Given that the other mages in your party aren't sure of where it comes from, from what I remember, I'd imagine it's a lie on his part.

My Lavellan was a sad panda with no tattoos.
I got vallaslin removed, picked the weepy option ("don't leave me" or somesuch), then "I love you." I looked at the other options later but my first choices were the only ones that felt right.
I hope he felt bad.

YES! I've seen people go, "OH NOOOO I ticked off my LI gotta reloooaaaad" but it's like... why? I mean, if it's a gamebreaking thing then yeah (or rather romance-breaking... like with unhardened Leliana at the Ashes, or Alistair at the Landsmeet if you want a schmoopy, non-murdery epilogue to your romance), but otherwise if all they're doing is griping at you or giving you sour looks, why not roll with that?
I'm saying this as someone who disagreed with Zev and Morrigan about the golems, rivalmanced Fenris, encouraged Cole to be more human/drank from the Well/didn't exile the Wardens... it's okay to not blow glitter up your LIs butt and it's fine if they call you out when you do stuff they don't like.

Well, I like getting to know one side of the character before I pick apart the other sides. Also, I do have multiple PCs for one LI - one PC is most like the LI in beliefs, another is more opposed. Right now I'm exploring Terrwyn's personality more and how similar or different she is to Solas, and I change things along the way. So far she's been similar, taking the more pragmatic route even if she may emotionally want something better. And when I do reload, I'll find something I agree with more or disagree with, then reload back, or I just want to see how a different path goes. It's for multiple reasons. It's not gamebreaking to me. 
I'd like to introduce everyone to the newest Lavellan to fall to Solas's charms - Meabh Lavellan!

I tried to give her the same profile as the tarot artwork (which also coincides with how elves look in DA2). I don't think I got it quite right, so I might remake her before really starting her playthrough.
I love the new elven profiles. I loved them in DA2, and I love that we can create them in DAI!

Remove option, because I see it is his ultimate love confession, and blessing. That, and the angry reaction. The american vocie makes it so dramatic. and shows that behind the tough mask is a girl that is not invincible at all. Just like with Cassandra.
Since I am writing from my XBONE I cannot quite figure out how to link YT videos, but my Lavellan romance could probably best be summed up by Lenka and her song Trouble is a Friend.

...can I just say that I love how different Lavellan can look like? I can say it again and again, but I just love it! I want to make a Warrior Lavellan next, one that just screams 'soldier' and 'I will do things my own way!' - I hope I can achieve this look. She will be 100% different from my current Lavellan.
I'm still in Haven (I take my time), but I will go with the "I believe in us!" choice, after the vallaslin removal. It fits my character a lot more, since she would always try to work things out. She's a little naive when it comes to things like that. She'd even tell two opposing faction to just "Make peace already!"
I just can't imagine her without her vallaslin. She looks so young already...I imagine she would look even younger. She doesn't look like 24 at all! Taleyah would look so...barefaced. *Captain Obvious strikes again!*

Someone else mentioned that getting angry seems to make him feel more justified in leaving. I'd rather have him know that my girl loves him like he does her.

Roll with it. Solas goes all guilt trippy afterwards. Even in the final scene. The closest one can get to smacking sense into that bald skull of his.
