Since Abelas is an ancient elf but also has the vallaslin (and speaks derisively of them when talking about the Dalish), can we presume that he was a slave?  Bound to Mythal in his role as a temple guardian?  I think all of the sentinels might have vallaslin too.

So who was saying Solas is a niche romance ? Our thread is #2 on posts and views. It has 1 million views, half of what the Cullen thread has but Cullen has had a very loyal fan base since DAO. The 3rd place on posts and views doesn't come close to 500 k views.

I think he's wearing one of the vallaslin the fandom has assumed is associated with Mythal, so yes. He might not have been an actual slave though, but a regular elf who dedicated himself to Mythal and had the vallaslin tattooed as a visible way to show it.

Honestly, if Solas and Cullen hadn't been added, I wouldn't have romanced any of the male companions with a female Inquisitor. I probably would have just romanced Josephine (with a lady) and Dorian (with a man) and... stared longingly at Solas and his bald head or something.

I must admit that Solas' romance was really well done and as much as I found him appealing I prepared for this.At this point I can't choose between his and Cullen's,I love them both to pieces for different reasons.

Blackwall was...oddly charming (which you can actualyl say to him), but I hate hate hate his beard, and after seeing where his story went...ugh. I think I'll romance him on my playthrough where my LI's all end up dying.

 

Iron Bull seems fun, but he just seems better romanced by one of my male characters. I just can't picture romancing him with a female character for some reason...

Vallaslin musings

I assumed 'slave' might have been an extremely broad term. Its possible only a select caste of ancient elves lacked it. Each vallaslin would have marked you in the service to one of the nine 'gods', and you were a slave in the sense that you did whatever it was that it was decreed upon you. 

 

So, some ancient elves might not see the marking as a bad thing. It would be a symbol of their servitude. Apparently the connotation was solid enough among some elves that the Dalish continued the tradition. I doubt they would have kept it going if it was so obvious a bad thing. 

 

Solas, inevitably, saw them for what they were.

I'm wondering if something changes if you let Solas have his vengeance against the dumb mages that turned his friend to a demon. Does he get hardened or something? I'm wondering this, because I want him to stay puppy Solas, not rage machine Solas, but I think it's fair for him to avenge his friend. After all those humans are just imbeciles.

It does also make me wonder if the fall of Arlathan was more than just a civil war. The way Solas describes Arlathan, it almost sounds like it was the kind of society that only could have existed in the presence of gods, or at the least very powerful beings of some sort.  All of the elves supposedly had magic, so you would need immensely powerful rulers considering how even normal, Thedosian mages can play havoc with reality.  Maybe whatever magic held Arlathan together didn't work without the gods once Fen'Harel sealed them away.  Maybe the servitude was partially societal, partially magical compulsion like the Well of Sorrows.

 

Can I just get a 500 page elven lore doc, BioWare?

so im in the middle of another playthrough and this time i forced myself to not romance solas     i did however, cave in on the first kiss, but then broke it up after when they talked about it.

i have to tell you guys though it was so satisfying for HIM to suddenly come up later in the game saying he was thinking about that kiss and THIS time my lavellan is the one going "lol sry we should just be friends". 

 

 

all im saying is, a playthrough where solas is pining after your careless inquisitor as a headcanon instead, made me feel a bit better surprisingly. 

 

of course i would leap right back to him in a heartbeat if he would end up getting his bald tooshy back to skyhold

What I find funny is looking back on the interview Patrick Weekes gave about Solas being a regular elven apostate. I remember thinking that he didn't even seem that into his own character, especially with his really excited Iron bull interview, if I only knew! *sigh*

lol ya I did the same on my Cullenmancer and Solas completely ignored the fact that I had had a smoochfest with Cullen and told me he couldn't forget our kiss. Unlike you I couldn't resist and had to reload a save cause I jumped into his long elf arms again
