I imagine her to be in her late twenties. It's just hard to imagine someone in their teens or early twenties leading an inquisition.

I agree, though I think her age can kind of be looked over considering her biggest qualification as inquisitor is "miracle worker". Race and get gender clearly don't matter, I imagine age is a small issue in light of her special circumstances.

I see mine as in her late 20's.  The age difference didn't really dawn on me until recently tho...

 

Cari I imagined to be 30 and turning 31 over the course of the game. So she's young still but old enough that she's mellow and rational. She's the oldest of my PCs at the start (technically Hawke is older since he was 25 at the beginning of DA2).

 

Also, DID SOMEONE SAY ZEVRAN???? *heavy breathing* I love Zevran and I thought his romance was the sweetest, depth-filled thing that I never expected. However, I actually never romance him! I always go for Alistair with my human noble but boy do I love me some Zevran. It depresses me that he didn't show up in DAI. I romanced Fenris in DA2 with my canon and love him but the love isn't as strong as for Alistair or Zevran. 

 

Solas, however, came down and snatched me up in the proverbial wolf jaws. He's my favorite BioWare character ever now. Not that I was intensely biased or anything after watching the game's progress for 9 months and deciding I was a Solas fan that long ago too. Noooooo...

My Lavellan has such a baby face, I always end up picturing her in her early twenties. Maybe mid twenties by the latest. It's a mayfly december romance in the truest sense. Solas is a perv, what can I say?

 

Spoiler tagging because long post is long and a lot is not directly about Solas himself but rather the game, stories and characters in general. Basically Solas related content is the last paragraph if anyone is interested in that.

I agree. its suppose to take 20-40 hours to get through the main quest itself, but the game has 200 hours of content from what I've seen for estimates. That means that the main storyline is 10-20 percent of what is there, maybe even less. I get it that Skyrim was their inspiration but I think they're forgetting a few things that Skyrim has with its huge open world that Inquisition does not have, and probably can not do:

- There's more than one big story to complete. The "main story" of skyrim reaaaaaally isn't the main story. Nor really the point of an elder scrolls game. The point is more to go off and be your character, make your own trail and find your own interest within the game But you cant exactly do that with inquisition. You are the Inquisitor. you have duties, responsibilities, places to be and an organization, you're not a freelancer that can go off and do whatever they please.

- Mods. Skyrim is mod compatible and amazing mods are still coming out. As far as I've heard they don't really want mods for Inquisition but there are so many small things that Mods could add for each player.

- Skyrim has way fewer load screens. Its, aside from cities, dungeons and player homes, one giant open world with multiple story lines you can follow. That takes you out of the game less and generally keeps a player more emerged in the world.

 

The other main problem from what I can see is that Origins is the game that started Dragon Age. Origins had fairly poor graphics, combat got a little boring unless you were on really difficult levels but even then you could just take a bunch of mages, have a tank pull aggro and murder your tank in a storm of the century combo to roflstomp everything. But Origins did have an awesome storyline and extremely in depth characters with hours of party banter that was highly amusing. see: "and what guidance do you find in those swaying hips?" or Literally anything Zevran would say.

I think part of the problem is because they're drawing away from the story and more towards the open world, the very root of Dragon Age (the storytelling) is being forgotten to a degree. Its still there, sure, but it's no longer as much the main focus. Personally I was here for the story, And I was disappointed. It didn't feel properly resolved and it didn't feel like I got to know all the characters very well. The end of the game left me with a rotten feeling in my stomach and pushed me away from wanting to replay. It took 5 or 6 character attempts before I found one i liked enough to get past Haven with, and another 4 or 5 before I found one I like enough to finish the game a second time with. I feel like there wasn't a solid conclusion, and I feel like this is the first Dragon Age game where my protagonist doesn't have a proper ending.

