer me some more insight but no. Just finished it and it ends with another mystery come on!

TMI's dalish clan is hardly a universal example. DAO clans were much friendlier if still suspicious and grumpy. Plus Weekes seems to personally dislike the dalish for some reason
A few city elves showed interest in dalish culture too. And, well, ancient elves are either dead or proud, no surprise here
So not everything is so bad. Maybe there is a chance of elves becoming a united nation. It would require their own Andraste, though

This is why I feel like my Lavellan is more heartbroken over the elves and their general state of things than from

Spoiler
The elves really are fragmented, distrustful, and too caught up in their differences and beliefs to come together and work towards something better for their race. Throw in what little we did see of ancient elf attitude to modern elves and you have to wonder if Lavellan doesn't just stand there for a bit and think "WTF am I bothering for?" No option is a good option. They can't stop being elves, any of them, and they aren't in a position to change a whole lot of anything right off. None of the groups seem interested in doing that anyway. They're screwed. And if some choices are made for them, by someone seeking to right his wrong, that's not really any better. Makes me wonder where that's going to go, if anywhere.

That's why I thought the old gods and elf gods are the same. (Someone discribed them as ancient Greece and Rome)  They'd be going off and killing his friends. I don't think it has anything to do with the blight.

just curious why is it that when people speak of the various gods of thedas, they only talk about the Old Gods of Tevinter and the Elven gods? What about the Avvar gods and goddesses?

Aww... Yeah, I was pretty indifferent towards Solas until I actually played the game and met him.  I tried his romance on a whim (because he was exclusive to a Dalish female, and I thought it must fit for the story/roleplaying- how right I was!).  But, I'm a fan now :3.  I'm really glad I did, even with the sad feels.  I also love this thread!  It's great to read others' experiences and stuff they discovered/theorized about Solas.

TMI made it obvious. Solas kinda too. His dalish are so caricaturely "evil" and "bigoted" it was painful to read. As if he was trying to prove that we shouldn't sympathise with them. Though Bioware generally loves shitting on dalish, often templars and now grey wardens so no surprise here

See, I disagree about them being evil.

I love the Dalish, but they are a flawed people. No attempt at unity, no attempt at solidarity once they lost the Dales. This doesn't mean that they are wrong or evil. But they are misguided. So are the city elves. So are the ancient elves. Its kind of like an ironic, vicious cycle of blame. The ancient elves look down upon the Dalish elves for emulating their prideful ways, while the Dalish elves look down upon the city elves for bowing to human masters. When in fact, the ancient elves drove the Dalish elves to collapse, and without the solidarity of the people, the city elves had no choice but to succumb.

They are just flawed people. But there are plenty of good things about them. They are tenacious, they are proud. If they unified [which I very much hope we are moving towards], they could become major players again. They just need the support of some equally powerful people. Briala, for one. Perhaps one day, Solas. Or another champion.

Just because a few fall to corruption does not mean Weekes or any of the writers at bioware dislike them. I can't think of a single group on Thedas that does not have its share of ghosts and hypocrisy.

You're right - the Dalish are pretty diverse. I'm thinking that the ones that are most secluded/most knowledgeable of the old ways are the ones that are the least likely to want to help. The DA:2 clan didn't want anything to do with the eluvian or learning about their past - they seemed to just want to survive and get rid of Merrill (and I wouldn't call them exceedingly friendly). The clans that do seek out new knowledge (DA:O and TME clans) seem to get in a lot of trouble.

We know about a few of their gods. They also practice a lot of spirit magic. They seem to be able to invite spirits to possess their mages and then drive them out. You'd think that'd be a useful skill for Templars to learn but I think it just gives them the heebie-jeebies so they leave them alone. I wonder if we'll learn more about them in the future of it they will continue to be flavor text.

But Inquisition actually made me like the Dalish. Before, I didn't think they were especially well-rounded; just the same old haughty elves that you see in other media. But all of these revelations have made them rather tragic. They're definitely flawed, but flawed isn't bad. I don't think they can just continue on the course they have been; there definitely needs to be some change, but that just makes them all the more interesting.

Do Bioware hate the Grey Wardens because Inquisition problematized them and their methods?

We don't know much. A lot of it they keep within their own culture. They see gods tied to nature and animals, I believe.

Only two I can name are Korth the Mountain-Father and the Lady of the Skies. Or something along those lines.

I was a complete non believer in the appeal of Solas.  I thought he sounded interesting but I couldn't see 'it' myself.  However, I was completely wrong, he's wonderful and I was hooked by the end of the prologue.  It was lucky I rolled a human female first of because I'm not sure I would have had the will to continue with my Cullen romance (that I'd waited years for!) instead of chucking him for Baldy right off the bat.

I've naturally immediately started up a second playthrough as a fem Dalish PC and all I really wanted to say is that Patrick Weekes is amazing and has written a fine character - again.  Also endgame spoiler - OMG.   :D

PS - I still love Cullen though, it's just not exclusive any more.   ;)
