You know, the parallels we have been having between Solas and Mordin (wondering not only about similar traits, and the fact they were written by the same person), and then applying them to what may or may not be Solas' backstory, has me liking a few of the ideas being tossed around this thread. Like Paragon Punk, I am a fan of "KISS" (Keep It Simple Stupid), more often than not. That isn't to say, I haven't enjoyed more overtly dramatic characters. But what a nice change of pace to potentially have something slightly more relatable, in terms of everyday trials/tribulations and good/bad luck (like what many will experience in life).
Some ME3 spoilers, so I figured I would put this next part under tags.
Spoiler
Solas could definitely have ideology conflicts, in a manner that "can" conflict Mordin regarding the Genophage. What I do hope for, is that like the Genophage arc (and subsequently Mordin's involvement), it comes as choices and agency. I have played both with the Tuchanka Arc, curing the genophage/Mordin sacrificing himself, and not curing and faking Mordin's death/helping out the Crucible project. (BTW, as much as I like Wrex and Bakara, I really liked having these options available, and it should be noted, there was nothing jackass-like about the Shepard I played, who sabotaged the Genophage - most notably because Wreav was in power, and poor Bakara didn't survive.) If his opinions on the Fade do come into question, and take us through a series of events that may have a direct effect on Solas, I hope that we have some branching opportunities. And would be nice if they weren't glaringly good or bad.
I like the idea of his thoughts on the fade, coming into question. Whether he changes his mind about something, and considering how "open-minded" he is, that might just happen. Regardless, really looking forward to his traits and opinions being revealed in the game.
I notice similarities between Mordin and Solas also but as much as I love Mordin, I hope Solas is decently different. I can imagine how they could bleed into each other, considering both have the same writer, but I'll be happier if they have less similarities than it seems they do at the moment.

I agree with this, and truth be told, the little snippets we have gotten, have me thinking he has some similarities with Thane's personality (not background!!). If we are looking at characters to compare with. BUT, I suspect he will be his own character, by all rights. Until we have the game, to delve further into his character though, using other known BW characters is fun and makes some sense.....for the speculation bit, that is.
Just read the Cullen interview and it is really heartening for folk not into the Tranquil answer! I'm looking forward to re-meeting him and seeing how things play out through the game. I am hoping that from what I read there and the fan snippet DG called out on his tumblr that he will play nice with Solas and Cole. That would be nice. I am hoping that I don't have to deal with any of our advisors being horrible to our chosen crew. (Unless we secretly have choice on our advisors and thus things can be shifted to have a cohesive team. But I don't see that as likely.)
Cullen seems to be very interesting. I'm looking forward for meeting him in a game. I think he looks quite mature now and I like it.
After reading the interview about Solas I get the feeling that he is like a yoga teacher who is calm and tries to remind everyone to be open-minded and tolerant towards each other. But on the other hand I get the feeling that he is like hippie who loves everyone. But he also seems to be like a professor who enjoys academic debates.

Ha, it's like someone at BioWare has been reading my posts and trying to ease my hesitation about the character! No, but seriously, this is exactly right. Between this interview and the fan snippet DG commented on, I'm much more interested in getting to know the character. It seems like this game might have the most interesting mage playthrough of the series so far!
On that note, I'm hoping I will be able to spec Solas as a healer, because I like making things go boom.
I've always been a fan of Cullen, but after DA2 my interested in him waned quite a bit due to his "mages aren't people" rant and actually considering the Tranquil Solution. But it seems like he's matured and learned a lot from the events at the end of DA2. So I am hopeful that I will be able to get along with him in Inquisition. Still, Solas remains my favorite. Cullen could have had that coveted position, but alas, he lost my favor for a while for being a meanie. lol.