Sure I've clocked in like 120 hours so far in the past couple weeks, but if we compare that with Skyrim that's not even 1/10th the amount of time I've gotten out of it so far. I still have storylines to finish, I still have mods I want to try, I own the DLC and I haven't even gotten to the DLC storylines yet! I still have BOOKS to collect! (books are to skyrim what pokemon are to well.. pokemon for me)

 

It just seems like they were so close to having a game that was as good if not better than origins but they pulled a bit too far away from the story and characters that originally drew players to the series. They damn well could have had a game that was better than origins but the most important aspect for achieving that is the story and they just simply fell flat there. Well the story and the mods, I loved playing with the DAO mods on later characters.

 

As for Solas himself, he feels like a DLC character of sorts. It, to me, feels like he was thrown in the game for no other reason than to be a plot piece and was then forgotten about until he was needed again. sure it was probably to avoid spoilers to his character but I feel like they could have dropped more on us than they did. Would it really have been too devastating to give us a few more hints about the truth in exchange for better development of his character, and a better understanding of him? Personally I don't think so. There were points where there was information we should have been able to pick up about him, yet we didn't. When he's in the fade with us, despite that the Dalish don't know elven as well as they'd like, we should have picked up enough from the conversation with the fear demon to say "hey. wait a second. He's saying this to Solas and i can pick out ___ ____ and ___ from it, all of which seems extremely fishy, I should confront him about it, or maybe have Leliana look into it". I also find it extremely strange that Leliana didn't do much checking in on Solas. If he is part of the Inner Circle I'd think Leliana would at least do a basic background check on the guy, y'know. go to where he's from, meet some people talk to them about him ect ect. If our spymaster didn't even do that (which is all that was needed to find out his town does not exist any longer) then I think there is a bit of a problem, particularly because of how good she is suppose to be at her job.

 

Well, on the subject of Skyrim...

Skyrim's success has been a slow build, the work of decades of games built on top of each other. The modding is what keeps the community healthy and it actually does have some really good stories from time to time. Morrowind is probably the best, but the others aren't bad. Skyrim's isn't anything to write home about but there have been a few gems (Sheogorath's DLC from Oblivion, ironically the main quest in Elder Scrolls Online). The difference between the Elder Scrolls and Dragon Age for me is that the Elder Scrolls isn't afraid to be goddamn weird. The player character in Skyrim is a literal demigod wandering around consuming the souls of dragons and while they're the only one they can find, they're certainly not the only one loose in the setting. They're also not really anything special when it comes to Elder Scrolls protagonists. Talos is actually canonically considered to be a player character, for example. Morrowind's story was built on the idea of godhood and apotheosis, breaking reality, CHIM, and making ingame world building gags about the save system. The player character is literally recognized as remaking reality in game every time they reload a save. There are lore books on it. It's weird and cool and really sort of odd. It embraces the setting oddities and while they're not all hits, it's not afraid to draw back the curtain and let you do really big world changing things.

 

There's a lot of stuff to do, a lot of weird stuff, and the Daedric Princes are always a hoot. The Fork of Horripilation aside, there's just a lot to do and the game is not afraid to dump you hip deep in some of the weirdest aspects of the mythology upfront. It never hides it from you, not really. You always know what you need to know to do what you need to do and if you want to find out the rest (like reading the sermons of Vivec) it's open to you. The secrets are yours for the taking if you care to go out and find them. You can planewalk, become a champion of all the Daedra, conquer the guilds, and more. Whether you choose to do anything with it or not, you're more than mortal no matter what you do. Running through the planes of Oblivion and murdering all the daedra isn't actually unusual for an Elder Scrolls hero, smacking down Alduin is a worthy feat but it's not enough to raise the Dragonborn to the status of hero among heroes. They're just another hero in a long line of over the top heroes who have reshaped the face of Tamriel to suit themselves.

 

Dragon Age on the other hand clutches it's secrets tightly. It tells tight character driven narratives. As much as there's room for humor, the setting does want to be taken seriously. For all that it's magical use and general setup does pull from Warhammer and 40k (oh... the Inquisitor, yes those Inquisitors...), it lacks the general over the top excess which makes those settings so... Warhammer. This time out it feels... afraid. The characters are still the best part of the narrative and I certainly have enjoyed my playthroughs, but the main quest feels tentative by comparison even to Origins. The sense of grandeur and ambition are missing in the later stages of the game. There's an open-ish world to explore, but not much reason to explore it. There's no weird stuff that leaves you wondering what might be in that tomb on the other end of the horizon. The basic mythology of the world doesn't open up, we never really get concrete answers from Corypheus on exactly what happened with the Black City. We never really find out what happened to the other Tevinter Magisters.

