So I am currently nerding out to a few things as I read through the dragon age wiki page.
Spoiler
First of all, this codex entry:
The Dalish use "harellan" to mean "traitor to one's kin," but the word does not appear in any elven text before the Towers Age. The ancient root-word is related to "harillen," or opposition, and "hellathen," or noble struggle. The Dalish call Fen'Harel a god of deception, but I posit a far more accurate translation would be "god of rebellion."
What he rebelled against is a story lost to time. In Dalish legends, Fen'Harel seals away the other deities out of love of trickery. If we understood more ancient elven, we might find earlier versions of the Dread Wolf's story give him a more nuanced motivation beyond spite.
— From A Treaty on the Pagan and Heretical Customs of the Elven, by Senallen Tavernier of the University of Orlais, commissioned by Empress Celene.
This raised my eyebrow. Why? Well, let's check out that info in the first couple sentences. The word "harellan" (in reference to The Dread Wolf) was never seen in any elven text before the Towers Age.
Why is that?
What happened in the Towers Age to bring up such a word in reference to Fen'Harel? Who would name give him such a name, "traitor to one's kin". That's pretty personal, no?
So I looked at the dragon age timeline (like I said, nerding out here) and took a look at the Towers Age. Guess what was the FIRST thing I saw about said age?
3:00 Towers: Flemeth is said to be born in the Fereldan village of Highever.
Oh.
OH!
OOOOOH!
The first appearance of Flemeth in the world, you know, the person who houses the spirit of Mythal? Yeah. That person.
So. What we know:
- Flemeth was born around the beginning of the Towers Age
- Sometime within her (mortal) life she became one with the spirit of Mythal
- It wasn't until the Towers age that any record of the word "harellan" in reference to anyone existed
My thought: Flemythal was that one to bring that word back into the modern world to describe Fen'Harel - perhaps in reaction to how he slighted her???
Oh and an extra bit of fun: one of Solas' tarot cards is The Tower.
Not saying this is all necessarily connected... but you can't make this **** up.
