<_< When I read the comment about maybe something bad happened that caused Solas to leave his little village my first thought was that it had better not be because his wife died or he had to kill his lover. Just please no.

Yeah, same. I don't want every companion to have a cliché tragic backstory. I'd really like it if Solas wanted to help the Inquisition, so he did, simple as that. It's refreshing to have a character with simple motivations every now and then.

*screaming from the rooftops* Simple isn't bad!

I mean I'm not against tragic backstories, on the contrary I think they can give a character so much depth. However when every  character has some sort of drama or tragic past it just becomes saturated, and frankly boring.

Well how about another theory: Solas is traveling or in a ruin and the Inquisitor shows up and meets him, somehow ends up having to reveal the fade hand's abilities and he joins initially to study the fade mark and once he sees what the Inquisition is trying to do he starts getting more motivation to help the Inquisition than just research.

Edit: This could also happen at a fade tear location to make it less coincidental.

I would find it more likely that he left to keep himself hidden and his family safe, or possibly because to sleep in ancient ruins you have to travel to get there and he just set off to wander and has been content to live his life that way. It's not like he could really settle down anywhere without risking someone learning he's a mage.

It could have been a massacre that happend there. It's a possibility he could have had family but he could have also had friends. I'm sure @Roxy was thinking of more than just a wife getting killed.

Edit: His Fade abilities could also be a reason. Maybe he has been too concerned with his studies and travels to have really been involved in social matters outside of your occasional fellow traveler which could affect how he could be used to being around a group and working for a common cause.

Yes I was thinking more of family and friends and maybe he had a girlfriend a lover and something horrendous happened to them not by Solas's causing or his doing....maybe this little village was full of apostates? And it got overrun by thugs and murderers or templars and he got away,  It's just speculation. I'm not trying to ruin anybody's day here.  :)

And yes there is probably no tragic backstory to Solas whatsoever he's really just a Fade Nerd!

Plus I wouldn't want him to have a tragic backstory either...but you know how these Bioware writers are!  :/

Maybe it could be like the occasional banters that had hawke just say something at the end but perhaps extended on to where they actually say something in the middle if the conversation.

From the way they said it I got the feeling that we could actually choose what we say.

I dunno, a person with a perfectly happy life has little reason to become an adventurer. I could see one companion that way, but they'd need I be fresh faced too. As the hazards of adventuring tend to include tragedy at some point.

What if the drama happens afterwards...? What if he has no tragic past but a tragic ending? What if... [insert tragic ending that involves Inquisitor's safety]? Don't know why... but I sense some drama behind/ahead Solas... Not necesserily deadly, but who knows? -nonsense speculating ends-

I personally love the turning points and I believe that there will be surprises (good or bad) involving at least one companion.

I also believe that Solas' connection to the Fade will have a huge impact on the story... we'll only have to see how!

The tear in the Fade is reason enough no?  :P

I get what you mean, but I guess I'm just growing tired of many characters plots point focusing on past tragedy. Like I said I'm not against them but when there is so many you just become numb to the characters struggles. Or maybe that's just me- probably just me.

I'd prefer some more character drama focused on the present. More fan tears that way.

I think we can all happily get behind the idea of a fade nerd. :)

I wouldn't worry too much about Solas' past being heartbreakingly tragic. If you look at the characters PW wrote in the past - Mordin, Tali, Kasumi, Jack, possibly Miranda? (read that somewhere, not sure if it's accurate) - they certainly have colorful pasts, usually resulting in some moral quandary they eventually have to deal with. Never anything that's impossible to overcome though. Even if there is tragedy involved, its typically handled in way that avoids needless melodrama - except maybe Jack, but with her it was part of her personality, and understandable. So I'm thinking with Solas there's some moral dilemma, or a questioning of ideology. Lets just hope we don't get any tragic endings. While the Mordin thing was beautifully done, I was seriously a wreck that whole damn day after.

Same here! The whole Tuchanka mission was SO on point. I had many issues with ME3, but the things the game got right, it nailed.

That being said, I still don't want anything like that to happen to Solas. Was it Weekes that kept sending out tweets about how he was constantly doing something really depressing? Hopefully it's just Cole

Also, regarding the whole 'kids these days' comment. I'm 30, and I say that about the 'kids' (these are people between 18 and 25 or so) that work for me, because of how tech has advanced so much, and because they didn't experience the magic that was the 80s. I wouldn't read too much into it, haha!

I will certainly be fine with choosing the things we say. It just doesn't seem likely but who knows. If we do I will be pleasantly surprised. Either way I hope our personality will affect the banter in some way. Would it be too spoilery for the devs to answer this in a tweet do you think?

I'm gonna guess that spoilery aside, this also might be the sort of thing where they are still working out the kinks. It is the sort of thing that can easily get buggy...

Yea I guess "buggy" would be the better term to use in this situation than "spoilery". Oh well we shall see when the game comes out to know for sure. It's just a minor mechanic so I can wait .