Your comment reminded me of this song, haven't listen to it for ages XD [the song was "boom boom boom boom" by vengaboys, but I can't post the link because there is a "funny" preview image]
Yes Cullen looks more mature and certainly changed after the events of DA2. I really liked the interview, we'll have the chance to get to know him better and possibly find out how he really feels about mages now. He might have changed his idea of what is wrong or what is right
I wonder if what Solas does is actually what the ancient elves did. That is, he is not ancient himself, but that the ancient elves did not really live elongated lives in this world, but had access to all the knowledge that came before via the sleeping thing and that the practice was lost and then time confused the details.
I like that idea. Also, maybe their life expectancy did diminish due to all the hardship endured and became mixed up with the stories of ancient memories.
Regarding the circumstances that led him to leave the villiage, it seems likely to me that he could have always kept to himself to keep from being discovered as a mage and left when he was old enough so he would be able to practice magic more easily. The PW interview gave me the impression that he might not be deeply invested in the conflict between elves and humans or Templars and Mages. This might suggest his leaving his village was not the result of any tragedy relating to those issues but just the product of his growing up.

He may be open-minded, and I don't think he's necessarily pro-mage over pro-templar, but given his way of life I wouldn't be surprised if he were pro-mage-freedom, as opposed to being simply pro-mage or anti-templar. Templars do have a purpose: hunting down and destroying dangerous blood mages. But they are overstepping their boundaries. And mages should have the right to live as normal people, as long as they don't go around burning villages or sacrificing villagers (or both).

Oh yes, I agree that he's going to be pro-mage freedom. I'm just think it may be something that he believes because locking people away is wrong, but he's not going to be as personally invested in it as Anders was (pre DA2) as he's not been such a victim to it.
Crap, NO wait, it was Sheryl, I think...well, they were in a discussion about the various ways they cause tears... Crap. CRAAAAAAPPPPPP....
That reminds me. Ages ago when we were trying to figure out if Weekes wrote Bull I bookmarked some tweets. Now we know he wrote Solas, it may be relevant.

Have settled on soundtrack to "Once" for this character. If anybody has other suggestions for sadness, regret, and feels, just holler.
The comment thread (including replies from other writers) is here. The soundtrack for "Once" is here. "Falling Slowly" was fairly popular around the time it came out.
Don't quote me on it, but I'm fairly certain it was said that this time around there won't actually be a straight up healing spec.
Oh, that's interesting. I'll admit, I'm not that big a fan of micro-managing my party. I'm cool with hard fights being hard and needing my attention more, and I really loved the environmental aspects shown in the demos (like taking out the bridge of archers), but for regular fodder fights, I'd rather be blowing things up. I suspect there will be a way to set up my party so that I don't have to worry about people dying on me if I'm not obsessively watching the HP bars. I would prefer another party member take care of that so I can focus on dealing damage.
Solas doesn't like the Qun because he's against things that limit freedom, so I am really doubtful he's sympathetic towards the templars at all.
I'm not sure if you're referring to my comment... I don't think he would be either, I do think that he may not share the same bitterness towards templars as that of a mage who was taken from their family as a child and imprisoned by them. But I also expect he would be against templars and everything they stand for on principal.

Well, as for the Anders comparison before, I doubt anyone will be as bitter about anything in this game as Anders was towards templars. lol
I imagine it wont be a laser focus for Solas, like elven issues aren't a focus for him. I think he likely just supports all forms of freedom.

Unless of course, he was traumatized by the fact that his family and friends were harassed or even killed by the templars trying to save him from the circle and thus leading to a life time of solitude to prevent those he cares about from every being hurt again....
Or he could have just left quietly in the cover of darkness at the first sign of magic and avoided all the drama.
I'm am positive that he will have a story to tell. What kind? We'll find out October 7th.

First off, this needs to be posted:
I have the feeling that Solas is indifferent about the whole Templar-Mage thing. They've never gotten him before and they never will because he prefers ruins that are in the middle of nowhere.
Just want to pop in and say I've been staring at Solas' screen shots and he is sooooooo sexy. I really can't wait for this game and pray to the maker he is an LI.
