Yeah, I thought that was annoying. You go from "elf + human = completely human" (ala Alistair, Slim Couldry, etc.) to the Forgotten Realms half-elf looking Feynriel, and back again in DAI where

I guess it comes down to... what makes an elf? Is it the big eyes, the pointed ears? The lithe body? Some connection to the distant past..?

Lol, it's annoying. Would have been much simpler if elves and humans just couldn't breed with each other, or if they had "Half-elf Classic" in the setting.

Well yeah, his mother still contributed her facial structure to his genetics, just not her ears.

 

I do want to point out that the artwork for Feynriel in DAKeep has him with elf ears, even though he most definitely had human ears in DA2.

 

Speaking of other weird genetics stuff in the DA Universe... I think it was confirmed in a codex in DA:O that elves can't grow facial hair, but then there was a banter with Blackwall and Solas, I think? Where Solas laughs about that and says something like, "Well you haven't met very many elves, then."

 

Now I'm picturing a beardy Solas...

Elves in DAII did have a bit more of a striking appearance that they seem to have worked away from. I understand the thought they were going for, but I wouldn't be surprised if the half elf from DAII was chalked up more to ingame weirdness.

I head-cannon it all as Varric being a racist in his story.  Makes the reason for DA2 elves being so fugly go down a bit easier.

I think he touches her before that she's just not aware, when he's studying her mark and she's knocked out. In my headcanon, she also used powder (makeup) to hide her Dalish tattoos so she could properly spy, and he's the first to discover it whilst she still hasn't woken up, and brushes away the powder with his thumb... And that's how I explained that little line at the beginning when he says that our clan is unique in that it sent someone to spy on the Conclve. But even without the powder/spy bit, he's still studying the mark on her hand, remember? :3

 

I can see him being dominant at times, certainly, but definitely more passionate than anything. I like to think when my Lavellan flirts with him, while she's doing it for fun and to see him squirm, she has no idea about the can of worms she's cracking open. 

I totally agree! can see him being like everyone else has said: Alpha, confident, dominant (without having to deliberately show any of the aforementioned qualities because they're just innate parts of his personality) and deeeefinitely passionate... Especially when your Lavellan first kisses him, he's like, "Oh, no... You'll not steal my heart and not pay for it".... And he just... DFKLJSadfkaj Damn this thread and my feels... I have school work to do >.<

Okay guys, so I think I'm giving up on trying to stay caught up! XD
Anywho, I wanted to say how awesome and polite everyone (compared to like YouTube) is and how much I enjoy reading people's comments. The Dragon Age community is the first fandom I've ever gotten involved with. I actually just got Origins and DA2 earlier this year after seeing Origins on a top 10 fantasy games list (I love fantasy). Needless to say I fell in love with the series and eagerly joined in with the pregame hype!

The forums are so awesome and I laugh out loud way too much reading this stuff! (Seriously, I get thrown some dirty looks at campus) And having a community to discuss and share my Solas experience with is amazing *.* (I wish you guys were around when Alistair stole my archdemon kill in a fit of "compassion" :'c). Um yeah, that's really all.

His ears don't look pointed at all to me at that angle. He does almost have the DA2 elf nose, though. But again, even if his mother didn't give him her ears, she still most likely contributed to at least his facial structure.

 

Of course, when we look at Alistair and his mother... he doesn't share even a shred of his mother's appearance, imo. I dunno... the only people who know 100% are the devs (and this stuff can still be retconned later anyway).

I don't quite understand the wolf pelt and wolf skull in his concept art tbh. I mean, it's like a human wearing human skin and human skulls. Kind of creepy.