 

The Black City ironically opens up the perfect plotline for Solas. Investigating the Fade should be his main plot line, but that plot isn't there. He's a fade expert, but he actually has very little to offer. When he does have answers, he usually clams up for fear that he'll say more than he should. He's a character that's trying so hard not to tip his hand that he can't help tipping his hand that he's more than he appears, but if you have a suspicion you can't follow up on it. You can't ask basic questions like: if the orb Cory has is elven, then are there other orbs out there like it? Can we find them? Can we use them to counteract this orb? He's going back to the Black City, should we try to beat him there?

 

Solas isn't a Master Li and he's not a Kreia. He should be the driving force behind you, encouraging you to seek new information out along a carefully constructed line so that you'll find the answers you need to in order to do the thing he needs you to do. Or he would if he was any good at manipulation. I mean, it's theoretically possible that the anchor on the player character's hand could be used to open the Eluvian holding the elven gods prisoner. Solas doesn't try trick the player into busting them out for him. He doesn't even give the Inquisitor the information they need along with a solid reason to keep the orb intact. The reason could be complete BS, but he never tries to protect it other than admitting that it's elven.

 

I love him and I love his romance but he should be much, much more involved in the main plot than he is. I don't know, the story needs more freedom to be weird. Like assaulting the Wall of the Faithless kind of weird.

Why do you say a young hero for Dragon Age standards. I'd say almost all the Origins heroes are really young. Amell, Tabris, and Surana are all (I'd say) younger than 20.

Maybe I should have said for Inquisition standards, then, considering that half of your companions are over 40 and the rest seem to fall in the late-20 or 30 area.

I can accept a younger Dalish inquisitor, personally. Compared to other races, Dalish seem like they might be a bit more 'mature'. They grow up in a tightly knit community where it seems everyone performs jobs and tasks. There's probably not a lot of room for slackers or those who would put the clan at risk. If you are playing a mage Lavellan, she's been groomed for leadership as soon as she started to show signs of magic.

I can accept a younger Dalish inquisitor, personally. Compared to other races, Dalish seem like they might be a bit more 'mature' than other races. They grow up in a tightly knit community where it seems everyone performs jobs and tasks. There's probably not a lot of room for slackers or those who would put the clan at risk. If you are playing a mage Lavellan, she's been groomed for leadership as soon as she started to show signs of magic. 

The Dalish are pretty naive, however, and you'd have to be a powerful mage which takes time.

 

Of course it's whatever people prefer to roleplay. Buffy the Demon Slayer just doesn't work for me.

Yes, this. My current Lavellan (she's 25-27) didn't want to become Keeper beacuse of that.

My first one was probably 20-22, though, but she wasn't a mage.

Lol that's true. I imagine everyone meeting the Hero of Ferelden who is still years younger than most of them and her/him admitting that a teenager decided the rulership for two kingdoms and other such nonsense X)

My Inquisitor... I was planning on her being a bit older, but then I had to go and make a character with such a babyface.   I think elves just look young in general though. Solas does not look 40 (maybe that was foreshadowing all along). If I had to lay down a hard number I'd say 23-25. Older than she looks, but that's by human standards. A bit cheeky sometimes, but she's mostly a sweetheart. Rational, compassionate, and curious, but she becomes so strong over the course of the story. I'm glad I had the opportunity to RP her like I wanted.

 

In particular, I really liked that scene with Mother Giselle after the destruction of Haven in terms of character development. She's usually very mature, but she acts like a bit of a brat in that scene because she's stressed and scared and disturbed that so many people see her as a savior.

I personally think a younger dalish works better than playing a very young human Inquisitor, though. Since these Inquisitors are part of the royalty I can't really imagine the really young ones being like "Yup, gonna lead a huge-ass organisation now!", especially not if they are a mage.

