You also have to look at the fact that the reason why the DA2 clan was uninterested in pursuing anymore old knowledge of their actual traditions was that two of their hunters- the Dalish Warden Mahariel and Tamlen had found an Eluvian, been told it was Tevinter and then it ultimately killed both of them if you didn't choose the Dalish Warden path- and even if you did she/he was permanently lost to their clan. They had also lost all their halla to disease fleeing Fereldan, the other clan in DAO had basiclaly been betrayed by their Keeper. Clan Ilshae (Velanna's clan) essentially had a mini-civil war which resulted in their First Velanna, her sister Shianni and several others breaking from the Clan. None of these are conducive conditions to encouraging research on their heritage in the elves from DAO and DAII

I think honestly Lavellen coming from a middle of the road clan and esp if she didnt' get her vaslallin removed and helped Briala does have the power to unite at least the Dalish and City Elves- if Solas comes back or if she can get Keeper Abelas on her side by convincing him that the Dalish and City elves are worth the time of those who are just waking up from Uthenera (and ultimately she would have to - the city elves and Dalish barely have viable populations as it is due to marrying humans ,being killed wholesale (not to mention throwing away their mages in some clans e.g. Minaeve) and  those who are waking from Uthenera like Abelas do not have a viable population at all at this point- if they want to maintain the elven population at viable levels they are going to have to help bring the modern elves back up to where they used to be culturally, magically and in terms of biological aspects like their longer lifespans or they will all die out. ...I honestly don't see the atttude Solas and the ancient elves have about modern elves as dislike, or hatred, it seems more regret and pity to me.. they regret it was their actions that brought their people to be in the words of Elrond in LOTR (ironic quoting an elf about elves) "divided, scattered, leaderless" and they pity them because they have literally lost everything except the scraps they can gather from what was recorded by the Tevinters, or stolen by the Tevinters. Kind of like what most aboriginal tribes in North America practice today are warped, misinterpreted traditions, and they are  missing many pieces because those traditions were ripped away by the Europeans- and the American government and all they have left is what some white historian/anthropologist/archaeologist said about what their people "used to have" The elves have reached the point where the ancient elves either have to step up to the plate and lead their people if they want them to renew the good things about Arlathan or they all have to work together to create something new for all of the elven people

It makes me SO happy to see how many people are loving Solas. After the rocky and pretty negative early reactions to him, it's awesome that he and Patrick Weekes are getting the love and props they deserve! Weekes knocked it out of the park in this game, writing three of the (in my opinion) best characters in the game along with the best quest!

Re: Gods, Elvish Lore & the Chantry

Okay, so I haven't actually thought this out so it's really more thinking out loud than a formed opinion, but.. we know now that the Elvish gods are real. Or at least that a version of them are real. We know that because we've met two. (What is the connection between Fen'harel and Mythal? Why are those the only two at the Temple of Mythal? I'm going to pretend like maybe Fen'Harel is like a son to Mythal.) So all of the other gods, the "good" ones and the "bad" ones too. That's not going to work out that well for Fen'harel- you maybe even if 8/10 gods forgive him for locking them behind a mirror for a zillion years, you'll still have two royally pissed off gods.

 

The regular pantheon of gods and the forgotten ones aside, you still have Andraste (who is a real person) and the Maker. Who may or may not be real but I don't see why the elves gods could be real and not the human god. What if the Maker -is- one of the "forgotten ones" said to be against the elves? Or a god that is really powerful and became "the maker" to the humans through legend. Or maybe all of the forgotten ones are human versions of the elvish gods.  What if Fen'harel accidentally locked up the maker? lol.

 

Nevermind, I'm just rambling now. I just think it's so fascinating all the questions it raises. 

 

 

Honestly, I think Bioware is never going to mess with revealing the Maker because it is clearly based on Jehovah and they're not going to touch that political mess and risk offending a good percentage of their fan base.

In TME, to me, we just saw another way of how different the Dalish are. Not all clans will be the same. Like Solas said: some are like Lavellan, some are bandits, some are lost to the forests. Some make sure magic is spread throughout the people, others give them a pack of food and kick them out. Some allow city elves into the fold, and others see them as a waste of time. We saw the generally decent clans in DAO and 2, and then book and Inquisition provided us another perspective. I think their loss of their own culture hit me much harder when I saw and heard how other clans lead their lives. Ignorant of me - I guess I didn't realize how much they lost. Hearing Solas talk about Arlathan...he sounds so homesick. And waking up from Uthinara, seeing how everything has changed? Then going to his people, trying to explain, and being treated horribly? I don't blame him for being so angry. I think a part of him gave up on them until either his guilt or pride - or both - got the better of him. 

 

Talk about waking up on the wrong side of the bed.

I was just watching a video of Iron Bull's romance where you can ask him about safe words and what the other companions would use. Everyone got one - even Cole - but not Solas. I wonder why?

I clearly remember BW saying that in DAI we would be able to kiss our love interests when we wanted, just like we could in DAO. I checked with friends who are romancing other chars, and the have the option at Skyhold. I'm romancing Solas but I don't get any options when I talk to him in the rotunda (I can only ask about Cory or talk later).

Does he not have that option as a romance?

If he does, when?
I am this far:

He came up with one for each of them. The only one Bull outright asked was Cole, because he couldn't figure out what it would be. Cole didn't quite understand, and thank goodness for that.

I could see Solas coming around with some persuasion, but I can't see Abelas helping unless Solas or Mythal does first. To him and the other temple sentinals, they've already lost their culture. Whatever the Dalish and City Elves are doing is so far removed from the days of Arlathan as to be unrecognizable. I sort of think of it as: would ancient Romans want to save the US if it were in trouble because there are a lot of Italian people here? Probably not - the US is nothing like ancient Rome. Preserving the bloodline is not the same as preserving the culture (not to mention the Dalish don't even all believe that their blood is the same as city-elf blood, but I'm going to leave that brand of race politics alone), and saving the elven bloodline would not bring back the glory days of Arlathan so why would Abelas bother? I imagine he sees it as the best they can do is live as different-looking humans. Even if they were to regain the same levels of population and political power, they will never be the same as the ancient empire (in part, because some of that power may have come from the Fade).

 

That doesn't even address the problems of all the other nations. You'd need to convince Ferelden or Orlais or Tevinter to give up land for the new elves. I know the Hinterlands could have been given to the Dalish after DA:O but that doesn't seem to be in effect anymore...? You have to hope they don't decide to unite and crush the movement early on. You have to organize the new society so that there are people who will grow the food and wash the streets and rule over others - how is that going to work? How are you going to convince some Keepers and Hahrens to give up power?

 

I read that originally the elves were based off of the Jewish people (slavery, genocides, loss of homeland and heritage, etc). They have had many years to get their country stabilized and that is still not going well, even with the backing of several powerful allies. Political movements are hard.

 

But...luckily in DA we have magic, and "gods". I suspect that if the elves do rise up, it will be as a result of some new power emerging. I love the elves, I hope they get their due. I just don't see how they can with their current resources.

I think it makes sense we don't get an automatic kiss from Solas.  He's the one in "control" and he keeps saying they shouldn't do it.  I just can't see him letting Quizzy kiss him when ever.
