I think it was a combination of budget and his character. I've heard some complaints that the female elf romance animations with Cullen are sometimes a bit weird because of the height difference between human and elf females in the game. There's a pretty big gap between M/F elves as well IIRC. But...they made IB's romance work despite height differences. They probably could have done the same with Solas if they had really wanted to. So there could be a reason he only likes women related to story we haven't encountered yet (such as a pregnancy plot. Maybe we're gonna play pass-the-OldGodSoul I hope not), to character background that was left out (ancient elves were almost always straight - they did seem to be similar to Tevinter), or it could simply be that he was never conceptualized as bisexual. We'll probably never know why exactly.
I constantly have to remind myself that they've broken up and that he didn't just disappear. It's extra difficult because I know why he did (or at least, more of why), and Lavellan has no idea. Depending on the dialog choices in scene three can really change how it comes off too. Sad puppy gets "vhenan" and "in another world", Sad/Angry gets "Tell me you don't care/I can't" -- both of those scream "I still have feelings for you but I'm doing this for other reasons!!" But the "banal vhenan" option is much more final -- he's very distant when he walks away. Then either way you get this banter and it's clear as day that he didn't break up with her because of something she did: "She thinks it's because of her" implies that Cole knows that it's got nothing to do with her, and "You cannot heal this, Cole" implies he's not over the whole thing (though whether that is in reference to the current situation or the past I can't really decide).

I often wonder whether they held back on it because they weren't sure how people would react to it, whether they would like the character etc. The fact that he's the BSN favourite romance fills me with hope actually, more than that he's one of the favourite companions, perhaps they were waiting to see how he'd be received, I mean, they knew his story wouldn't be over...

I think if there was a pregnancy plot associated with the romance, it would have to be canon that Solas and Lavellan slept together. Since it's up to the player, we can probably take that off the table with some certainty.
The whole having to flirt every time and kiss him fairly early in the relationship bothered me some. I think in the context of how little content he gets, it kind of makes sense that it had to be that way. I don't think his response was out of character though, given the way he kisses her every time he kisses her and how quickly he says, "I love you." He's really, really passionate under all that politeness and I would say he's also desperately lonely.
On this new playthrough, I'm trying to space out the time between the first Fade kiss and his second kiss scene, taking them out traveling together as much as possible (without advancing the main plot too much). That way it feels like they sort of put the kiss on the back burner, are spending time getting to know each other as friends, and then Solas had his "final push" to go for it and confess his love because he couldn't hold it back anymore after she helped with his spirit friend. I think it works out quite nicely roleplaying-wise

I was so confused!!! (I have never been dumped either. Or maybe I was dumped like, once, but I forgot about it because whoever it was wasn't very important anyway). I was gasping and squealing at my computer. I said aloud "Did I just get dumped?" And my boyfriend was like "What are you talking about, no?" and I was like "SOLAS JUST BROKE UP WITH ME!?!?! Wait no, that didn't just happen." and I went to go talk to him again and He was formal and distant and I was like "WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPENED?" So, I dunno.
I think we got dumped, girl.
Okay, it's good to know I wasn't alone in that. He just finished trying to explain how much, how deeply he cares and then walks away. Lavellan looked the saddest ever and I was still playing catch up to figure out what happened. And then to unlock that achievement at the same time. Ugh
In DAII it seemed much more clear that Fenris was backing out cold turkey and doing the dumping. ..actually in retrospect, he even said the same thing "I can't". So, I don't know. Just, Solas! Damn you!

I mentioned once before that it was interesting that they introduced a character so focused on the past in the same game as time travel magic. They may have nothing to do with each other but it's certainly something to think about.
Although I'm not sure if they had him change the world that drastically they could just have him pop and go, "so... forgive me?"

its like they were suppose to have a bunch of earlier scenes together before that one which would have allowed them to bond. Personally I just push it around in my head so that first scene happens a while after the cole story arc because at least it gives him a bit more to go off of.

I think Solas is INTP rather than INTJ because I think his dominant function is Ti rather than Ni.
This made me legit lol, because I refuse to do any of my story missions or talk to my LI when my husband is present, because I would never hear the end of it. He caught me crying once over a video game and our relationship has never been the same lol.
Much easier if I can be alone during my emotional gaming so that I can fully commit to it without Adam trying to have ME committed. Lol.
Lol, my husband knows about my shame and he's surprisingly tolerant. I try to imagine how I would feel if he was oggling a female game character, I'd probably be super jealous . I usually like to be alone anyway, just because I feel almost guilty when I realize I can love a game character so much. But I've always been that way, I love to read fantasy and have always gotten too emotionally bonded to the characters. In a way it's fun, and in other ways it kind of sucks (because I got dumped!)

I don't think people *really* think it's pajamas--it's just a way to deride it, because that outfit is seriously bad (and does sort-of look like PJs). I happen to agree that I think she looks ridiculous when other people are in nice formal attire or battle gear and she's in this awful beige jumpsuit. Just ugh.