But hey, to each their own! I will play both, young and old-ish characters. And I'm only 18 myself, so hey.

Regarding DLC:

This conversation was...several pages ago but I have so many feels about it! My understanding is that there are basically two views on DLC: it should be extra content or it should be extended content. In that, some people don't agree that DLC should relate to the main story and some people are either indifferent or would prefer that it does. I'm of the latter opinion generally. So I definitely want to see story-related DLC and I wish we knew what the post-credit scene means yesterday (but take all the time you need DA:I team you're awesome). The fact that there are a lot of people that think DLC should just be extra content though worries me. I don't want to just get a bunch of DLC like Mark of Assassin, ESPECIALLY while we have all these questions about DA:I. I agree with a lot of what's been said here - DA:I is the first game in the series that doesn't feel done. It's the first game that you can play post-credits (not just from a re-loaded save). It don't feel like pre-boss content would be satisfying. My dream would be to see a few episodic DLCs that stand alone but also inch the story further and culminate in a great Solas snogfest. I'm going to be really sad if the first non-multiplayer, non-extra stuff (armor/weapons/hair) DLC is completely unrelated to Solas/Mythal/Arlathan/Old Gods. Just needed to get that out there

My boyfriend is from a different country than I am and speaks several languages that I do not. Sometimes I just have him read crap like magazine articles and newspapers because it sounds so beautiful. Would pay for some DLC that has an elf-poetry scene.

I was an Alistair fangirl right up until he was all "hey Tabris, wanna be my lady-on-the-side?" Nope. That Warden made the ultimate sacrifice, and Cousland went with Zevran. It's been elves ever since and I've never looked back.

 

Re: Age

 

All of my DA characters have started off young. I imagine my Cousland was around 25 or 26. Hawke was max 20 starting off (30 by the end right - I even mage her older in Inquisition). I'm 23-almost-24 and often get mistaken for 17, and imagine Lavellan is similar (with a maturity adjustment because people were "older" in maturity earlier in life in medieval times due to the constant threat of death). First because it's easier for me to rp someone my age or younger because I've had that experience. Second because I felt like it fit her better for her to be inexperienced, curious, and malleable. I felt like if she'd spent too much time with the Dalish, her views would be pretty set and she'd be very unlikely to accept being herded into dealing with all these human problems. Plus in my early dialogue choices she definitely came off as someone who'd been thrown into a situation she had no ability to properly process (mostly because I never had any idea what tone I was selecting).

 

And I know Solas is supposed to be "40" but he does not look it. Maybe because of all that beauty rest? The power differential is there even if Lavellan is 50 just 'cause of who/what Solas is, so I guess it doesn't matter a whole lot.

My Lavellan definitely does a better job at expressing emotion than my Trevelyan did, her face seems better able to handle more minute gestures. I love Solas' expressions too, I mean when they hit it's just wow. There's some pretty incredible depth there. I haven't gotten tired of looking at the screencaps of his face yet.

I must be the only one here whose Lavellan was older. She's firmly 38 in my mind and has experienced the world as much as one can expect a Dalish hunter to have done so. She's not shy, inexperienced, or uncertain. Wary and unsure about this whole new anchor-in-my-hand, hole-in-the-sky thing, but that's expected of anyone, considering.

 

She's also not torn up to sobbing incoherence about what happens. She certainly didn't want it to end up that way, and was hurt, but again, that's an expected emotion. She'll get over it and probably still want to find/be with Solas, but it's not going to make her cry herself to sleep every night. She's old enough to know that's sometimes how it works, and she's got stuff to do in the meantime.

 

Doesn't mean she doesn't feel sad or have some interesting dreams, though...

About the age thing, there's really always an experience gap between Solas and Lavellan, so he's hahren no matter what.

 

One thing I'm glad of is to have an elf exclusive romance. It feels more authentic and unique, and I'd done enough of the "cross cultural" thing in past games. Now we need a dwarf exclusive, but that probably won't happen.

Yep same here.  Alistair and Kaidan have always been my fave BioWare romances.  Spent less time with Solas, but the depth and intensity of it just may have put him #1.
